İş Kültür yayınlarının bu serisini büyük bir merakla takip ediyorum. Fakat kalitesi, çevirisi, baskısı ile değerinin bilinmediğini düşünüyorum. Eşsiz biyografik eserler olduklarını düşünüyorum ve bu çalışmaların gerek dönemin tarihini, gerek sanat tarihini gerekse sanat akımlarını öğrenmek açılarından çok mühim olduğunu düşünüyorum.

Monet, izlenimcili akımının öncülerinden olarak görülen bir sanatçı. Turner ve Cezanne eserlerini anımsatan manzara resimleri ile bilinen ressam, ilk zamanlarında çok eleştiri almış ve zorluklar yaşamış. Bu kitapta hayatının ilk dönemlerinden, son zamanlarına kadar olan yaşamını okuyoruz. Aynı zamanda yaşadığı dönemde ilişki halinda olduğu sanatçıları da öğreniyoruz.

Kitabın diğer yarısında ise eserlerini bir galeri tadında inceliyoruz. Bu kısımda her eser ile ilgili bir bilgilendirme yazısı mevcut. İlk dönemleri, izlenimcilik zamanları ve son eserleri olarak bölümler halinde inceleme olanağı buluyoruz.

Eserlerinde beni en çok etkileyen portreleri oldu. Evet, fazla portre çalışması olmayan bir ressam. Ama nedense alanı olan manzaralardansa beni esas etkileyen bu eserleri oldu. Ayrıca sınıflandırılamayan “Öğle Yemeği - 1868” eseri ve “La Painte de laHeve - 1864” gibi eserleri bende uzun uzun bakma hissiyatı uyandırdı.

Kitapla ilgili yazılacak çok fazla detay var. Ama bunları yazmak yerine okunduktan sonra üzerinde konuşulası detaylar olduğunu düşünüyorum.

I am obsessed with Monet right now and this book was a combination of biography and painting analysis. I liked that it substantiated what I have already learned about Monet and yet added a different perspective. So far I have read two books in succession about Monet and not once did I get a gossipy or dirt revealing look into his life, thank goodness! While reading this book, I did wonder what if Monet had painted in watercolor, what would have been his approach, what would his watercolor paintings look like?

Magnificient! I can just imagine the thrill of having a chat with the artists meeting in Guerbois cafe- Renoir, Monet, Sisley, Rodin, Manet, talking about their work, admission to the Salon, wonders of mid 19th century Paris...Monet remains my favourite painter, not only because of his ever improved, full of light and vibrant brushstrokes, but also for his stubborness in searching perfection and rendering the magic of light.

500 images of Monet's work is a lot to look at!

This book is chock full of photos of Monet's art. Pieced among copious images of his work, the first part of this book briefly describes his upbringing & early interest in art, his journey & development to become a painter and an impressionist painter at that. Monet's family members are woven into the biography section of the book along with photos of paintings where they are the subjects, although usually the landscape gets top billing. The biography continues to his final years where he is still producing an amazing amount of art even as his eyes are failing.

I learned about Monet's amazing discipline and love of painting en plein air in even bitter cold and windy weather. He loved being outdoors and especially by a body of water or a garden. His passion was indeed trying to capture the effects of light on his subject. Impressive in output and in his experiments with painting the same scenes at different times of the day.

Really solid and concise Monet biography. About two pages worth of light biography, historical context, and painting photos per year, so it's really easy to go to a specific part of his life if you desire. Extra little analysis in second section that doesn't really add too much but is still fun to flip through. Really good choice if you want a real biography and not just an overview that you could still read in an afternoon.
