Micah Marius is fourth of seven brothers, warriors that fight against the demons of his world. He's used to fighting hard, being in life or death situations on a daily basis, and pushing the softer part of his personality to the side. He isn't prepared for his reaction when he meets Riley, a sexy little vampire doctor and his fated mate. Hell, Micah isn't even gay, but he can't seem to control his reaction to the man that he knows belongs to him. Riley is a vampire doctor. He's also unconventional, secretive, and dealing with a heavy case of lust toward the warrior in his care.
[Siren Classic ManLove: Erotic Alternative Paranormal Romance, Vampires, Demons]
This is a great start to a new series, set in a paranormal world with slightly different 'rules' than the ones I've previously read. It was fun to begin learning about this one, and I suspect that future books (two of which have already been published) will add to the richness of Joyee's imaginings.
I really enjoyed this story about Micah, a typical alpha-male bad-ass vampire warrior, who falls for Riley, an unconventional vampire doctor who believes he can learn from human medicine to help vampires heal from their fights with demons (rogue vampires in this world). Micah has had to be very tough to survive what he does as a warrior, and I enjoyed accompanying him on his voyage of discovery about his softer side.
Riley brings out that softer side in Micah. Even though it happened a little too quickly and easily for my taste, I enjoyed reading about this development. I liked their banter and attempts at compromise, and would have liked to see a lot more of their struggle. It was just such fun!
I hope the sequels will give us more explosive relationships like this!
3.5 stars. They said Mate and mine too much and they were pretty weak for "Vampires"
Also for a short story it repeated itself a lot, I don’t remember how many times we read about Riley’s family being slaughtered but after the first time I got it didn’t need to read it again, same with the story of the roses
This book pretty much falls into all the traps I generally don’t like about Siren Publishing novels. They’re erotica without much in the way of plot. It’s insta-love with over simplified ideas and not a lot of character development. That isn’t to say that I hated this book, because I didn’t. I actually liked Riley’s character a lot, but the writing and story are all very simplistic and while I liked the premise everything was a little too sunshine and puppies rather than really dealing with issues.
I LOVED that Riley didn’t take the easy way to become a doctor and instead went through things in the human world to learn more. He’s clearly a step further into the modern world than any of the rest of the vampires and of course a genius besides. I liked that he didn’t just cave to Micah because of the mate bond. He is his own man and not willing to give up on the things he’s worked so hard for just because he’s mated to one of the warriors of the great Marius family.
That being said…the dialogue in this story drove me nuts. Maybe it’s too many years as an actor where dialogue is everything, but I wanted to beat my head into a wall as the dialogue felt so stilted and not human. Not even that, it just didn’t feel like natural speech. Instead the speech was used to get a point across, but not in the most smooth natural delivery. I felt like I was getting an info dump all the time. I screwed up, yes you screwed up, here’s why you screwed up, I agree that’s why I screwed up, here’s how you fix it, yes that’s exactly what I should do to fix it. *headdesk*
I would have liked to see a little bit more development of the world around these characters. I get that the “demons” are vampires that have gone bad, but how does that happen, why? Why the attack now on a compound that’s never been breached? There were a lot of unanswered questions at the end of this even though Riley and Micah were all sunshine and puppies. And I do like them together once Micah pulled his head out of his ass. I don’t know that there’s enough in this story to drag me back for the sequel, but maybe. I’d give it 2.5 stars that I’d round up to 3 for GR.
Wow, that shit needed some serious editing. I mean serious editing. I liked the premise well enough but it just drove me nutty the entire time. Nothing seemed to flow and everything was sunshine and puppies. Even when it wasn't supposed to be. I think I'll pass on this series.
I enjoyed this book but would have liked it much more without the holes in the plot. They are easy to forvive as Ms. Flynn keeps the pace of the story moving quickly and keeps the story interesting. The other problem that I had with the book was how the conversations sometines became stilted and very formal. That is why it got only 3 stars. Micah Marius is a vampire warrior fighting the hoards of demons threatening the existense of the vampire race. Micah is badly injured and taken to the closest vampire hospital. Riley Johnson, a young, unconventional but brillant doctor, heals Micah. Micah sees Riley for the first time and knows he has found his destined mate. Micah kisses Riley thinking that Riley is a woman in has scrubs and surgical cap and his world ignites. Micah has finally found his true mate but his mate is a man and Micah is straight!
This book features one of the most stupid cases of insta-love I've ever encountered (and I've read a lot of m/m books) and the writing style was awful (FI 42 instances of "chuckled/chuckling").
I rate this book a 2.5. Sometimes a book can be overly sweet and emotional to the point of being cheesy. That's what happened with Micah (Marius Brothers book 1). The situation between alpha vampire Micah and his mate Riley made me laugh but not in a good way. Their dialogue made me cringe at times because it didn't sound right. I kept thinking people don't talk or interact with each other like this. It's bad, so bad that it's funny. Oh my goodness. I dare not read the next book in this series.
