This non-fiction series aims to encourage children to access the wonder of the world around them. The books have two reading levels, with a simple sentence on each page for beginners, and more complex information for more confident readers.
Katie has been writing non-fiction children's books for almost half her life and loves questioning the world from a child's point of view. She's developed some of Usborne's bestselling series, including the See Inside books and the Lift-the-Flap Questions & Answers series.
The book we read has an updated cover - not sure if the content was updated from the original as well.
I have written it before but - we love this Usborne Beginner's History series and have all the books in the set. The text is right at the level where my 2nd grader feels comfortable (with a few words she hasn't encountered and is great for increasing her vocabulary). Since my daughter has a bit of a higher reading level, I think this is in the 2nd -4th grade wheelhouse, depending on the reader.
This book gives you a beginning look into Ancient Romans' lives, and brings up topics for discussion like: slavery, Gladiator games (violence),separation of rich and poor, gods and goddesses, inequality of genders, etc. I love exposing my kids to history in this fun, easy to read format that helps history come alive for them. My daughter especially loves to compare how they lived then with how she lives now.
Contents are as follows: -In Roman Times - People of Rome - At Home - On the Streets - What to Wear - Going Shopping - Farming - Banquets - At the baths - Gods & Goddesses - Building Power - At School - In the Army - Games & Races - Glossary of Roman Words - Websites to Visit - Index
I love these Usborne Beginners non-fiction books! We have been reading the History set as part of our homeschool. Bite size bits of info with great graphics/photography and even quicklinks to extend your study! Great for elementary age children.
