All credit to the Disney studios because they tell the story of the Hunchback of Notre Dame in just 26 pages, complete with their own illustrations, and they miss nothing of importance in the tale.
Quasimodo lived high above Paris in the great cathedral of Notre Dame, hidden from the world because his keeper Judge Frollo told him that he would be rejected by everyone because of his ugliness.
But once he had swung down into the city to join in 'The Festival of Fools' his adventures began. He met a beautiful gypsy girl called Esmeralda who, at first not realising that he was not wearing a mask, chose him as the King of Fools. This led to antagonism with Frollo and his captain of guards, Phoebus, who had fallen in love with Esmeralda.
Quaimodo was captured and tied up, Esmeralda was imprisoned and Phoebus fell out with Frollo. But Quasimodo turned out to be the hero when he freed Esmeralda, saved Phoebus from a fate worse than death and battled with Frollo, who fell to his death. As such it was 'Three cheers for Quasimodo' from the crowds and he was carried through the streets as the new hero of Paris.
There is plenty more action and romance in this retelling of Victor Hugo story and it is another excellent Ladybird production.
