Written by a groundbreaking figure of modern medical study, Tracking Medicine is an eye-opening introduction to the science of health care delivery, as well as a powerful argument for its relevance in shaping the future of our country. An indispensable resource for those involved in public health and health policy, this book uses Dr. Wennberg's pioneering research to provide a framework for understanding the health care crisis; and outlines a roadmap for real change in the future. It is also a useful tool for anyone interested in understanding and forming their own opinion on the current debate.
A necessary read to understanding healthcare delivery, chalk full of numbers, the data speaks volumes. This will shape your view for the future of health systems.
A very smart person was shocked I hadn't read this so of course I had to immediately move it to the top of the list (I have a policy of reading all books smart people recommend). a lot of this information was frankly shocking. there is a scientific aura around medical practice that is often undeserved. wennberg outlines his decades of research that have a few basic messages: more medical care is not necessarily better, patients often delegate decisions to doctors who don't accurately choose treatments that match their patients preferences, there is enormous overuse of medical care, and supply sensitive care like hospitalization is closely correlated with capacity. many more things to say about this, but a great overview of the field of healthcare epidemiology.
