Paramedic buff to burnt shows the changes of a highly decorated New York City paramedic from being a rookie to now an old timer with over 15 years on the streets. It covers some of the more interesting calls he has done over these many years.
For me this book felt like a good yarn around the camp fire – George Steffenson’s stories about his work as a paramedic are engaging, told with insight and humour and reflect the love for his job, his knowledge and experience. There is enough procedural information in the stories to be able to hold the interest of readers who work in the industry, but not too much, so that other readers can also enjoy the book without needing too much medical knowledge – all in all I thought that the author found a good balance, as I have read several similar books where this was not achieved. I also loved the way the author compares his earlier memories of the job to his experienced self – being relatively new to the health industry myself I could really relate to his “buff” segments, and it made me laugh.
All in all, I really enjoyed reading this book, and it kept my interest to the very last page – I would love to hear more stories from this author, as I’m sure he has many more to tell. My only disappointment was in the editing of my copy, which contained a lot of spelling and grammatical errors – but it certainly did not spoil my enjoyment of the content. 3.5 stars.
George Steffensen's book "Paramedic Buff to Burnt" is the real deal. George tells it like it is. If you want to know what it's like to be a Paramedic, read this book. I worked in EMS for years and I enjoyed reading all of his stories. They are well written, true, and nothing is held back. Few medics have as much experience as George Steffensen. A great read, whether you work in medicine or not. Everyone can learn something from this book. I will now be reading his second book!
If you are in EMS, you will enjoy reading the account of all the calls and the musings of the author. If you are not, hopefully, you will be entertained by the stories. You also will get to see a few days in the life of... a NYC paramedic and appreciate what EMS staff does,on a daily basis.
