Considering this is a WIP..... I don't think the story is complete... but it is for me.... cause I may be a SUCKA but I ain't no cliff hanger junkie!!!
Loves: MM Mafia The chase The give The pull The romance The charisma The guns... the caressing said face with a gun... so freaking HOTT The plot was good~
Not so much: the use of the word underboss.... ok ok I get it... he's the underboss... The fact that I totally forgot I had chicken on the BBQ to write this review :)
Update 10/29/15 I just finished reading the whole story in its entirety and I loved it. I hope to see a sequel in the future but I am content with how it ended.
12/9/12 I will love this even more when it's completely finished!! I hate starting WIP's, I have no patience for them.
Wow gosh, when was the last time I even looked at this story? At least a couple years by now. So I don't remember much about the plot or characters (I can't even remember if Afton was in college or not, let alone what he might have been going forart?), but I'm sure I'll eventually get back to this...one day.
I honestly don't know what to tell you about this one, guys... When I started reading the story, I was kinda doubtful if it's even gonna pick my interest, but behold, it did. Moving on. Almost every page rendered me hot and then cold and hot and the c- you know what? I honestly was not sure if it's worth to continue reading it. However, being the story-inhaler sucker I am, guess what? I did continue with the story. Because I'd be damned if I did not get to know how this will end and at the same time I ain't sucker enough to skip most of the story, so...I read on, not skipping a single page. In the end...the feeling from the story never changed. I'd even nickname it a "hot 'n cold" story. Towards the end, I gotta admit, it got almost absurdly...tangled ("almost" just because I cannot be sure whether it's regualar happening in mafia or not - since I never was a part of one) that the only saving grace out of it was a new character coming on screen, being the badass he is. All in all, though...no. Just no. Maybe it's because I'm not a big fan of machinations...maybe it was simply for the reason that the author's writing style did not "suck me in", hell, it might be the fact that sexual scenes were just a few, far between and only mediocre at that (oh, c'mon, if I cannot get my kicks anywhere else, at least this part should be good)...What I'm trying to say is, anyone who read Acid Town from Kyuugou can take some machinations and bad shit. But while in Acid Town it's easy to believe it's real, this story felt the exact opposite the more you read, the futher you got in the story, it got simply surreal. I could never get deep enough into the story to dodge the forementioned hot 'n cold feeling and it the end I honestly felt like a wrung out, unsatisfied (makes sense, I know) rag more than anything else.
P.S.: Since I am partially an artist, too, I was kinda sad that the photogallery that goes with this story has no links//photographer's name/ names of the people used as models for the main protagonists. I understand this is not quite an official "book". However, since it was released and there are obviously pictures that were used for better imagination, it's only fair and appropriate to give credit to people who enabled you to see the pictures in the first place (meaning: the person in the picture/photographer who made the picture). It just seems right to me, since a fanart from the very same gallery did not lack such description. Even if the photos were not actual models for the characters right from the start (meaning they were used only for the purpose of making it easier to imagine how the characters approximately looked like)... I think it's common decency to mention the source of the photos. That being said, I am not here to cry "burn the witch" - to the contrary, I am trying to make people realize that even "simple photos" took someone's time and effort to make, hence they should be credited accordingly.
It's not easy to write a story, especially a long one like this. I appreciated the effort and did stay until the end. Overall, I thought the plot and descriptions were implausible. A kid who's bright enough to get into Harvard but doesn't know his family—evidently his whole community—is in or connected to the mob? Unlikely. He wants to be an artist, but after one semester at school desperately misses everything he wanted to get away from and decides he wants to be a doctor after all? Even the escape to New York is unrealistic. He knows they're being hunted by the mob, who seem to have infinite resources, yet they pay for their hotel with a credit card? C'mon. The author just glosses over the inconsistencies, of which there are many, including Afton's coldness. He just accepts that the people around him are corrupt and killers, whereas a normal person would be running for the hills. There were so many things that didn't ring true; it's like the author somewhat knows how to weave a tale but not how to get into people's heads and emotions. There's not one single sympathetic or likable character, and none of them has any depth to speak of. But the story really goes off the deep end when the major plot twist is introduced, and the ending is pure fantasy. Mostly I felt disappointed by what could have been a compelling story in the hands of a more adept and insightful author.
Hmmm i actually dont know how to rate this as this not a completed novel. The thing that frustrated me about this book was the protagonist. He was just 17 yrs when we get to know him. Geez...he was very immature which is okay considering he is a teenager. His impulsiveness and stubborness was very annoying and i just didnt see how a mature man wanted a young immature boy. The whole underboss and boss thing got stale very quickly. And homophobia in the mafia is not accepted so him being gay and out was not believable. The novel needed alot of editing and should be cut down. It was too long and much of what was presented were not crucial to the story.
Currently a WIP that has the possibility of never being completed - so read at your own risk! Good so far: solid in all major matters that count (likeable characters, interesting plot, etc.) I hope it continues :)
While there were numerous grammatical and sentence structure errors, the story sucked me in. I fell in love with Afton and Lucian, and I'm intrigued by Marcus. I hope the author completes the story.
