A re-telling of the traditional Chinese fable for children just beginning to read. When the Monkey King angers the Emperor of Heaven, he is set a task by Buddha to determine whether he is to be punished or not. Will he pass or will he fail? Featuring the charismatic illustrations of Germano Ovani. Usborne Young Reading has been developed in conjunction with reading experts from Roehampton University.
Tells of the Vices of Pride; With the exception of the last of the 3 stories, the other 2 feel incomplete; good intro to mischevious monkey, Chinese Culture, Buddhism,; Very cute
The illustrations in this book are vibrant and detailed. I don't think I would read this book in class because it deals with sensitive religious material and features Buddha. Also, I'm not to fond of the ending: the monkey's eternal punishment is being buried alive by Buddha. I'm not sure my children would appreciate a book like this. If I were to read about Buddhism, I would most likely chose a more realistic description of the religion instead of a folk tale.
