The Hunt

Rate this book
No matter how they try to flee, the virgins who enter the twisting tunnels of the Guardians are destined to be caught. Actually, most don’t try too hard. The stories of warriors who can take on Cat form, of lovers who can make a woman scream with pleasure, are just too enticing.

But Miu is no virgin, and she’s joined the Hunt with her own agenda. After she steals the moonstone necklace she’s been sent for, she has no intention of becoming some Cat’s tasty morsel. Too late she discovers these kitties have some deliciously kinky habits, and the dark hunter on her trail isn’t about to let impudent thievery go without punishment of the most exquisite kind.

Miu is on a dangerous mission to steal a precious necklace that is hidden somewhere in the temple of Amun Ra. The temple is overrun with Guardian warriors who can turn into feral cats at a moment’s notice. Miu is so daring because she is a thief who is under control of Lierr who holds Miu’s sister captive. Miu has a week to bring the necklace to Lierr or he will make her sister suffer. Miu is going to have a very difficult time because the only way for her to enter the temple is to participate in the bride hunt. For the hunt, virgin females are given a dowry and are hunted by the Guardians, and if caught they will be their mates. Miu is no virgin, but she’s good at pretending to be something she’s not. She thinks if she pretends to be a hapless virgin, she will have an easier time in locating the necklace.

Because Miu is too cocky for her own good, she catches the eye of Amun Ra who rules over the temple and the Guardians. He thinks Miu is up to no good and orders Jafar, a much skilled Guardian, to keep an eye on her. Jafar isn’t too thrilled with the babysitting job. But as he stalks her in the shadows, his inner cat calls out for Miu, as it would if it spotted his mate. Jafar doesn’t want Miu as his mate, even though he protects and helps her get out of scrapes as she roams the dangerous winding tunnels.

Miu mistakenly thinks Jafar is another thief Lierr sent in case she wasn’t successful. She offers a compromise and Jafar goes along with her. But then Miu finds the necklace and if caught, her crime is punishable by death. Jafar has fallen hard for Miu and the only way he can keep her safe and alive is to make her his mate and bond with her for all eternity.

The Hunt takes place in an alternative universe that is very reminiscent of Dara Joy’s past romances. The men here are very alpha and sex-driven and the women, such as Miu, are no-nonsense and prickly. I let out a few chuckles because Miu really does keep Jafar on his toes and annoys him so much that he doesn’t know what to do with her because she is always outwitting him. These two are very strong-willed but also stubborn. Because of that they get into more problems than they could have ever imagined. Watching Miu try to talk her way out of things was one of the reasons to keep reading.

The lust Miu and Jafar act upon wasn’t as heated as I thought it would be. The buildup between them has its moments, but when they finally quench their desire for one another, I found it to be a bit flat. There are more than a few sex scenes here but they just didn’t excite. I was more interested in how Miu was going to rescue her sister and the banter she shares back and forth with Jafar.

Anne Marsh has some nice world building in The Hunt, but at times I couldn’t figure out if she was trying for a dark, angsty read or a more lighthearted one. For a freshman novel I would say the author has done an acceptable job. I would be interested in seeing possible future books that take place in this world Ms. Marsh has created. I think Ms. Marsh has some great potential as a paranormal romance author who can build up a fan base.

The Hunt has some fun moments with a hero and heroine who make a great team, even though they drive each other crazy.

Okay, this book is what would happen if Sherrilyn Kenyon watched Stargate, and used some were-cats as her men as if they were Alexi Morgan's Paladins. But minus the world building. As a first book for author Anne Marsh, I guess it's okay, but there was absolutely, positively, zero world building. But hey, that's okay, because if you've seen Stargate, there you go!
Okay, it takes place in a fantasy world, but is heavy with Egyptian overtones. (I thought, is this Egypt? is this another planet? Is this the future, wait they have swords and horses...ancient Egypt?)
A theif named Miu is posing as one of the virgins of the Hunt to gain entrance into the temple, but on her way in, intrigues one of the Guardians, and offends the Amun Ra. The Amun Ra is (stargate rip off here) an alien being who is extra super powerful and who re-animates dead/dying warriors with his Cats. So Miu is sent on her way, but is trying to avoid being mated by one of the Guardians chasing the virgins. Jafar, however, is told by Ra to follow her to see what she's about. He does. They fall into lust and it becomes a male/female dominance thing. The only part I actually did NOT like was she was punished by an orgasmic spanking and fingering in front of all of the Guardians. It was humiliating to read. It really made me mad that as strong as she was, she let that slide, and that it was even in there at all! But other than that, Jafar saves her thieving hide by mating and belling her (she wears his bells) and then they try to save her sister from a bad guy. The bad guy is an ifrik (an alien, and the Guardians' sworn enemy) who likes to come to their world and steal women. -It was Paladins similarity time, guardian the doorways to the Others and keeping them in their world.-
Overall, I would say it was a quick read, that had a TON of potential, but got to be confusing due to lack of info from the author. From big things like the world building...where the heck were they?! To little things like his hand is down her leather pants, oh but in the next sentence she "spreads herself open for him"...with pants on? How did that happen? There is so much potential to this series that i will probably read her next one, and let that one be the decider for me on Ms. Anne Marsh. 2 1/2 stars

