1. The Gingerbread Lady (Rare Confectionery Novella) by Sydney Jane Baily
Wonderful story of Daniel thinking he was doing the right think of bowing out to his friend the Duke for Madeleine’s affection to have them not wed but she leaves England comes back betrothed to another English nobleman but this time Daniel romantically fights for her and wins. Very romantic and clean.
2. The Promise of a Kiss (Regency Novella Series Book 1) by Kate Bateman
Fabulous tale of Harry Tremayne once again going to the ends of the earth, this time from London to Egypt, to rescue the most infuriating but love of his life, Lady Hester Morden. In the book, the reader is introduced to ancient tombs and curses while the two look for jewels, mummies and continue her uncles’ life’s work of map making. They suffer a loss and end up following Napoleon Bonaparte in France. What makes this book so delightfully special is Henry’s and Hester’s playful hate/love banter between the two. A clean romance except for lustful thoughts, body descriptions and passionate kisses
3. Confessions of a Hellion (Bluestockings Defying Rogues Series book 7) by Dawn Brower
Samantha Cain really was smitten with the Earl of Asthey, Jason Thompson, but there two big problems. He was friends with her overprotective brother Gregory, Lord Shelby, and Jason was a confirmed bachelor. As the years went on, all of Samantha’s friends had found their matches and the same with Jason’s friends. Samantha felt she would have to come to grips with being a spinster until she overhears a conversation between Jason and her brother. It seems the confirmed bachelor must now find a wife in 14 days and Samantha plans to be sure she’s that wife. The way the two of them work out their relationship is what makes this book special. A mad dash to Gretna Green of course adds to the excitement.
4. Ruined by a Lady (Spirited Storms Series book 3) by Jane Charles
A remarkablely unique story. While in New Orleans Mr. Samuel “Sam” Storm, son of an Earl but not the heir, purchased a portrait of a beautiful young lady poising in a risqué manner later hanging it in his home in Barbados where he has lustfully admired the young lady for several years. To his surprise while in London attending the wedding of a good friend, the young lady materializes before his very eyes and is no other than Lady Jillian Simpson, daughter of the Duke of Eldridge. Sam is beyond mesmerized by the real life Jillian and wants to get to know her better and Jillian is just as interested in Sam but her father will not allow her to even think of having anything to do with an untitled man. This story showcases how they find ways to be together without her father knowing while Jillian also comes to terms with her secrets and the past she must finally tell Sam about. A well written, two POV romance having fairly love scenes with kissing and some mildly lustful thoughts. A lot of interesting characters involved in aiding and abetting the two young lovers with the story having an ironic twist at the end.
5. Her impetuous Rakehell (The Bridgethorpe Brides book 4) by Aileen Fish
When Laurence Pierce suddenly finds himself not only the new Baron Oakhurst but also the guardian of four-year-old Louisa, (the daughter of his cousin, the late Baron Oakhurst who was killed in an uprising along with his wife), Laurence (a renown rakehell) steps up to be the guardian he needs to be for the young girl. As he does, he realizes that the sister of his best friends, Hannah Lumley, also needs someone watching over here as she is surrounded by many ill-suited suitors, one in particular. This is the story of what happens as he watches over both. The book is well written with the author doing a great job of developing the characters. I was surprised that the author did not make a better connection between Hannah and Laurence after their first kiss. After he said to her, “Now you will have that between you and any other man who tries to kiss you” and she thought, “If he’d tried to do anything more to her, she wouldn’t have stopped him. Now she understood why everyone worked so hard to keep young people apart. How easily she’d lost the desire to remain proper…. As she lay on her pillow later, she’d run through the kiss in her mind, savor every moment of it…”, I didn’t think it was proper for Hannah to be all in love with Lord Downham after that. She should have at least been doubting her true feelings for him. The author has Laurence realizing it but not Hannah. The timing of the kiss was off in regards to how the relationship between Hannah and Laurence came about. Also she didn’t compare his kiss to Lord Downham’s. The ending from the kiss on seemed less thought out, less details. I think putting the unfortunate encounter first, then their kiss might have worked better for me but the book still has plenty of good qualities to warrant reading it. It’s a clean regency romance with a cute little girl with a male puppy named Lulu and a childhood best friend protector for Hannah who grows to be her knight in shining armor.
6. Save the Last Dance for Me (Maitland Maidens Series book 1) by Cora Lee
This delightful clean romance between longtime friends Benedict Grey, a rather social introvert, and Honoria Maitland, the daughter of a Duke, is a short novella with a lot to offer in its few pages. The two make an agreement to help each other by entering into a fake courtship but as readers of this troupe already can surmise it wasn’t really fake love at all but Benedict and Honoria didn’t know that of course. These two are marvelous friends as Honoria helps Benedict learn to dance and maneuver through all the ton he in turn helps comfort her while solving her own dilemma with getting married. It doesn’t take long before friendship turns to something more but which one will be the first to admit it? The book is a less than 2 hour read but the author has done an excellent job of developing the characters of Benedict and Honoria as well as some of the minor characters and the storyline contains sufficient detail and never appears rushed.
