Dear God, he began. Please don't let her kill me. Even if I m bad. Don t let her beat me to death. I ... I can do better. I can. But I don't want to die. If ever there was a life without hope, it's David's. As a little boy, his world is void of love, light, kindness, and happiness. He has no one to look to for protection; indeed, the adults in his life all betray him. His mother abandons him. His father is absent from his life. His step-mother beats him mercilessly. And in some ways the worst of all, those who profess to be religious and Christ-like turn a blind eye on his situation and see him as everyone else a stupid, lazy, worthless boy. As David grows, he desperately tries to escape his past. After years of heavy drinking and broken marriage promises, David begins to realize that there must be another way. Somewhere, there must be a true escape. Eventually, David will learn that there is only one way to the light, and for that, he must rely on the help of the only One who can help him conquer the demons raging inside him. The journey back will be the hardest he's ever faced, and if he fails, both his life and his soul will be lost forever. Broken is the true story of one man's journey to the darkest corners of Hell and back.
My mom's book club read this and it sounds like an amazing story. I checked it out from the library but I'm just not sure if I'll handle it very well 8 1/2 months pregnant. It sounds a little intense.
Ugh..this was a disturbing book. I read it in 2 days though. I like books like these where people face amazing odds and overcome them. But it leaves you asking "why was I born into such a loving family?" This man lives in Idaho Falls. You never know what is going on behind closed doors even in your own backyard.
I didn't like how it was written with the main character telling his true life story to someone fictitious. Her whole story line...I couldn't be bothered knowing that her life was fiction. I think he could have written his story without the aid of Alice. I wanted to say...if this is a true story, leave her out. I didn't like having to switch back and forth.
This book is by David Dickson, who grew up in Antioch and is a friend of DJ's. The book is about a man who had to overcome a horrible childhood that no one should have to go through. It is a true story with a fictional character added for an outlet to tell his story. Definitely a good read. I have a copy of the book that I will loan out but I would want it back when you're done!
This book touched my core in a way it hasn't been touched before. I was truly touched by the relating of events that happened in the life of David Briggs. I won't be the same. This book gave me insight into the lives of others without hope, and ideas of how to reach others who are in despair. What a great read. I cried alot throughout this book. We all have broken things to mend.
This was hard to read, but very inspirational. Makes you feel better about your own life. It's not a book you can read before bedtime, you might not be able to sleep.