I really enjoyed this one, from Miu one of those ball-busting mates who don't wilt under her alpha male's commands to the world of A.R. and his posse of fighting kitties *g*. The smexy scenes were okay, nothing like the more explicit ones you read now a days but still pretty hot. The belling concept was an interesting new twist to the whole mate-shifter theme. This might bother some . I want to read stories about the other guardians, like Hebon , has that very tragic story that you know he'll have to have a HEA.

I wasn't that interested in the pseudo-Egyptian world from the outset, but decided to buy this book because of the cat shifters. I remained not keen on the world, but was determined to finish this, despite the fact that it also felt as if the author couldn't decide on a language for her world - can you really call darkness 'Stygian' in a world without Greco-Roman mythology and the Styx? Despite this, I kept going until the sex scene in which the hero's idea of sex talk turned out to be describing how the other guardians would gang rape the heroine before executing her for thievery. Of course, she might enjoy it, but they wouldn't really care. Then I gave up.

I like the premise of the book. Virgins have to run the catacombs while the Guardians hunt them for a mate. The Guardians are cat shifters and of course are hot. There is a lot of explicit sex in The Hunt. I really like the heroine. She's fiesty and determined. This books could easily be the first in a series.

Not a bad book at all, it held my interest and it was a fresh tale of shapeshifters. A little more erotic that I was expecting but I have no complaints about that. I look forward to reading more by Anne Marsh

This was an erotic fast read. Full of mystical folklore sexy cat people and a god who knows more then he lets on all the time. A spunky thief and a sexy cat shifter who knows what he wants when he sees it. For a sexy light read on the shifter side this is a good steamy book. I enjoyed it.

My Review:

The Plot:

The Guardians: mythical Werecats that guard an ancient temple high above the Valley. In exchange for their protection from a dark evil, the inhabitants of the Valley send their virgin daughters to the Guardians to participate in the annual Hunt. There the females scamper like white mice through the temple's dark catacombs awaiting the pounce of a Cat and the opportunity to slake their primal lust. Some of the women will stay and become mates while others will surface with an accompanying dowry. But some, sadly, will perish in the temple's dark depths for it's said that a great many of treasures lie deep below and any thief caught poaching will never again greet the surface. Miu is one such thief but with a desperate motive of life or death rather than mere greed.

Deliver the necklace or Lore dies. Period. Not an idle threat, Miu is more than desperate to do as told by the Master since her sister's life most definitely hangs in balance. Utilizing her moon daemon half as well as being armed with a map of the temple's catacombs, Miu runs in the Hunt with every intention of not getting caught by some randy Cat. She's here to pull a job and while circumstances conjure sexual thoughts, she'll just have to combat her suddenly raging hormones. That is until a particularly handsome mercenary decides she needs a bodyguard with extra benefits.

A Guardian on a mission, Jafar is sent by the temple's leader Amun Ra to discover what this particular little female is up to since it's obvious that she's not typical of the sort that participates in the Hunt. Sure enough, Jafar's little Miu leads him on a merry chase through the catacombs guided shockingly by a map thus igniting all sorts of dangerous questions. Who was able to create such a map of the heavily guarded temple? What is Miu searching for? And the most important question of all: why does Miu stir up a raging primal possession within his Cat? Seizing the opportunity to try and gain Miu's trust to procure the answers he seeks, Jafar doesn't correct her mistaken assumption that he's not a Guardian because he lacks the facial tattoos that claim his race.

When the Cat's out of the bag (pun intended) Miu feels betrayed but accepting of the fact that Jafar lied about being a Guardian. It's expected that all men lie and Jafar merely proved himself to be no exception. It's no surprise then to Miu either when Jafar bargains with her that in exchange for being his "docile" mate, he'll help her escape the temple and the Guardians with the necklace she seeks as well as save her sister. More than desperate, Miu resigns to her fate and accepts the bargain all the while telling herself that the deep seeded desire she feels for Jafar has no bearing whatsoever on her decision. Uh yeah, keeping telling yourself that sister! *wink* But truly, Jafar has a lot to make up for in Miu's eyes and he spends the rest of novel defying and destroying all of Miu's beliefs where males are concerned when finally, while gripping a dead body and suspended over a dark tube leading inevitably towards death, Miu accepts that she loves her Cat. But can that love save Jafar? The Guardians are after him for his betrayal. He chose Miu over them then proceeded to sully that betrayal even more when he stole their necklace. All of which he'll be mortally punished for if Miu doesn't come up with a plan quick, one that might miraculously save them both and grant them a much deserved Happily Ever After.