7. The Forgotten Heiress (A Forgotten Heiress Novella book 1) by Alanna Lucas
Lovely, sweet Arabella Gledhill has lived a tragic, lonely, isolated life being tossed from one relative to another. She is now with her Uncle Nolan, the Duke of Albemarle, being transported to her first ball at the age of twenty-four where she is to find a husband immediately so that the Duke can also be rid of her. Liam Kenswreck, a “retiring” rake at the age of thirty-six, is also attending the ball and has decided to seriously start looking for a wife. You will not believe what happens to bring about a certain change in both their lives. But wait to the end because there is another surprise coming that might change their lives forever once again. The author has created some wonderful characters in this book and I couldn’t help but love both Arabella and Liam. There are many sweet moments shared between Arabella and her “ new” friends as well as with Liam.
8. Enticed by Lady Elianna (Fabled Love Book 3) by Amanda Mariel
A lovely story of our hero, Lord Sinclair, rescuing his damsel in distress, Lady Elianna, from the ill treatment forced upon her from her distant cousin the seventh Earl of Berkeley and his family. This a short regency romance yet well written with the character development absolutely perfect. A clean romance with a very flirty viscount and a beautiful diamond of the first water untainted by the ton.
9. Earl of Weston’s (Wicked Earl’s Club ) Anna St. Claire with Lauren Harrison
I am still chuckling hours after reading the story of Archie. No Archie is not the Earl of Weston but he’s definitely the hero and star of this book. I will concede that it was the responses of our Earl of Weston, Edward Hunter, and his friend since childhood, Thomas Bergen the fifth Earl of Bergen, that make the antics of Archie so much more comical. And true their first reactions to our wonderfully, delightful heroine, Harriet “ Hattie” Longbottom were priceless but still our super hero is Archie. So, by now you may be wondering just who is Archie? Oh he’s not a who but an it…he’s Hattie’s most cherished companion…her parrot a popinjay and when he gets anxious he repeats everything he hears and he indeed hears quite a bit in this book. The cheeky humor in this book is off the scale but so is the subtle romance as it sneaks up on our Earl of Weston. He might be a rake but when he gets himself into a compromising situation he shows he is of honor immediately and the protective side of him overflows even more. Weston and Bergen are quite a pair together. And then there’s our sweet, prim and proper Hattie who thought she would be a spinster after caring for her ailing mother and now at twenty-six she is coming to live in her half-brother’s home. On the way she’s left by the stagecoach she was traveling on but our two rakes Weston and Bergen, being raised true gentleman, offer to assist her to where she is to meet her brother. That meeting and what happens later that night will forever change her life. Hattie proves to be a force to be reckoned with when she first puts her snarky sister-in-law in her place and then helps solve a murder mystery. My favorite quote comes from Hattie’s thoughts. She wears glasses but hers got broken when she first encountered Weston so he gave her a new pair but unfortunately they also got knocked from her face and were missing. She was very distraught over losing them because of them having been such a special gift. This is her thoughts: “the missing spectacles that symbolized everything she hoped for in a marriage: sight, thoughtfulness, kindness, and perhaps the promise of love” This book is a winner in humor, romance and mystery.
10. A Wicked Earl’s Widow (Once Upon a Widow book 2) by Aubrey Wynne
A difficult story to read because it deals with physical abuse against a wife and daughter but such unfortunate realities of life bring forth the compassion and love found within the pages of this book also. Eliza is the daughter of the Marquess of Landonshire, an wicked abusive man who beats his wife and daughter to make sure they comply to his wishes. He arranged her marriage to Carson Roker, Earl of Sunderland, whose reputation was of a rogue but her father cared not nor did she because she would escape her father. I must say that I believe the title of the book to be unfair to Carson, the Earl of Sunderland, by labeling him the “Wicked Earl” because even though he had been a rogue, he and Eliza found a common bond and if it wasn’t love it was close. Carson’s words to Eliza, “For the first time in my life, I feel like someone’s hero. You make me want to be the man I see.” The “Wicked One” was truly her father the Marquess. Unfortunately, Carson is killed in a horse riding “accident” leaving Eliza to mourn with their young daughter Althea. Her in-laws love them both and offer her a place to live for as long as she likes but her wicked father has plans for her. He will sell her off as a bride to his business partner for more money. If she doesn’t comply, he will beat her mother, her and take Althea. This is the story of how Eliza deals with his threat and how along the way this timid, abused girl becomes a strong woman finding love and peace in the end. A gripping story that includes a Viscount, Nathaniel Pendleton, with a bloodhound both proving to be very heroic, a man coming to grips with not being like his father and a mother’s confession leading to a powerful love for his “ avenging angel”. A quote from the book that I think is worthy to remember to give those hurting hope: “You are not weak but scarred. Terrible wounds do that. But the pain goes away and with time the scar fades. It may never totally disappear. I know that. But it will grow fainter as the years go by.”
You won’t regret finding time to read this book. All the books within it are fabulous stories.

