The langauge is really easy, sometimes I was like "are they kidding me". What's also a bit annoying that they omitted several important books. But it's useful if you need to have basic knowledge about British literature.
This books saved me for the preparation of the module of survey on English Literature at university. It is the summury of all the periods from old English until contemporary literature. And it gave me an idea of important books to read, so I highly recomend it especially for beginners.
To me, this book is much more interesting than the book about American literature I just read. However, it may just because I am more fond of literature of England than that of America. Besides, difficult vocabularies are explained in footnotes, which are very helpful. English learners will surely appreciate it. Overall, the book is a great introduction to the world of English literature.
It was definitely one of the best books about English literature. It summarizes the subject, but I would recommend it only for beginners. In case you need more information, it may not be enough. I read it during college, but I still read it when I need to prepare my literature lessons.
"An outline of English literature," is a nice read and before you read this literature, just read the outline first so that you'll know what will happen and what will be the exciting part of the story. Well, this was based of what I understood of it. From the beginning to the end-its enjoyable and fun to read even you are a kid and at the same time it has a lot of lessons that you will learn in the story.
In the first part of the story, you will be amazed because if you check the English literature book you will see the full details of the chapter, at the same time in the outline you will see only the main topic of the story and the explanation as well.
My opinion on reading this, is that you need to understand and read peacefully for you to know what is the main point of the writer. To know the story and to search the meaning of it, you have to have an understanding of many incomprehensible words. Also, I love this book so far, if you are bored have a time to read it and you will amaze on it
I got this mainly to get recommendations, and I got that sure. But I found the way this book is written very funny lol. I mean it's clearly for kids in school and all but I laughed everytime they said things like 'he also wrote a couple other things but they weren't good so it doesn't matter'. It was also weird how they dedicated so little to some authors (and also the lack of women). But anyways, got some good recs, thanks m8.
Actually this book is the main source text in my History of English Literature class. Because it was produced in 1984 so it was written in the old-school style of language. Nevertheless, I think this book will never be out-of-date as I - who just started to read it this year - can pretty much enjoy it, and it will always be a required reading for English Literature students/enthusiasts.
I enjoyed this outline indeed. But just ask how Agatha Christie's Production can be summarized in 3 lines?! How "TO kill a Mockingbird" and "The Crucible" can be ignored?! Also the literary movement need some more details. But to be Fair; we cannot complain from the vocab level cus it is clear from the intro that is "to help the foreign student" .
The Thing is, this book doesn't deepen your knowledge- it just broadens it. Also, the language used and the content explained are hilariously incongruous! Seriously, what's up with that?