What if you met the perfect man of your dreams, and he kissed like a dream, only he turned out not to be so perfect after all? What if he turned out to be straight? What then? What if you met a beautiful woman, a woman you felt was destined to be your mate, only she wasn't. What if she was a he?
If its Micah and Riley, what happens is you work together, you work things out, you argue, you laugh, you cry, you compromise. You learn what love really is and what being mates really means.
I'm glad I took the chance of reading Joyee's book. I will definitely be reading more of them. As I suspected she might, she made me laugh, cry, get angry, and feel. Everything I look for in a romance novel was present.
I have to say that I really liked this. Micah was an ass at first, but then he became so sweet. LOVED Riley giving as good as he got. Oh buddy.
This reminded me a bit of the Demon Warriors series by Lynn Hagen, but with vamps. I really enjoyed it though and I will be continuing on right away with the rest of the series. I can not wait to read about the rest of the Warriors!
Oh and I can't wait til Riley tells the vamp docs to go take a hike. However, vamp docs don't know about human medicine? Really? Ummm...
This story was written most likely by a fanfiction writer. It started out pretty good with the fighting of demons and everything but as soon as Micah and Riley meet it all goes down hill from there. The writing style and point of view wasn't that great in all honestly and made me wish i hadn't spent the 3 dollars on it. I really liked the concept the author was trying to create but unfortunately the story fell short.
A lite read. It was fun and easy to read. There was a little too much repetition and it was a bit "shallow" as far as character development and plot but for a simple lite read it was good:)
I think this book is the start to a good series. I can see how many ways that the story can continue and expand. It had some action and family interactions. I loved the family interactions the best because they were both good and bad. They seemed more real because of that.
What I would have liked different about the book is to have it more fleshed out. I think it could have used more length and storyline for Micah and Riley. I also tended to get irritated with Micah. I won't say why. I don't think I would change that part though. It was kinda important to the storyline.
Overall, I am looking forward to more stories in the series. I am hoping that Riley appears in them also. I want to see what he comes up with in regards to his experiments.

I liked it. I was even surprised a couple of times about the plot/relationship but in a good way. Giving 4* but more like 4,5* because I'm not really a fan of 3rd person narrative, I definitely much more like 1st person narration. It didn't affect that much my enjoyment of this book tho. Riley and Micah were so sweet with each other, even if their beginning was a bit rocky. Micah actually surprised me the most in the whole book. Tough alpha-type warrior but in reality a big sweetheart/marshmallow.
Pairing ranking (I started doing this in other series, just for fun, but also if I wanted to read again or just remember what I read, which pair too my heart with them): 1. Riley & Micah
I gave it a three star rating because of repetition. That was honestly the only thing bothering me, the fact that the characters would share a story of how something came to be shortly after that something happened, this happened multiple times.
Liked: The (slight) twist on vampire lore and demons. Also the idea that Out of the two heros, I preferred Riley the most. Supporting family (Elena, Marian, etc) were kind and loving. A few awww moments between mates.
Disliked: Micah's insecurities. I understand it to a limit. I get that I could understand him wanting confirmation or reassurance a few times after being intimate. It started to linger, though, this insecurity. And when I was thinking: really? He was acting like Riley kicked his favourite puppy. Riley told him countless times with words and actions how much Micah meant to him, so the insecurity on Micah's part should have been dropped sooner than it was.
I'm all for men in touch with their emotions, not afraid to cry and whatnot, but it should be used sparingly for the most impact and emotional feels. Used too much to doesn't have the same impact.
Vampires being clueless about human technology, etc I find it hard to believe that vampires, though they keep their existence from humans, are so clueless about modern things such as grenades, MRIs and other technology. Some vampires are 100s of years old. Would they not interact with the world or at least learn things in those years? I mean, seriously. That was concept was pretty lame.
I read this book a few days ago and I have did so much studying and homework since then that I don't really remember much. But I like what I can remember so that's good. I liked the vampires, and the demons that were once vampires and I loved the idea of the Demon Hunters, maybe I have watched too much Supernatural. The characters were fine and I loved that each had their own super power, except that I found Micah's messy mind magic to be kind of... shit.
Micah is a vampire from one of the oldest vampire families around and is pretty much considered royalty for that. I found Micah could be very presumptuous and short tempered but, although I would normally hate this, I actually kind of liked it. I liked how he would get possessive and protective over Riley to the point that he would fight his own family to keep him safe. Riley is so sweet but he was always jump to conclusions and assume the worst. I loved his gift, it was one of my favourites and would have liked it to be talked about more. I would have preferred Stefan and Riley to fight longer because I love the tension and for some reason I love the arguing.