I love collections like this. They give you a chance to read new authors, discover series that you may have missed, meet new characters and escape into worlds created by some very talented people. That being said, this is a fabulous group of stories. Each one contains surprises, vivid characters, an exciting storyline and will engage your imagination and emotions. They are short enough to read at one sitting, but long enough to satisfy……and there is nothing more yummy than a reformed rogue!

The Gingerbread Lady (Rare Confectionery Novella) - Sydney Jane Bailey
Madeleine and Daniel
Delightful! Once again, an overbearing meddlesome father almost ruins the day. Madeleine and her family left for the Continent after her public humiliation when the Duke of Pelham who had courted her did not propose. Three years later she returned engaged to Baron Ridley. Daniel, Viscount Waverly, had been in love with Madeleine, but stepped aside when his best friend, the Duke of Pelham, decided to pursue her. Now that she was back, nothing would stop him from having her, not even her pesky fiance. This story has lots of delicious moments, some surprising revelations, wonderful characters and a sweet ending! Loved it!

The Promise of a Kiss (Regency Novella Series #1) - Kate Bateman
Harry and Hester
Ah, ‘go away closer’! Harry and Hester had a history. She caused trouble, and he rescued her…much to her dismay. When his Aunt offered him significant money to bring her home from Egypt, Harry agreed. And so what follows is an exciting tale of danger, theft, an ancient curse, and a furtuitous rainstorm. The banter between Harry and Hester is humorous and entertaining, and their tiptoeing around their fellings for each other is comical. This is a quick enjoyable story sure to hold your interest and brighten your day.