The Heroine:

A consistent character, Miu's bravery, stubbornness, and vital sarcasm never weavers from beginning to end. Instead her character growth boils down to trust. Bred on survival, the only being she trusts is herself. But when faced with Jafar, Miu is thrown through a loop. Her instincts war within her and while Jafar proves his loyalty time and again, Miu's heart demands the ultimate sacrifice. Interestingly enough, it comes down to Miu making that sacrifice. Not unlike the fact that no one has ever done anything for Miu without their own personal gain, Miu herself has operated under that same thought until Jafar. For the first time in her life she sacrifices herself for another, so that he - Jafar - can live.

The Hero:

Jafar is a gentleman through and through. Sure he's got some skeletons in the closet and yes he's killed countless times, all in the name of protection and the destruction of evil of course, but in essence, Jafar's just a good guy with a good heart.

While he's had some bad luck with the fairer sex, it doesn't hold him back from wanting to protect Miu. She immediately tugs at his heart strings and he's soon wrapped around her finger. Brave, courageous and determined, he never gives up on winning Miu's trust even though she makes him work damn hard for it. Any man willing to turn his back on his leader and his brothers, to give up the life he knows all to save one slip of a girl he barely knows makes him a definite keeper. Thank goodness Miu figures that out.

My Thoughts:

THE HUNT, while a superbly entertaining action romance, left some unfortunate confusion in its wake. Let's start with the setting, does it take place in some alternate Egyptian reality or on a seperate planet all together? My confusion on this knew no bounds and I blame it on the mention of such names as Amun Ra and Jafar as well as elemental magic and the sparkle of treasure. All of which painted an Aladdin landscape that I had diffuclty dispelling. Further research uncovered that yes, THE HUNT does take place on another planet. This was discovered after locating the single, one and only sentence of this fact mentioned in the first chapter...

Then there was the lack of information regarding character aspects, the most glaring being Jafar's lack of Guardian facial markings. I waited endlessly as for why but discovered that while its convenient for the plot, the reason was never unveiled to my knowledge. Obviously not too determinental to the plot but for me, the lack left lingering questions.

And finally, I was more than shocked that Miu risks her life time and again for her sister but in the end, we never meet her. Instead she's rapidly wisked away at a pivital moment with nary a description. Why? Why go through all this trouble and continuous near death experiences just to end the book with no resolution between the two women? This above everthing gave me the most pause.

In summary, THE HUNT is a fun and fast paced action adventure. Its a great summer vacation read that gives just the right amount of entertainment to hurry along an otherwise slow afternoon. As debuts go, its pretty damn good but for this seasoned reader and reviewer, the questions never ceased.

As an accomplished and perhaps arrogant thief, the heroine doesn't think twice about doing as told and infiltrating the secretive and dangerous Valley of Cats to steal from their horde a particular necklace. She's got the map that will give her an advantage in the confusing and dark tunnels and she's positive she has the ability to get in and get out without capture. Pretending to be one of the virgin girls chosen for the Hunt, she instead plans to not be taken as a mate but rather take something from this clan that nobody has ever done before. Her arrogance and forthright refusal to the virgin’s test gets her into the tunnels yes, but it also gets her noticed. Now, she knows she has a tail and fears it is one of the warrior men said to be able to change into a beast.

The hero, outcast from his people because of a previous error, does not think much of the mate hunt. Never before has he had any desire to participate in the ritual and he doesn't want to now. He just wants to find out what this tiny thief wants to steal, capture her and get back to the gateway which he is supposed to be guarding. But when he lays eyes on the woman before him, he knows he's in trouble. Something about her screams at him to claim her and it's very hard to keep his cat from doing exactly that. It's clear she's up to something as no potential mate has ever chosen to flee down into the tunnels rather that the freedom of the upper level. And because she means to steal, he is meant to prove her guilt and then see her brought to his leader for punishment. She even admits she's looking for thing, something this Master- as she calls him- has instructed her to find. And as the hero bares no markings of the guardians, she imagines him to be a mercenary on the hunt for the treasure as well. He goes along with this assumption, on one hand loyal to his people and the laws he's sworn to uphold but on the other wanting to protect this woman who he knows is his destined mate.

