Although this book is gorgeous to flip through, it is almost entirely unreadable page-by-page. The story is decent, but the artwork is so muddled, it's extremely confusing to figure out what is happening. And the truth is, the story is not terribly complicated, so that's kind of hard to accomplish. Clearly the artist was influenced by Ben Templesmith of "30 Days of Night" fame, but lacks the ability to allow the abstract art to enhance the story. Instead, it detracts from it. It's actually sad - I meet these guys at a convention, it's where I bought the book, and they were really cool. This just wasn't one of their success stories.

HARBOR MOON is a graphic novel about a town in Maine hiding a deadly secret. Tim Vance, a veteran of the Iraq war has gone to Harbor Moon to find Andrew O’Callaghan the man who called Tim claiming to be his father. After growing up in orphanages this is a great surprise to Tim. When he arrives in the small town he is greeted with threats and hostility, most strenuously by Patrick and his two thug friends. Tim discovers that Andrew has been murdered but along the way he also discovers something about himself that will tie him to the people of Harbor Moon and their special secret.
HARBOR MOON is about werewolves….and I’m not really giving anything away here. The citizens of Harbor Moon, Maine just want to be left alone to live in peace. They think of themselves as “a species, not a curse”. They aren’t dangerous unless pushed to their emotional or physical limits but there is an organization that is out to destroy them all. They are called the Brotherhood of the Moon and they are ruthless. We are introduced to the Brotherhood rather quickly here and I wish there had been more about them here. There’s also a brief glimpse into the history of the town and its purpose but I wanted more.
The story is a good one even though it lacks background and it’s written rather well. The artwork is beautiful and dark however there were some spots where it was a little too vague and I became confused over who was who. It wasn’t enough to turn me off to the story though. There is also a shot at the end of the people of the town that compared to the darkness of the rest of the art came off as a bit cheesy to me. I liked the book but was disappointed by its lack of background. I think fans of the werewolf sub-genre will enjoy HARBOR MOON.

I went in not knowing what to expect, and came out disappointed. I read other reviews praising the storytelling and knocking the art. I found all of it to be rather muddled and confusing.

At times, the art was somewhat interesting in the sketchy, highly saturated colors. Others, it just left me confused and unsure what was happening on the page. The story contributed to that as well. Maybe it was more of the fact that I couldn't find myself invested in the story, so I found myself confused and unsure what was unfolding for the majority of the issue.

I'm already forgetting most of what happened, and probably won't be inclined to pick up another issue again.

There's a very intricate story woven through this, but the art distracted me too much, as there were some very rough panels. Sometimes I couldn't tell what I was looking at, and the panel sequences were unruly. Overall, the art was moody, dark and mysterious, which I think was the intention (see "Fell" for something similar), but too often the panel's drive for moodiness lead to ambiguity. Also, word balloon placement! There needs to be order. You can't have one word balloon centered over the corners of 4 adjacent panels! How does the reader know where they should be going next?

I had to give this a 5 star rating. Not only is it an awsome werewolf tale but it was signed by the author before it was sent. Not only is Ryan Colucci a very talented individual he's also really nice fellow.

As a collection of art pieces, this is a gorgeous book.
As a story, it's a cool twist on the werewolf that I don't see too often.
But as a graphic novel, it really has issues.

Typically, speech bubbles follow right-to-left and top-to-bottom, like English writing. They can be placed nearly anywhere in a panel (or even between panels) and will remain easily readable if they follow that pattern. In this, they generally work that way, but sometimes glaringly break form and make the dialogue confusing until you puzzle out the intended order.

The art style, although gorgeous, doesn't do very well to distinguish the different characters. There are a few characters who I kept mixing up with the protagonist. It also falters in action scenes: I see awesome werewolves, fists colliding, and electric whips swinging, but I frequently don't understand how they all connect.

Although these issues hampered the reading experience quite a bit, I did still enjoy the book and they're relatively easy areas to improve. The story and art are great, they just don't work together perfectly. If Colucci ever decides to create a sequel that improves on the original's flaws, I'd be all for it!

Not a favorite. Felt the story and art style were scattered.

Timothy Vance recently returned from active service, receives a phone call from a long forgotten Father and arrives in the elusive town Harbour Moon to find him.
Harbour Moon is a town full of secrets, there's the stereotypical hard ass sheriff, a town bully and an attractive teacher who attempts to help but is soon warned off.

A close knit community, the locals are tight lipped and unhelpful to the point of threatening but Tim soon gets a lead which gets him ever closer to discovering the towns secret. Things don't exactly go to plan and soon he realises there is no way out of Harbour Moon.

Visually the detail is very abstract, sometimes like an unfinished oil painting, an attempt at a dark, moody, mysterious setting but that said the cover art is impressive and certainly sets the tone. I also found the imagery a little disconcerting, enough so that characters physical identities blend into each other and unless there is an obvious difference such as long or no hair, dark haired characters look to much alike. You either like the artwork or you don't, alot relies on shadow and your imagination, with some vivid colours to draw the eye.

The story is structured fairly well, with the back story filled in as you go but it does tend to stutter occasionally and some of the concepts are familiar but the big reveal is handled admirably.

This gets a star bump-up simply because the story is so compelling. I only wish that the art wasn't such a high-concept hodgepodge.

I would love to see a volume 2, if only to clean up an obviously brilliant story's confusing character pencils. Don't make everyone look like lantern-jawed jocks & you're looking at an amazing new series folks.

I enjoyed the book! Thanks Ryan for allowing me to read this with a free copy. Good story and very fast pace. The visuals on the graphics were done very well too. This is one of very few graphic novels read by me and I was glad to have the chance. Keep up the good writing. Well done.

I only have a standard Kindle so I can't do a true review. The look of this comic style story was amazing and the short look into the series was good but I was not able to get into the story because of my Kindle.

A top notch graphic novel with an engrossing story to boot. Can't wait for more from this team.
