In his most recent book, "Echo of the Soul", popular author Philip Newell explored what it meant to be made in the image of God. The Hebrew scriptures and Celtic Christianity alike rejoiced that our physical selves bear the marks of the Creator whereas the Western church has tended to define humanness by its tendency to sin. This beautiful book, illustrated with Jewish manuscript throughout helps us to reclaim a lost heritage and teaches us to recognize the widsom, strength, love and presence of God through each other.
JOHN PHILIP NEWELL is an internationally acclaimed spiritual teacher and popular speaker and the widely read author of several books, including Listening for the Heartbeat of God and A New Harmony. The former Warden of Iona Abbey in the Western Isles of Scotland, he is the founder of The School of Earth and Soul (A Celtic Initiative of Study, Spiritual Practice and Compassionate Action) and teaches regularly in California, New England, Virginia, Colorado, New Mexico, and Canada as well as leading international pilgrimages to Iona.
This is daily spiritual meditation that combines Celtic, Jewish, and Christian traditions and offers brief thoughts and images for each day. The result is very simple, elegantly illustrated, with scripture references primarily from the Torah. I love how earthy this and all Philip's books are. I'm not much of a daily meditator, but this is a lovely book to pick up from time to time to reconnect to your spirit.
What brings you a light in the morning and a peace with the day's close? This Psalter is a balm for the soul, deepening the dawn and twilight hours. The micrography illustrations are superb as well. I have enjoyed this book for many years, and mornings, and evenings now, and will for years to come. Full of gentle wisdom.
I found this book while browsing the used book section of a local bookstore. What a pleasant surprise! I immediately began using it during my morning meditation and Centering Prayer time. I love the earthiness of Celtic spirituality and Reverend Dr. Newell’s simple and beautiful words really grounded me in all the right ways. Absolutely beautiful illustrations as well. Great little book!
Very short. Page 53 “In the gift of this new day,/ in the gift of the present moment,/ in the gift of time and eternity intertwined/ let us be grateful/ let us be attentive/ let us be open to what has never happened before,/ in the gift of this new day,/ in the gift of the present moment,/ in the gift of time and eternity intertwined.
A beautiful little book of prayers/poems enhanced by color reproductions of paintings by Tobi Kahn. I've already used Newell's work in devotional with a small group. I'm sure I will use more of it as unison prayer or benediction in worship.
I have never before regularly used the same prayer book. But I have kept this at my bedside and used morning and evening for a full week. I love the artwork and the prayers are beautiful. Brief and perfect way to begin and close my day.
