Immortyl Revolution #2

Twilight of the Gods

Rate this book
Vampire lovers Mia and Kurt are on the run from their Forbidden Science rival Gaius Lupus.

After narrowly escaping the implosion of Genpath Laboratories, Immortyls Mia Disantini and Kurt Eisen go into hiding in a place they think is safe. All too soon they are discovered, and Kurt is captured by Gaius.

When he's rescued with the aid of feral child and teen vampires known as sewer rats, Mia witnesses first-hand the charismatic spell her lover casts over these would-be revolutionaries, who vow to join Kurt in his mission to bring down the house of Gaius.

Meeting obstacles to government funding to support the research that will one day allow them to walk in the sun, Kurt builds his forces. Mia navigates the minefield of rat politics, where she is distressed to be shunted into the background; viewed merely as an overly ambitious concubine who stands between the beloved "Loki" and his followers. One in particular-the oddly timid but beautiful Arturo, who threatens to sever the deep bond between Mia and Kurt.

Will Kurt and Mia defeat Gaius's brutal attacks and realize their dream of a cure for their condition? Will the new order they establish survive betrayal from within? And...will their love adapt to the challenge of a third partner?

I grew up in Western PA and attended Point Park College, where I majored in theatre. I've acted, directed, designed and written plays. For seven seasons I belonged to the Oberon Theatre Ensemble in NYC.

I'm the author of the Immortyl Revolution urban fantasy series, Cara Mia, Twilight of the Gods, My Fearful Symmetry and Servant of the Goddess. I've also written an anthology of shorts featuring my three main characters, Mia, Kurt and Cedric.

I live in Ohio with my husband and son. We have six pet parrots. Every summer, my family rides as many roller coasters as possible. Feel free to share your thoughts and favorite books with me. I love fantasy and historical fiction best, but I read all kinds of books.

Immortyls Mia Disantini and Kurt Eisen have escaped imprisonment at Genpath Laboratories and are now on the run from Gaius Lupus. While in hiding Gaius' people capture and torture Kurt. Mia enlists the help of an old friend and a pack of rats, vampires that were turned when they were young then cast aside when their masters no longer had use for them. After Kurt's rescue, the rats stand behind him and vow to help take down the evil Gaius. Mia and Kurt's bond is put to the test when Mia is shunned by the rats as nothing more than a concubine to their leader and Kurt takes in another lover. Arturo is simple minded and beautiful but he is a threat to their relationship. Mia and Kurt will have to maintain their bond if they are to survive the looming war and hope to see their dream of finding a cure for their condition.

Mia is still very much the focal point in this book as she was in the first. She becomes an even stronger character by taking on more responsibility in this book and refusing to be seen as just a sex object. She learns to fight and take care of younger vampires who were once slaves. Even though Mia still loses her temper at the drop of a hat, she is able to tolerate a lot in the name of the greater good and she really shows this when Kurt wants to bring another into their bed. While Kurt was being held by Gaius, Arturo saved him and they formed a blood bond. Kurt being the caring man he is couldn't just toss him aside when he is saved especially since Arturo has the mind of a child. Kurt doesn't want to hurt Mia and truly loves her above all but he cannot stop having feelings for Arturo because of the bond they now share. There is an uneasy truce between the three and I commend Mia for being a strong enough woman to see her acceptance as a way to make Kurt stronger in the eyes of the rats. I sure the heck wouldn't stand for my mate to take a boyfriend.

Kurt is given the name Loki by the rats and they consider him to be the one prophesied to save them. They rally behind him and he becomes a worthy leader. He puts everything into his new position and does all he can to change things and take down the vile Gaius who has spent centuries hurting the weak. I liked Kurt in the first book and while I still enjoyed him a lot in this one, I wanted to strangle him at times. Mia is no saint and strayed with another but he actually brought another into their home and almost expected her to accept his new lover. His ego also went a bit over board at times because the power he was given over the rats. Of course Mia was there to keep him in check. Both characters had their faults but in the end they are two very well written characters who I look forward to reading more about.

