About the author

Works, such as Antigone (1944), of French playwright Jean Anouilh juxtapose harsh reality and fantasy.

A Basque family bore Anouilh in Cérisole, a small village on the outskirts of Bordeaux. From his father, a tailor, Anouilh maintained that he inherited a dignity in conscientious craftsmanship. He may owe his artistic bent to his mother, a violinist, whose summer seasons in the casino orchestra in the nearby seaside resort of Arcachon supplemented the meager income of the family.

He attended école primaire supérieure and received his secondary education at the Collège Chaptal. Jean-Louis Barrault, a pupil at the same time and later a major director, recalls Anouilh as an intense, rather dandified figure, who hardly noticed a boy some two years younger. Anouilh enrolled as a law student in the University of Paris but after just eighteen months then found employment in the advertising industry and abandoned the course. He spoke more than once with wry approval of the lessons in the classical virtues of brevity and precision of language he learned while drafting copy.

He followed his first unsuccessful l’Hermine in 1929 with a string. He struggled through years of poverty and produced several dramas until he eventually wound as secretary to the great actor-director Louis Jouvet. He quickly discovered inability to get with this gruff man and left his company. During the Nazi occupation, Anouilh not openly took sides, but people often view his most famous publication. He criticizes collaboration with the Nazis in an allegorical manner. Mostly keeping aloof from politics, Anouilh also clashed with Charles de Gaulle in the 1950s.

In 1964, people made Becket ou l'honneur de Dieu (Becket or The Honor of God) into a successful film, starring Peter O'Toole and Richard Burton. Edward Anhalt adapted and won an Academy Award for his screen.

Anouilh grouped on the basis of dominant tone: "black" tragedies, dominant "pink," "brilliant" combined in aristocratic environments, "jarring" with bitter humor, "costumed" historical characters feature, "baroque," and my failures.

In 1970, the Prix mondial Cino Del Duca recognized him.

كان العالم كله "ميديا" ، لقد فقد نفسه فيها ، لقد أحبها وشاركها عالمها المُلطخ بالدماء ، الطاغي بجرأتها وتمردها وسعارها المتوحش...
إلى أن جاء يوم وكل منهما كان يؤلم الآخر ، تحوطهما دائرة مغلقة من الأكاذيب كما لو كانت تحرسهما ...فلم يبق سوى الكراهية.. ولكن حتى الكراهية قد ماتت..
ولكن المرء يحرص على الأشياء الميتة فيتعذب بها ..
عندما أراد أن ينفصل عنها ويلوذ بالنسيان ويعيش حياة نبيلة مسالمة..إذ بروح الثأر والانتقام تشتعل جذوتها بداخلها ، لم تكن تتصور أنه قد يعيش في عالم من دونها..
ولكن هل حقاً لم تكن "ميديا" إلا روح شريرة دنيئة ..أم ثمة "ميديا" بريئة طاهرة نقية ، صوتها اختنق وروحها تبددت في أغوار "ميديا" الأخرى ..؟؟
أما هو ..سيعيش ، ويتمكن من النسيان ، بل وسيجد له مكاناً يقف به وسط ظلمة هذا العالم منتظراً السكينة والسعادة....

This was so beautifully written, Medea's character is just incredible, I loved her monologues, I loved her exchanges with the other characters, they are all perfectly developped in a few lines. A brilliant story.

We know of Medea. We know she hates Jason, we know she kills their children to punish him for abandoning her. We know of her, we’ve seen her anger and her pride, we’ve seen Jason through her spurned eyes times and times again. She’s Amy Dunne, she’s an Old Testament figure, she rises and strikes and hates every time.

We don’t get to see Jason very often. Did he love her ? Why did he stay with a woman so inhuman for so long ? Was he always a coward, a weak traitor, a man exchanging an accomplice for a younger, more subdued girl lover ? Did he live the life with Medea until he could escape from their crimes and their hatred, absolved ? Gillian Flynn asks the questions. Jean Anouilh answers.

He paints their story in red and says it’s a love story as well as a story about hatred. Jason speaks to Medea, he speaks of having loved her, he speaks of their running away, how he lost himself in her harshness. His sadness, his confession, his saying that their brutal love was the only one he would ever know, it’s all a novelty. Medea’s tender, childlike cruelty, her refusal to be bound by love and her impossibility to let go feel just as new.

