A thorough discussion of the topic, from a stop-the-bleeding perspective

Mark Twain once noted that, "Everyone complains about the weather, but no one does anything about it. I was reminded of this quote while reading Darrell Ankarlo's Illegals: The Unacceptable Cost of America's Failure to Control Its Borders . Everyone has an opinion about illegal immigration, but precious few people have even seen the border, let alone know anything about the high cost of illegal immigration, the physical danger it creates, how it is done and the long-term damage it does to the United States.

This is an eye-opening, scary look at the world of illegal immigrants - the dangers of crossing the border, the coyotes who guide them across, the drug gangs, and the U.S. Border Patrol. The first half of the book is a powerful and consuming introduction to how immigrants cross the border, how the Border Patrol pursues its policy of "catch and release" and the extreme poverty of parts of Mexico that induces so many to try to come to El Norte.

Ankarlo is not anti-Mexican or anti-Hispanic. He is anti-illegal immigrant. He correctly notes that several of the 9/11 hijackers were a different kind of illegal alien - the kind that comes on a work or student visa (or something of that nature) and just does not leave. Ankarlo claims that 40% of all illegal aliens are that type...

Ankarlo is a radio host from Arizona, a state at the forefront of the immigration debate. Frustrated by misinformation and ignorance, he decided to go to the border to investigate illegal immigration himself. This book details the multifaceted struggle being faced by all and how America has become paralyzed to do anything about it. Ankarlo attempts to present a balanced view of the issue, from the illegals themselves, to the border agents (both American and Mexican), to our elected officials. Uncovering the truth behind what the illegals go through to get to the border, the harrowing risks our border agents take to try to protect our way of life, to the ignorance of politicians and the general public, the picture he paints is one of hopeless inevitability. Withought massive overhaul, the statistics he cites inticate an overwhelming population shift that will leave the United States government helpless to fight it.

This book is well written and engaging without being overly preachy. It is informative and should serve as a wakeup call to all concerned about preserving cultural identity, both American and Latino.

This is a great book on the subject of illegal immigration and immigration to America in general. However Darrell Ankarlo can't keep his subjectivity aside - he uses "I'm angry about..." and "What really makes me irate..." an alarming amount which can easily make readers defensive and discredit him as an author on the subject. Often he says "We Americans are angry about..." when a lot of times I find myself disagreeing with his statements. With all of that said, he covers virtually all angles on the border conflict and brings numbers to the table to back his opinions. He brings a great argument to the surface about the future of America with its current trends regarding illegal immigrants' presence in the country and the U.S. political environment. He also talks about NAFTA and describes their intentions of creating a "European Union" like partnership on America's soil.

He has a solid argument supporting his opinion but what I enjoyed the most was the general information regarding the border situation. I was able to build my own opinions and construct my own predictions as I progressed through each chapter. It was definitely a good read and I recommend it to anyone that is interested in what's going on down in the South along our neighbor's northern perimeter.

When I received the book Illegals: The Unacceptable Cost of America's Failure to Control its Borders by Darrell Ankarlo I thought it might be just full of information and facts, and well, a bit boring. But I was pleasantly surprised. It was not at all boring and I could not put it down. In fact, I plan to read it again, and again. It is full of stories about illegal immigration, border crossings, crimes. There is a personal eye-opening touch to the book. Ankarlo went and lived the actual life that people along the border live. I think every politician in the United States of America needs to go and live life in border towns (on both the US and Mexican side) for one month, and then maybe they will know what they are talking about. I think this book should be required reading to all high school students. In fact, I think this book should be required reading for every American.

The author is clear in his opinion on what should be done to our American borders. What I like though is he covers all angles and sides. He talks to the border patrol, he talks to illegals and to the coyotes who helps bring these people to our country. He does not just say this is my viewpoint and enough said. He gives every side a chance to explain why they do what they do. It gives the readers a chance to make an informed decision. If you have one view on this topic , reading the book can confirm or change your mind. Everyone should take an interest in this book. It is what is happening in present day and the near
future. Knowledge is power.

I received this book for free in exchange for 2 reviews.

An examination of the issue of illegal immigration into the United States. The author explores motives for this invasion of America as well as some possible solutions. He lightly touches on the ideal of national sovereignty and the rule of law. He lets misinformed ideas of supporters of illegal immigration stand almost unchallenged. While a good start on the issue it could use better development.

A stunning look at just how bad the problem is. This book brings to light the real problem when illegal immigration is overlooked by the government, it makes the human beings making that trek victims in every possible way. Anyone who cares about the illegal immigration problem should read this book.

Not a book I agree with at all. The insights are heavily jaded against the mexican immigrant. I began reading it to better understand the contrary to my belief in regards to immigration. No opinions have been changed, but I certainly can appreciate the other guys perspective with more clarity.

I appreciate Ankarlo's description of the inhumane toll that the lack of a solid border policy produces. I could not agree more with the description of the problem. In this way, the book was informative. My conclusions on approaching the problem are far different from his, however.

I agreed with some of it, but I have my own opinions. You cannot fully control a border without "brute force" Even then it takes forever, I rather let them come over so we don't have to worry about it.
