The Crook Who Crossed the Golden Gate Bridge is a mystery chapter book about four friends who go on a school field trip to San Francisco and start investigating a sudden wave of pickpocketing on the cable car. The four friends, Gum, Sam, Egg, and Cat, watch two people they know get robbed and decide they will find whoever the thief is. They find clues throughout the story and continue looking for the thief until they finally discover who it was and the thief gets arrested. It turned out that the thief was stealing because her mom was sick and they were struggling financially because her mother can’t work and this was the way she thought she could help her family. This book resonated with me because I have always enjoyed mysteries and even though it is a children’s book, I was still intrigued and wanted to know what would happen next.
This is a mystery book that could be read as a read-aloud or independently. I would recommend a read-aloud for second grade because they are still developing their reading fluency. Older students can read it independently but I would recommend this book for children between second to fourth grade. This book should be introduced for students in elementary school in this genre because it is a very intriguing book that students will definitely enjoy reading. They will also learn that even though stealing is wrong, some people do it because they feel that it is the only way they can support their loved ones. One activity I would do with my students would be a discussion about stealing and why it is wrong but trying to understand why some people do it. This book explains very well that even though Jack was stealing to support her family, she would still face the consequences of her actions because what she did is wrong and I think it is a good discussion to have with students. Another activity I would do is to learn about the city of San Francisco and its historical impact on the USA. Also I would like to teach students about cable cars because I did not know what cable cars were until a few years ago and I think it is a very interesting thing to learn about.
Take an adventure of finding a crook on a field trip to San Franciso! Cat, Sam, Egg, and Gum are having a normal field trip when mysterious things start to happen. A crook took someone's wallet. After that incident, more people were losing their wallets. Can Cat, Sam, Egg, and Gum find the crook before it's too late? Read the book to find out more.
This fits a needed niche of an early chapter book for an older reader. The protagonists are middle school aged, but are polite and respectful in the very light mystery. My 8 yo tore through these in no time, but, like I said, they're not meant to be high literature. They're helpful little books if you have a not very confident reader.
Very good episode of Field Trip Mysteries! Fast paced, kept me wanting more. Before you know it you'll be finished. Had very nice picture. But in me opinion, no enough. Nice book!
