A Marvelous Ministry: How the All-Round Ministry of Charles Spurgeon Speaks to Us Today

Rate this book
Of all the great preachers of Victorian Britain, Charles Haddon Spurgeon continues to exercise a profound influence over one hundred years after his death in 1892. His sermons and other publications are being reprinted and now circulate even more widely than in his lifetime. This collection of essays highlights various aspects of his remarkable life and ministry. Spurgeon emerges as a person of warm humanity, a passionate evangelist, a controversial Mr. Valiant for Truth, and a social activist of decided political convictions. At point after point Spurgeon, though now with the Church triumphant, speaks to the Church today and calls her to a new commitment to the gospel of grace. As Dr. Timothy George says in his foreword, 'In our own era of compromise and concession, we need urgently to heed Spurgeon's appeal. The price of theological integrity, like that of liberty, is eternal vigilance.'

This collection of essays on the life and ministry of Charles Spurgeon is a serious and helpful addition to all Spurgeon scholarship. Collected on the 100th anniversary year of Spurgeon's death, the authors cover (1) how Spurgeon speaks today, (2) his biography, (3) on gospel invitations, (4) his social concern, (5) the Downgrade Controversy, and (6) his activity in politics.

With the breadth of Spurgeon's life (though he only lived until 57), these essays cannot cover all aspects of his life and ministry, but they cover such a wide swath that the reader walks away with an understanding of Spurgeon's convictions. One can only benefit from this.

Spurgeon was the most well-known English preacher in the last half of the 1800's. His sermons were published weekly during his lifetime and after in booklet format and were called "The Metropolitan Tabernacle Pulpit" (Metropolitan Tabernacle was Spurgeon's church in London). He was heard and read by thousands each week. This book is the story of the idea, publication, circulation, and life-changing effect of these printed messages, which are still in print today in the "Metropolitan Tabernacle Pulpit" series of 63 volumes (1 book of 52 sermons for each year they were originally published, 1855-1917).

I just finished up this short biography on the Prince of Preachers, Charles Spurgeon. The church is in dire need of preachers today who earnestly call men to Christ and preach the doctrines of sovereign grace as Spurgeon did!! What love for Christ and love for the lost he had.