Their journey together and the tense partnership they share ends when the heroine takes her chance to be free of her watch dog but in the process brings the attention of the rest of the guardians. Now, the hero is stuck with the choice. Mate with this stubborn and willful female and somehow find a way to save her life or surrender her to his leader and return to the safe and duty filled life below. He chooses the heroine and when it comes down to the heroine or his people, he chooses her. He allows her to take the necklace from the Valley and flees with her into the town all because he knows without that necklace her sister will never be safe. He wants to protect the heroine and have her trust him but no matter what he does it seems she is not willing or able to trust anybody. But when they discover the true purpose of the necklace and the consequences of their actions, they must find a way to stop the gateway from destroying their world and in the process learn that love and lust between them does not always have to be a war.

There were things about this book that I loved, and things that I didn't. I will start with the negative and work my way to the positive. First off, the glaring negative of this book was the heroine. She was stubborn and willful and rather stupid when it came to her choices and her utter refusal to see the reality of her situation. She called the hero arrogant but she was by far the most cock sure little shit who thought she had the answers for everything but in truth was more trouble than she was worth. Second negative, the confusing setting. I have no idea if this was supposed to be fantasy, historical? It was an Arabic or middle east setting I believe but the characters spoke with modern slang and there was no real way to judge what time period they were in or if this place was a real country. Lastly, the 'love story' was for the most part just erotic literature without a true sense of romance. The things I liked. First off, I liked the possessiveness of the hero and his strength to remain loyal to a woman who neither trusted of helped him during the story. Second, it was a decently unique premise for a story and infused mythology with middle eastern culture to make a different sort of tale. Perhaps I felt it rated somewhere in the 2 to 2.5-star range so I rounded down based on the fact that while I've read this book 3 times now, I don't have interest in reading it again anytime soon. P.S. I'm always curious with these sorts of books as it's hinted that this was intended to be a series but that It never came to be. But in this case, I don't know where the author would have taken this world if given the chance...I guess we'll never know.

The Hunt by Anne Marsh
Paranormal Romance- Sept. 29th, 2009
5 stars

The Hunt is a thrilling story that leads the reader in directions that are surprisingly unexpected and absorbing. The cast of characters are intriguing and the imaginative world and culture the author has created are captivating.

Miu is a beautiful thief, her powers with the moon make her an ideal candidate to steal the prized moon necklace from the Cat Temple. This attempt is suicidal but Miu is determined because the price of failure is her sister’s life. But the only way to enter the Cat Temple is to participate as a bride of the Hunt. In the Hunt virgin females are given a dowry and in exchange are hunted by the Cat men as potential mate. Miu decides to pretend she is one of the many brides, it is the perfect way to disguise herself, steal the necklace and escape. She definitely doesn’t want any mate must less one of the fierce Cats.

But Mui’s arrogance makes her stand out among the crowd. The leader of the temple orders Jafar, one of his most trusted Guardians to find out what mischief she is up to. And that is when trouble and passion collide! Jafar has already spotted Mui and although he is intensely attracted to her he doesn’t want any female especially after the last female he picked endangered the temple. Jafar follows Mui but because he doesn’t have the usual Cat men markings she mistakes him for a mercenary. (Jafar is a special Guardian that protects a hidden doorway to a dangerous world.) As the 2 become close Mui realizes Jafar has deceived her and although she has grown to enjoy his company she must finish her quest no matter the cost. But Mui doesn’t count on Jafar’s possessive nature and steely determination. Because he has other ideas and they all involve Mui!

I fell in love with this story and its characters! I loved the gutsy heroine and the very sexy, alpha male. The relationship between the main characters was much hotter than I expected. I really enjoyed how the hero stood by Miu. Miu is a tough character who is confident in herself and extremely focused. I liked her strong personality but as a consequence Miu has never had anyone who she could lean on before. I especially enjoyed the sections where Miu grows to trust and believe in Jafar. And readers, Jafar is irresistible! His protective and ‘animalistic’ side which made me wish I was his mate instead of Mui! Jafar defends Mui but he is no one’s fool. I liked how he recognized Miu’s worth and believed in her even when she was unsure about herself. Miu never had a chance! As she slowly lets Jafar see her vulnerable side, their developing love and respect are a true joy to read. As a side note, Anne Marsh has written equally interesting secondary characters and I would especially like to know more about the darkly tormented Hebon. (Hint!)

The Hunt is: original, imaginative and surprisingly sensual. I am crossing my fingers that this is only the first in the series of Cat Guardian books. (I can’t believe this is her first book!) This is a must read for paranormal fans especially those who love: shifter novels, smokin’ hot heroes and feisty heroines!