They were quietly damned together until Jason chose to be weak and at peace, far away from hideous love. It’s really, really subtle and beautiful, how the play conveys that they really were one, wrongly but truly. Once.

It’s a reflection about love, about love gone wrong, about love growing from bad places and rotting slowly away because of it.

It rings hauntingly and pitifully true.

”JASON goes to her, clings to her arms - (...) First, I loved like you love, Medea : through me. The world was Jason, the joy of Jason, his bravery and his strength - his hunger. And if we both had teeth, we would have to wait to see which one of us would get to devour the other... And then, one night, one night which seemed alike any other, you fell asleep at our table like a child, your head on my shoulder. And that night, that night that maybe had simply tired you because we had been travelling so long, I suddenly felt responsible for you. Only one minute before, I was still Jason and only my pleasure mattered in the world, my cruel pleasure. All you had to do was to go quiet, to let your head slowly fall on me and it was all over.... The others, they would keep laughing or talking around me but I had just left them. The young Jason was dead. I was your father and mother : I was the one carrying the frail, sleeping Medea in his arms. What were you dreaming about, in your mind, while I was made to care for you so ? I took you to our bed and looked on as you slept. The night was calm, we had managed to outrun your father’s armies for some time, my companions were guarding us with their weapons and yet, I couldn’t close my eyes. I watched over you, Medea - protected you from absolutely nothing - all night. And the world became Medea...”

إلي أي حد يمكن أن يضيق التعساء بالسعداء ؟ إلي أي حد لا يمكنهم سماع ولو ضحكة بسيطة تمر بالجوار ؟
وماذا لو كانت سعادتك بين يديك مثلهم، ويمكنك أن تلحق بهم .. أن تغير من مصيرك، أن تغير من قدرك التعس الذي اخترته بيديك .. هل يمكنك ان تغير هذا القطار الحزين الشقي، وتلحق بهؤلاء البسطاء السعداء، الذين ارتاح بالهم، فبعدوا عن خطايا العقل والجسد، ورضوا بالرضا والضحكات الصافية الخالية من الذنوب ؟

ولو استطعت فعلا أن تغير تلك التعاسة التي بدأت بالخطيئة، وبمغامرة لم تكن تعرف نهايتها، لو استطعت فعلا، هل سيتركك تهرب هؤلاء من شاركتهم الخطيئة ؟
هل سيتركونك تنظف قلبك وعقلك مما لحق بك من ذنوب، وخطايا ؟

متي يفهم شركاء الجريمة الواحدة أنهم لن يتحابوا أبدا، مهما مر الزمان ؟

Cette pièce a réussi à me réconcilier avec le genre du théâtre ! La plume d'Anouilh est aussi sublime que brusque, les personnages de Médée et Jason sont tout simplement envoûtants dans le déchirement de leur amour passé. J’ai aimé cette façon de reprendre cette histoire qui est un grand classique pour nous amener à nous questionner sur notre propre existence moderne.
Un très bon classique que je conseille !

خیلی مقاومت کردم تا مده رو قضاوت نکنمش!! اما سخت تر و پیچیده تر از موقعیت مده، موقعیت ژازون بود.. وقتی آخر ماجراهات به "درک" خیلی چیزا میرسی اونوقت تغییر مسیرت و آگاهی از اشتباهاتت کشنده ست.. ادامه دادن در این شرایط شهامت فوق العاده ای میخواد.. بیچاره ژازون

Sentiments partagés au sujet de cette Médée-là. Le texte est beau, et le personnage de Jason est super au moment où il est face à Médée. La vieille est touchante dans sa peur de mourir. Médée me convainc moins, elle n'a rien de nouveau, elle n'est pas expliquée comme l'est Jason. Les dernières répliques rattrapent la fin attendue du mythe, tout de même.

Dans la pièce de Médée se trouvent plusieurs confrontations.
La confrontation entre deux amants qui ne s'aiment plus, via le dialogue.
La confrontation entre le passé (Médée qui ne vit que par le passé et les souvenirs) et l'avenir (Jason qui se projette vers sa nouvelle vie, sa nouvelle femme).
La confrontation entre la vie et la mort (les jeunes enfants qui apportent le poison, l'énergie de Médée couplée à son désir de donner la mort, etc.)
La confrontation entre le quotidien et l'éternel (les discussions autour de la gloire, de l'amour éternel, des rois, se fait autour d'un "café", de la nécessité d'argent).