Confessions of a Hellion (Bluestockings Defying Rogues #7) - Dawn Brower
Samantha and Jason
A grandfather’s edict; an inheritance on the line; an overprotective and overbearing brother; and a mad dash to Scotland make this an exciting story. Jason had always been the one Samantha loved. However, he was one of her brother’s friends and she knew her brother wouldn’t approve. When certain circumstances arose, she took matters into her own hands. This is a delightful tale with wonderful characters, deep friendships and evolving emotions. So much fun!

Ruined by a Lady (Spirite Storms #3) - Jane Charles
Jillian and Samuel
As the only daughter of a duke, Jillian’s life was strictly controlled. Her father decided with whom she could converse, dance and court, expecting her to comply or suffer his angry lectures. Samuel noticed Jillian at his best friend’s wedding. She looked remarkably like the woman in a painting he owned. When he made himself known to Jillian, her father forbade her from seeing him since he was not titled and socially beneath her. Add to that Samuel’s great-uncle disparaging her, and the stage was set for major conflict. This story tells of a clandestine courtship between a young lady who believes herself unlovable, and a gentleman who promises to prove her wrong. There are many intriguing characters who voice their opinions and/or offer support, so that in the end love prevails. Forgiveness is an underlying theme, as is that of family. This is an entertaining and heartwarming tale.

Her Impetuous Rakehell (Bridethprope Brides #4) - Aileen Fish
Hannah and Laurence
Hannah and Laurence knew each other ever since her brothers had brought him home on vacations from school and made him part of their family. When a death in the family left him with a ward and a title, he decided to try and gain a more respectable reputation, by attending more Society events. Meanwhile Lord Downham was courting Hannah, and she was expecting a proposal any minute…..but when things blew up, Laurence was there to save the day. So you have an orphaned little girl, a rogue with a reputation, an outrageous scandal brewing and a puppy to add to the chaos. This is a captivating tale filled with humor, heartbreak and the promised happy ending.

Save the Last Dance for Me (Maitland Maidens #1) - Cora Lee
Honoria and Benedict
Benedict just returned from six years in Greece where he discovered and cataloged artifacts. His cousin, to whom he was heir, discussed the necessity for Benedict to marry and have sons to carry on the family name. The problem was that Benedict did not enjoy or do well in social functions. When his best friend Honoria, whom he had not seen in years, literally fell into his arms at a ball, things changed. This is a story wherein two best friends who have not been together for six years find their footing. As she teaches him to dance and be more sociable in order to gain a wife, Honoria discovers her true feelings for him. They make a awkwardly cute couple, and this story is emotional and entertaining with a charming ending.

The Forgotten Heiress - Alanna Lucus
Arabella and Liam
Arabella’s mother died giving birth to her, and her father died shortly thereafter. She was shuttled from home to home until her grandmother took her in. Her grandmother was a recluse, did not allow Arabella to have friends, and taught her to be seen and not heard. When her grandmother died, Arabella was sent to live with her uncle who never had a kind word for her. She was compromised at her very first ball requiring her marry Liam, Viscount Kenwreck. This story is about a young woman coming into her own, and a gentleman desperately trying not to become the monster his father was. There are some very sweet moments, as well as a few frightening ones. It is an emotional awakening with vivid characters and a few surprises. Very well done!

Enticed by Lady Elianna (Fable Love #3) - Amanda Mariel
Elianna and Garrett
Upon the death of her father, a distant cousin became the Earl of Berkly. He informed the seventeen year old Elianna that she had a choice, the convent or service to his family. Five years of servitude later, while chaperoning the Earl’s daughter Caroline in London, they met Lord Sinclair. Caroline set her cap for him, but he was enchanted by Elianna. Hoping to see less of Caroline and more of her companion Elianna, Garrett, Lord Sinclair, accepted an invitation to her family’s house party. What follows is a Cinderella-ish tale wherein Garrett discovers love, and Elianna gains her freedom. Anna, Rose and Aubry are loyal, steadfast and determined to thwart Lord and Lady Berkly and their selfish brat Caroline. Revenge is sweet, and I love how Garrett got his. A most enjoyable and satisfying story.

