I have loved his version of the famous pirate queen Anne bonny since 2002. Many romance authors have taken his research and turned it into novels since.
3.5 // i miss writing reviews. hello. i went into this book very tentatively, seeing as it was written in the 1960s by a man about a controversial woman, but i was pleasantly surprised by the way she was portrayed throughout the book. i think the author did a good job of showing what a stubborn and indignant woman anne bonny supposedly was. she takes no shit and i love her (she’s a little controversial but who really knows what happens back in the 1700s! i’ll give her the benefit of the doubt). i know this book is advertised as a biography, but i took that with a grain of salt and had a fun time!! but because of this nonfiction, history-telling aspect of the writing, some of the chapters dragged on a bit for me, and that’s why i didn’t give it four stars. whenever it started reading more like a textbook and less like a novel i got a little stuck, but i think that’s more of a me problem and less of a problem with the book itself. overall a really interesting look into a really interesting woman. also mary read is the shit and i love her.
This book claims to be non-fiction, but parts of it sure sound like fiction, e.g., romantic scenes. Still, it is a good story of a female pirate. I was surprised how fast this book could be read.
