The first of a series of young adult novels, set in Oklahoma. Vampires, werewolves, and more!
"Ashe, no matter how hard he tried, couldn't produce a single scale, feather, talon or patch of fur."
In the paranormal community of Cloud Chief, Oklahoma, Ashe Evans is a failure. Born to a shapeshifting mother and a vampire father, he should be passing his Transformational Arts classes easily. Sadly, Ashe can't seem to become anything other than himself. Principal Billings, a werewolf, is threatening to send Ashe to a human school if he doesn't transform soon. Ashe's troubles are soon forgotten when a seventeen-year-old werewolf is found dead behind his rural home. Someone is killing those with ties to the human world and Ashe finds himself a target. Will he solve the mystery of the murders or will he become the killer's latest victim?
Bumble contains content that may be inappropriate for some young readers. It includes scientific references to reproduction, some violence and mature themes. Recommended for ages 14 and up.
Connie Suttle lives in Oklahoma with her husband and three cats.
Connie holds an MFA in Fine Art (film production and animation) and taught courses at the university level before moving on to bookstore management. Nowadays, if she isn't writing or editing, she's dreaming up her next book.
I originally came up with the idea for Ashe as I was writing something else. I wanted a nickname for a character, and it had to be either an insect or a tiny mammal. Enter the bumblebee bat, the tiniest mammal in existence. It was natural that a shapeshifting child came from that, and his alter ego might prove slightly embarrassing to his peers. Ashe is bigger than that, however, and learns that he's even more special than anyone imagines.
If you're a fan of author Connie Suttle'sBlood Destiny series, you're in for a delightful treat. She is set to release Bumble on February 1, 2012, the first book in a new series of young adult fantasy fiction called The Legend of the Ir'Indicti.
Bumble is set in rural western Oklahoma, in the experimental paranormal community of Cloud Chief, populated by werewolves, vampires, and shapeshifters. Ashe Evans, the 12-year-old-going-on-40 central character is facing all of the usual hardships of any soon-to-be teenager, complicated by the fact that he is unable to successfully shift into an animal form. Failing Transformational Arts, Ashe may be banished from the school the following year if he is unable to turn. The harder he tries to shift, the more impossible it becomes, and he is weighed down by the embarrassment and humiliation of being the only student at Cloud Chief Combined to fail.
Current events soon pull his attention away from his own struggles, however, as Ashe is immersed in a blooming cloud of intrigue that includes kidnapping, betrayal, and murder. Aided by his best friend, Salidar, and encouraged and supported by a close-knit group of schoolmates, Ashe is not only the key to solving the mysterious events, but the ultimate focus of their efforts, but for what reason he has no clue.
As often happens when your attention and efforts to accomplish something have failed, as soon as you stop trying so hard to make it happen, it seems to happen on its own. Such is what happens with Ashe. Once he stops trying to shapeshift and begins his investigation into the deathly events that have overtaken his family, friends, and town, his innate abilities begin to manifest themselves in ways that astound and thrill him. Being the mature young man he is, he engages those abilities immediately to help him try to solve the mysteries that have caused so much pain and suffering in his small community.
Ashe and company are a joy to meet! Their differences only serve to cement their love for each other as they band together to defend their family, friends and town from an encroaching evil they're only just beginning to understand. The personalities have depth and character, and the characters have personality! The story is exciting and maintains a gradually accelerating pace right to the end, at which point you'll be wishing you had the next book in the series, Shadowed, in hand already! (Don't worry; you won't have to wait long for it!) If you've gotten this far into my review then you must already be a fan of Connie Suttle's writing, just as I am. You'll be thoroughly entertained by the characters, story, dry humor, and writing style to which you've become accustomed with Connie's books.
Also, fans of the Blood Destiny series take heart; some of your favorite characters from that series make an appearance in Bumble as well!
Although designated as young adult literature, Bumble is also a wonderful book for readers of a more mature age. (No, I'm not telling you how old I am to prove the point, LOL.) Just trust me, if you love the characters in the Blood Destiny series (Lissa, particularly) you're going to love Ashe and his merry band as well, if not more so.
I look forward to reading your reviews of the book!
Talking to my daughter about things I didn't remember from the Blood Destiny series, after my cranial operation, I started reading the Blood Destiny series again. Not only was re-reading the series but we found a diagram of all the books that intertwine with the series, so we decided to read them according to the diagram, when we got to book 10, Blood Reunion, the diagram tells us to read Legend of the Ir'Indicti before continuing with the following books. I was a bit worried to see that it was a YA series, and therefore I would not like the plot, but I accept that I loved this first book Bumble, I loved Ashe, her character 12 years like 40. I was surprised to see how some characters from Blood Destiny are within the plot, this first book managed to get my attention, I will continue with the second book, to see what more surprises it will bring ... I think that despite being in my fifties I am young at heart ... lol
I honestly don't know how to rate the book. The plot is good, but I don't think it's executed as well as it could be. The characters are diverse and some are interesting. The conversations though... I just can't! They are so pointless at some times and really, whole pages could be cut from the book and it wouldn't have any effect on the story at all. Really, I don't care what kind of plants they were planting at work, what was for dinner and how often Ashe was told to go and do his homework. Not sure if I'll read the next one or not.
I am not one for reading a book or even a series where the main character starts at the age of 11, but this is the reading order on her web page and I read and loved her Blood Destiny series. I also believe this series so far should be after book 5, Blood Royal in her Blood Destiny series. This book had me just as hooked. A lot of the characters from Blood Destiny make appearances or get referred to in this one and it more rounds out these worlds. I continue on....
If you plan on reading Suttle's Blood Destiny series, this book starts after events in Blood Royal (Blood Destiny #6), so fair warning. This series also affects the later High Demon series, starting with Demon Lost, and is an essential part of of the God Wars series, starting with Blood Double, which is the latest series to be released. (May 2013)
I like that she changed it up and did a male main character this time too, especially one who doesn't bash on women... That was seriously starting to give me a complex and if the universe wasn't so expansive I probably would have stopped reading so much of it tbh.
The author was great when she came to my sons Creative Writing class it's all he talked about so I read the book. It's a easy read, smooth paced story. I enjoyed the supernatural aspect and the fact that she throws in a character of a White Buffalo which is a sacred Native American animal and the books based in Oklahoma. If you have teens or Tweens they will be able to identify with Ashe and his struggles to find acceptance, be brave, and stand by his convictions.
I really like Connie Suttle writing style so I gave this book a try. I was quite surprise that it interlaces with Blood Destiny (another Connie series) so much. If you're a fan of the other series I recommend this one.
It has been a couple of years since I've done a reread and I had an urge to read Connie's books for the 5+(+) time. Yes. Still a favorite series. This is young adult but it is a good story and a must read if you plan on reading all of the Lissaverse books.
A new series. This series is about Ashe, a child of a shifter and a vampire. The first book is about the community he lives in with other shifters, werewolves, and vampires. The community is hidden from humans. This is a solid start and nice set up for this series.
Fits like a jigsaw piece with many other Connie Suttle books.
This book explains Ashe's talents, and where his origins lie. It has many twists and turns which make it difficult to put down. Looking forward to the next book in the series.
Brilliant start to series - teen fiction but can appeal to all ages. Love the way all Connie's books and series overlap characters in places and interlink.