I liked the plot but, yet again, the same generic theme was used: mates fall in love, some tension, they get over, someone gets kidnapped or injured, they get over it. The characters were written well and I liked the background information. I wouldn't have changed much about the book but I would have liked the the arguing and fighting to carrying on for a bit longer in order to create the tension that I crave so much. I realise that this isn't as detailed as it should be but as I said, I've been really busy and seemed to have replaced the story with information from school.
Well now, I have read other works by this author so I knew this would be hot, what I didn't realise was that I would LOVE it!! What I love about it is she has taken all the best bits of the other vampire series out there and made this one her own. I see bits of Lara Adrian's and J R Ward's Vampire world view but the author goes one step further an makes Vampires in her world just like us in the way they live except they drink blood and of course all the neat stuff like speed and strength, they can go out in the day. This only changes if they go demon, then they become more like the vampire of traditional myth. This twist on the vampire myth rings all the right bells with me then add in the soul mate angle and I am in heaven. As an opener to a new series this was great, we got to meet lots of the main players and I liked that our hero was arrogant and a bit of ass to start with because it gave him a human side and he was what you would expect from an alpha male to whom people didn't say no. Add to that the fact he is a quick learner and you have the match to a fire that I hope will spread through all the books in this series, which I might add I now have to buy!!
Let me start by saying that I have already read the majority of the books in this series and was following it for a long time. I lost track of it and realized recently that I had about 4 new books in the Marius World Series to read. But it has been a long time since I read some of them, and I couldn't really remember much of the overarching plot. I also hadn't read much of the "Beyond the Marius Brothers" stories and never even added the ones I read onto Goodreads. I decided to take up the challenge of re-reading all the books (21 so far) in this series chronologically and writing a few thoughts on each. So I will set new dates to the "read date" section as I go along.
Micah has been my favorite of this series for awhile. I have read this book several times and I love it. I love Riley, Micah, their relationship. I think part of it is the set up to the Marius World that added to the draw I have to this book. I have it on my comfort reads list.
I still think this book deserves the 4 star rating I gave it earlier.
I love the twist of the 'traditional rules' in this book compared to ones I have previously read. It starts off with Micah, a vampire warrior, who after being injured is taken to an 'unconventional' (by vampire standards) doctor named Riley who unlike others learned to be a doctor by learning from human medicine.
At first sight Micah believes Riley is a woman, which I think is not a very good way to start a relationship. After this part I believe it just all happened too fast, Riley is in a coma for 5 weeks (no idea why that was added in), they admit they are in love with each other like five seconds after Riley wakes up and also as has become typical in M/M romance novels one of the main characters was strait at the start of the book, it also seems that Micah has little to no problem with it after about 10 minutes of knowing each other.
How ever I love the banter in the family and between Micah and Riley. I also love that Riley is what some may consider a mad scientist and develops those UV bullets.
I can not wait to read the rest of the series and see all more juicy scenes like the ones in this instalment.

It was very sweet ande really apparent how much in love the MCs were but it just wasn't enough. Not even the inclusions of a hospital scene like I crave could make me think this was very good. All conflict was resolved too easily. was a dick for about five minutes then extremely apologetic.
It was horribly sexist. No jobs were given for the women. They were all just included for the roles they play as moms and grandmas. While those are important and noble roles--and I certainly am proud of being both--women are more than that. When babies are mentioned ( the women are described as being the ones who will spoil the baby, not any males. The idiot person who was of course female.
The whole was just silly but at least he didn't feel well enough for sex at that point.
2.5 stars rounded up because I'm a sucker for a good OMG-he's-gonna-die scene.
I was a little worried about this book when I first started reading it because the vamp/demon thing has been done so often, but I was pleasantly surprised. The story is super sweet and the characters are great. Both Micah and Riley are insecure and that makes for some 'awww' moments. The secondary characters are wonderful and I think the series will be pretty good.
The issues I had with the story are not huge. First, I wish there was more description about their species and the world around them. Also, I wanted more from the characters, I got descriptions which makes me happy, but I wanted more time with them. The story spans a very short amount of time and I would have liked to have seen them go through more than a few weeks in their relationship. Lastly, it was strange seeing Micah as a big, strong warrior who was totally insecure. It was a jump that worked okay, but I think there needed to be a reason for his insecurities to explain how he went from confident to diffident.
What do you mean, "Micah's not a werewolf"? ... Really? ... Are you sure? ... Yeah, I picked up on that. It's kind of hard to miss when he reminisces on feeding. ... So, I just read the blurb wrong then? ... What. His name's Micah Marius? ... Seriously? Who the fuck comes up with names like this? It's like "Montgomery Montgomery," but without the irony.
I'm done with this conversation with myself thing. It fizzled and died and now it's pointless.
So, Flynn took a page from JR Ward with the Torhn thing. Just saying. Cuz H's make everything better, I guess?
It's...tensionless. It's got fight scenes, but there's no...sense of urgency? Suspense?
Eh. I dunno. I guess I don't really like Flynn's writing. It's very...elementary, I suppose.