Earl of Weston - Anna St. Claire and Lauren Harrison
Hattie and Edward
Oh so good! A rogue earl on a mission to avenge his brother’s death, a spinster with a chatty pet, and a house party all come together to create a tale full of unexpected happenings. After an unusual introduction, Hattie and Edward find themselves at the same house party, which leads to a more prolonged association than either of them expected. Familial dynamics come into play, as does friendship, loyalty and a flighty hero.

A Wicked Earl’s Widow (Once Upon a Widow #2) - Aubrey Winn
Eliza and Nate
Eliza is a young widow with an adorable little girl, living with her in-laws. When her despicable and abusive father finds himself in financial trouble, he decides to sell her to one of his cronies to settle his debts. He will use any means necessary to make that happen, including kidnapping her daughter and beating her mother. Eliza’s in-laws send the two of them to stay with their other son, who is married to Eliza’s cousin, in order to keep them safe. Along the way an incident occurs during which she meets she meets Nate, who just happens to be good friends with her cousin. While Eliza and her daughter Althea hide out at Nate’s estate, her father continues to search for her. This story has some truly horrifying moments in what is otherwise a delightful tale of a budding romance. There are a few surprises, and side stories, but for the most part you will find yourself either, sighing, smiling or cursing. Nate is a stand-up guy, Eliza is stronger than she thinks, Althea is a hoot, and her partner Cyrano saves the day. This is quite a story!.

10 Previously Published, But Good, Historical Romances

I love a good romance anthology, especially one with historical romances like this one. This box set contains 10 stories, and the entire anthology is just over 1,200 pages long; so each is a decent novella length. As the stories are novellas, there isn't quite as much development as you may see in a novel, but still, these authors have created characters you can care about and want to root for, even if a few of the heroes drive you a little crazy! One thing I've noted lately in historical romance—and is certainly true in this book—is that historical romance is getting nearly as trope-laden as contemporary romance. This book has tropes including enemies to lovers, friends to lovers, second chance at romance, off-limits relationships, and the like. For as long as I've been reading historical romance, I'm surprised that some of these authors were new to me, like Sydney Jane Baily, Kate Bateman, and Anna St. Claire, but this box set certainly has a few favorites like Dawn Brower, Amanda Mariel, and Aubrey Wynne. But the introduction of new-to-me authors is one of my favorite reasons for picking up a relatively inexpensive box set like this one. I'm always open to finding new favorites or authors whose works I will seek out. If you enjoy historical romance as much as I do, you will probably enjoy this box set as much as I did.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Ten great short stories from ten fabulous authors. All of these are short enough to be read quickly and all deal with a reformed rogue.

The Gingerbread Lady - Sydney Jane Bailey- 2nd chance love along with some gingerbread.

The Promise of a Kiss - Kate Bateman- an Egyptian adventure complete with a curse. As with most Kate Bateman stories, plenty of witty banter makes this enemies-to-lovers story great.

Confessions of a Hellion - Dawn Brower- marrying the brother's friend, an off-to-Scotland adventure.

Ruined by a Lady - Jane Charles- forbidden love and a deep sense of family.

Her Impetuous Rakehell - Aileen Fish- childhood acquaintances with a hero that saves her reputation.

Save the Last Dance for Me- Cora Lee- friends to lovers in a fake turned real relationship.

The Forgotten Heiress - Alanna Lucus- a sheltered orphan is compromised and forced to wed, can it turn to love?

Enticed by Lady Elianna - Amanda Mariel- a very well done Cinderella tale.

Earl of Weston - Anna St. Claire and Lauren Harrison- a house party meet cute with humor.

Wicked Earl’s Widow - Aubrey Winn- to escape her horrible father, a young widow with a daughter hides out and meets her prince.

All great in their own way and highly recommended.