La pièce est écrite dans un style très clair, très agréable, et se lit sans peine

Résumé :
Médée et Jason sont mariés depuis 10 ans. Ensemble, ils ont eu 2 fils. Ils forment un couple infernal, qui tue, ment, et vole. Ils sont accompagnés par Mady BErry, la nourrice de Médée. Mais Jason est fatigué de cette vie de crimes. Il veut quitter Médéeet épouser la fille du roi Créon, Creuse. Il croit ainsi pouvoir vivre une vie plus calme.
Un garçon vient trouver Médée et la nourrice pour leur annoncer que Jason va épouser Créuse. Créon vient ensuite annoncer à Médée qu'elle doit s'exiler, sinon il la livrera aux fils de Pélias, roi qu'elle a tué. Créon apprend aussi à Médée qu'elle ne peut pas partir avec ses fils. Médée demande une nuit pour réfléchir, ce qui lui est octroyé. Jason apparaît et avoue à Médée qu'il ne l'aime plus. Il lui dit qu'il a maintenant pitié d'elle. Il s'agit d'une scène de confrontation entre les deux héros, qui évoquent leur confrontation, leur mariage. C'est une scène de rupture déchirante, que Médée refuse d'accepter.
Médée envoie ses enfants porter un cadeau de noces à la fille de Créon, un voile d'or et un diadème empoisonnés. Créuse et Créon meurent en les touchant. La population est en colère et vient taper contre la roulotte dans laquelle vit Médée. Celle-ci met le feu à sa roulotte et égorge ses enfants. Elle se tue ensuite. L'ordre est rétabli dans la ville de Corinthe

J'ai beaucoup, beaucoup, beaucoup aimé!

Cette version de Médée est plus douce, moins dans l'action. Il n'y a qu'un décor, que très peu de personnages. Tout est dans les mots, les échanges des personnages entre eux. On peut observer une discussion entre Médée et Jason, leurs vies avec et sans l'autre, comment cette relation a pu les influencer, ce qu'ils auraient changer, ce qu'ils regrettent etc.

C'est un échange très mature sur comment cet amour les a finalement détruit petit à petit, comment ils n'ont pas osé communiquer avec l'autre par fierté ou par vengeance.

Cette pièce n'a pas d'actes, pas de scènes. C'est un bout du temps qui file, qu'on observe, mais qu'on ne peut pas s’approprier.

Cette pièce de Jean Anouilh est la quatrième adaptation du mythe de Médée que je lis en quelques semaines, dans le cadre d'un cours de littérature comparée. C'est aussi l'interprétation du mythe qui m'a le moins plu jusque là : plus épurée, avec moins de personnages, cette pièce insiste sur la relation de couple brisé entre Jason et Médée, et la situation d'exilée de celle-ci. C'est intéressant en soi, mais je n'ai pas été totalement séduit. Peut-être aussi un peu de lassitude en lisant la même histoire plusieurs fois, même s'il y a toujours des interprétations différentes.

این چیزی که در آنوی ستایش می‌کنم، همان چیزی‌ست که «ادوارد مارش» در کتابش (Eurydice/که درباره آنوی است) نوشته است : «تئاتر این روزگار می‌خواهد در وضع انسان، در تمامی آن غور کند، و نمایشنامه‌نویس تصویری از خود، از مشکلات، امیدها و مبارزه‌هایش به انسان امروزی عرضه کند.».
آنوی دو جنگ جهانی را دیده است و قطعا این صلح‌طلبی و به دنبال آرامش بودنش را، متأثر از زندگی بی‌ثبات و پر خطرش می‌دانم؛ لذا نظریه‌ی «مرگ مؤلف»، از نظر من، تباه‌ترین نظریه است...

سرنوشت مده آ، شخصیت مصمم و قدرتمند زن در اساطیر یونان، تقریبن از جانب تمامی تراژدی نویسان باستان، و بسیاری در قرون بعدی، به شکلی بازنویسی شده. ترجمه ی دانمارکی مده آی ژان آنویی را این سال ها روی صحنه دیدم. به گمان من ترجمه ی فارسی به مراتب شیرین تر و گیراتر است، شاید هم به این دلیل که فارسی زبان مادری من است!
