Self Healing Colitis & Crohn's

Rate this book
This is a new paperback edition of the world's #1 self healing guide book for IBD and IBS health recovery. It explains that IBD is caused by toxic diets and lifestyle stress, and that the body requires a clean-digesting nutritious diet, rest and extra sleep in order to self-heal. This is not a plan for managing IBD and IBS, nor is this a quick-fix gimmick. Rather, this approach removes the causes of disease and promotes lasting health for everyone without medicine by supplying our biological health needs. It is based upon the venerable Natural Hygiene Self-healing System which has led million of people to lasting health. This powerful book covers diet, lifestyle and psychology, presenting the Vegan Diet Healing Plan with correct food combining. This is the only dietary approach which results in a clean bowel, while providing superior nutrition and liberating our full healing powers, for rapid healing and complete rejuvenation. The detailed easy-to-follow plan has proven to be effective in over 1,000 cases. This book was written by a health counselor who himself used the plan to heal advanced ulcerative colitis in 1984 and has since enjoyed excellent health, counseling many IBD sufferers to health via his Colitis & Crohn's Health Recovery Services counseling business which he founded in 1993. Healthful lifestyle guidelines as well as 11 pages of testimonials, five medical endorsements and other inspirational tools are included.

As some reviewers have stated, the views presented in David Klein's Self Healing Colitis & Crohn's are extreme; but extreme circumstances call for extreme measures.

I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis in 2004. After the doctor told me I would have to take medication everyday for the rest of my life I began searching for a natural alternative. I found David Klein's Self-Healing Ulcerative Colitis & Crohn's in 2006 and have found the guidance within to be helpful. When I am following the guidelines within I am symptom-free without drugs.

The author, David Klein, is very thorough in his approach to teaching the reader about our colon, why we get sick, and how to heal ourselves. He takes a no-nonsense, matter-of-fact approach that assumes everyone suffering from ulcerative colitis or crohn's will, at this knowledge, lay off that which makes us sick and fully embrace health.

The biggest problem with David is that he is right. Eating a 100% vegan diet, following food combining practices, and eating a diet consisting of at least 75% raw fruits WILL result in a healthy colon. I am never healthier than when I am following his Natural Hygiene Self-Healing System. The problem is, unless one has a supportive group of family and friends, it is almost impossible to follow 100%. I usually can maintain health following his Vegan Diet Healing Plan for breakfast, lunch, and all snacks, while for dinner, preparing the cooked vegan food my family and friends expect; but I am also fortunate enough to be a stay-at-home mother. I cannot imagine following this diet while having to work a normal job.

Though this is true, there is no book I recommend more to people suffering from Ulcerative Colitis or Crohn's. When the cooked food becomes too much, the only way I can stop a flare-up is by returning to David's guidelines.

Another helpful book is "Crazy Sexy Diet" by Kris Carr. Kris's diet is easier to follow because it allows more normalcy. She seems to understand that not everyone has the mental fortitude -- or desire -- to go completely counter-culture; however, I am more likely to have a flare-up on Kris's diet. While following David Klein's guidelines I am always symptom-free and full of vitality. As such, if I allow myself the freedom of Kris's diet, I always return to David's to fix what's broken when it breaks. Between these two books I find a healthy balance that allows me to have family and friends who do not ascribe to my dietary practices while maintaining health.

This book is a tough pill to swallow…and a magic pill would be easier. Klein’s plan is for people who are desperate for digestive relief and facing surgery and really debilitating diagnoses. He does not mess around. His plan is extreme but extreme medical situations do call for sometimes an extremely different approach. I only started phase one this week, the healing phase, and have been following his recommendations for people in active disease process aka hospital level digestive distress, ulcers, internal bleeding, scarring etc…so I have been eating only easily digestible fruit and water and green juice and that’s it - but hey, it’s staying down and I need to turn this health ship around. He has helped thousands of patients so I am hopeful it can work for me too.

This book reads like a zillion medical journal articles made into a paperback book. Very dry and direct but informative.

It's a bit over-the-top effusive, but has some nice principles.

Lots of good info. Pretty extreme diet (vegan, mostly fruit, 90% raw) that sounds difficult to maintain, but the reasoning and testimonies are pretty convincing. I'll definitely be implementing as much of this as I can while keeping a lifestyle sustainable for me - and will see what results I get with my severe ulcerative colitis. My goal is to be able to be med-free as soon as possible, and this method may be my best bet.

Kindle Version Unreadable

Please re-edit the Kindle Version. It is unreadable and I was obliged to stop reading the book. Hence, my 3-star rating. I think the content of this book might be very good, but due to bad formatting I cannot assess!

Lots of food for though here. Some of it is a bit confusing (he recommends avoiding citrus, then has oranges on the list of things to eat, for example). But overall it's an interesting and makes you think.

Not a science based book and does not include citations. Has some interesting ideas to note but not well organized or evidence-based. Written in a very preachy style.

If I were to judge this book by the 1st and last quarters - it would easily be 5 starts because I totally agree that regaining any kind of self healing from any disease is an approach consisting of many disciplines beyond just diet - such as environment, lifestyle, emotional state, rest, sleep and much more...

But the diet itself (although good) is painted seemingly as the be all and end all - a vegan diet - and a very strict and restrictive vegan diet at that. Yet many others will also swear by other diets to effectively heal IBD too such as SCD, GAPS, Paleo, Keto and more which totally contradicts this authors claims that any animal food or fat is absolutely bad as found with other diets.

I think that’s excessive and the key lies in the first and last quarters of this book which discuss modalities beyond diet as mentioned earlier - providing they are given the respect and discipline they require too along with diet - then any good diet for IBD can work and and you need not to limit yourself this bad - but absolutely this authors diet can be great to heal fast and enter remission the quickest way possible - but it was crazy that even a nutritious and healing food like avocado is not recommended until symptoms clear whereas I believe it can be one of the important nutritious and calorie providing foods in steps to healing in the first place - things like that and other attacks on things like Himalayan Sea Salt - even good fats of animals like fish oils which are proven to be great for us made me disagree with a lot of the authors claims to when it comes to diet itself

Bottom line the diet is great for fast remission and healing - but not necessarily or recommended long term as a must like this author claims for vibrant health ...

I'm part way through reading this and I have to say the first 20% of the book is just re-iteration of the same idea that we have to listen to our bodies and that the body has a natural way to heal itself and adding drugs/medications just complicates things. I feel so far that this has been unnecessarily repeated. Really hoping that to gain some insight and facts as I get further into this book. Will post an updated review once complete!