I had high hopes for this book. The plot is right up my alley with the mythology aspect and I was curious to see where the author would take it. Unfortunately, I found myself jaded with it by the time I finished. There seems to be a lot to the story that the author isn’t telling. I am not sure if she planned on elaborating in future installments, but she doesn’t even give us enough to really be curious. For example, the female lead will make a mental comment about her master but that’s it.

The leads were also much to be desired. There wasn’t anything about the lead female to make me like her. In fact, I felt disconnected from her as person in general.

I think my biggest problem was that I was a disappointed there wasn’t more erotica to it. We are given two scenes and they are so short I wondered why the author wasted her time. I loved the world and mythology the author created, but I guess it just wasn’t the story I wanted.

Miu is no virgin but a thief on her 100th job, the one that will release her & sister from the 'Master', but only after stealing the moonstone necklace from the catacombs of Temple of Anrub Ra. An alternate world, which houses warriors (who each have big cat form)who protect the temple & all treasures housed there & to dispatch with violence any that manage to get through the portals.....
For a cheesy smutty novel it has a better than average story line for erotica - though she definately crosses more boundaries than others of this genre. So if you are uncomfortable with voyeurism, graphic sex, mild bondage & mild S&M maybe, it's not for you....It's all huge hunky tough guy's & cheeky, stroppy , female protagomist. With a thick sensual in your face on the verge of perverse under current....

After first reading a later work by Marsh, I was almost disappointed in this novel. Though the concept of The Hunt was a good one, I couldn't get over the writing style; it seemed a tad contrived. I honestly expected better and the plot just didn't do it for me. The saving grace for this novel was the characters.
I immensely enjoyed Miu and Jafar's interactions... a bit on the steamy side of paranormal romance though. Miu is a thief on a mission and Jafar is the Guardian Cat shifter that is bent on stopping her.
There were a few times during my reading when I wanted to give up on the book, but I went ahead and kept reading. The ending was nice if not a little predictable. I really wanted to like this book, but it was only my like of Miu that gave this review two stars instead of one.

*Spoiler Alert*

Miu is fierce and cunning, but really lacks on her self-esteem. She has alot of potential, that just needs to be released.

Jafar is powerful, caring and passionate. He should have accepted that he was destined to be with Miu.

I'm alittle uncertain of how I feel about the ritual of the Hunt. It seems extremely barbaric and random. I do not care for Amun Ra whatsoever.

I was touched that Jafar was willing to give up everything to make Miu happy. He is a true mate in every way. I was glad Miu finally came around to her true feelings, I cut her some slack because its not instinctual for her like it is the weres.

It was a good entertaining book that I enjoyed!

Cheesy, action-packed, and sexy. If you're not trying to follow it word-for-word, that is. Found a number of glitches through-out, but as long as you don't remember Jafar taking Miu's knives, and a couple scenes later, she's pulling one out, or her robes falling to the ground, followed shortly by them lifted to reveal her nether-regions... you've got a nice little action tale of stubborn Cat versus stubborn femi. And it's sexy outcomes.

Good story if you're looking for a break from the current werewolves and vampires that have exploded across paranormal fantasy. Passionate with an actual storyline, and developed characters.

Not Spectacular, Just Okay!!

I liked the concept but it wasn't a great read for me, it was just okay. The phrases "lickity split" and "don't be a back seat driver" kept throwing me off as to the time period and setting. I found Miu, the main female character, to be a little annoying. Jafar, the male main character, wanted Miu but I couldn't understand why. It was frustrating and even the steamy scenes didn't keep my interest. I kept trying to speed through it to finish not because I wanted to know how everything gets resolved but because I just wanted it to end. I really wanted to like the story but it just didn't capture my interest.

Intriguing read - the concept was fresh and original. The stakes were high throughout, and I loved the slow building romance between the two main characters. However, some of the set up originally was a bit hard to follow. I didn't quite understand the whole set up at the temple, and it took me a decent chunk in to begin to understand how things operated. Overall though, another pretty good read from Anne Marsh.

"The Hunt" by Anne Marsh is an expanded but slightly re-imagined version of her novella "Pharon's Demon". Both stories had potential because the premise was interesting and original but both faltered in terms of execution. It's a quick read (with the original story being an even quicker one) so if that's what you're after, you could give it a whirl and see if it fares better with you.

Normally I love shifter books but the heroine just didn't connect with me.

Choppy flow--the main girl is an idiot. The main male lead is really powerful description and then in the book he can't do anything in an emergency. I didn't like this book.
