Herbert Spencer Zim (July 12, 1909 – December 5, 1994) was a naturalist, author, editor and educator best known as the founder (1945) and editor-in-chief of the Golden Guides series of nature books.
A wonderful book with quite amazing illustrations. The illustrations are really what makes the book. They are very appropriate for the age group that the book is for and the subjects exhibit distinct personalities. The writing is definitely of the time period that it is written. It does maintain a positive note as well. However, one can't read it without a a sense bit of sadness.
This book is so awesome and I'm so glad I found it at the thrift store. The illustrations are just wonderful -- black-and-white, but all made up of brush strokes. THe book made me sad as it details how elephants were captured and stolen from their group. But it was also fascinating and just ridiculously wonderful to read.