Along with the war against Gaius, Mia and Kurt are working with the government and Leisha. You meet Leisha in the first book when she is turned by Mia's maker Ethan. Leisha cannot be trusted but she is their only option. Gaius is working on a way to make vampires without any weaknesses by using science which is forbidden among the Immortyls. Mia stole his work and is trusting Leisha to help find a cure so she and Kurt can one day be mortal. I have a feeling it will not be that simple and Leisha has something planned that will only cause more trouble for the two.

Twilight of the Gods moves at a faster pace than the first book and while there are a few different events happening I felt the main focus was on Mia and Kurt's relationship. The arrival of Arturo and the way Mia is treated by the rats really puts their relationship to the test. I think they are a really great couple who are what the other person needs. Denise Verrico did a great job toying with my emotions. Another thing I liked about this book is the vampires themselves. The classes, laws and hierarchy of vampires is interesting and the use of science adds a nice twist to things. I feel the same way I felt about this book as I did when I finished Cara Mia. I'm looking forward to the one.

Starting off just after we left off in Cara Mia (book one), Mia and Kurt are in hiding having escaped from Genpath Laboratories. We see a return of some characters we met in book one, Mia and Kurt obviously, as well as Gaius and Leisha, and a few more. The war is still going on. Gaius wants to create Weakness-free Imortyls and Mia and Kurt have to work toward stopping Gaius and finding their elusive cure.

While this is all happening, I felt the bulk of the story surrounded the strained relationship between Kurt and Mia. In the previous book there was an utter love and devotion between the two. In this book it seems, that though there is still true love there, the honeymoon phase has definitely ended.

After a fast paced intro, Kurt is captured and taken by Gaius. Mia has to turn to the rats (vagabond street-rat vampires) to rescue him.

During his capture and rescue, Kurt bonds with Arturo, who is very mentally child-like. Once safe, Kurt takes a place as leader of the rats, being dubbed Loki. Arturo stands at his side as mate. On top of being shoved to the side, Mia is treated as if she is no better than a hooker, Kurt’s sexual plaything. The rats have absolutely no respect for her. Kurt, by the way still loves Mia just as much as ever, but he cannot leave Arturo which puts serious strain on his relationship with Mia. Think about it, would you agree to share your boyfriend with another man?

Obviously Mia has quite a bit to overcome in this book and it’s quite interesting to see her character further develop and deal with these hardships.

This book is very emotional charged and a fast paced read. A great companion and just as enjoyable as her first offering, Cara Mia.

Second in the series of the Immortyl Revolution and no less powerful. This novel is fast paced and exciting. On so many occasions I wanted to read this straight through, but was impacted by life. You know a good book though, when you feel it staring at you almost demanding that it be read and finished. This was the case with Twilight of the Gods. Once you picked the book back up the reader slips into it like a second skin. The characters are so well developed, the world is so well structured that you know exactly where you left off.

Kurt took on a new face in this book, no longer the mere slip of a boy (if you can say that about a vampire), he took on the manly qualities that elevated him. I was a little disappointed in Mia this round because she didn’t seem to know where she fit in, but honestly in reflection, the lead role was stolen from her by Kurt, and so it was an adjustment for all of us. Kurt really stole the picture and I was happy when Mia put her foot down with the decision not to get lost in the shuffle. Verrico wove quite a web with this tale of romance, lust, politics, and action. I can’t wait for the next one – and I’ll make sure I clear my calendar for the reading of that book.

I give this 4.5″ of fang

Twilight of the Gods starts off pretty much where the first book, Cara Mia, ended. Mia and Kurt have escaped and are still searching for a cure. However, they soon find that they are being pursued and that their freedom may not last.

An interesting twist is the introduction of a group of young vampires calling themselves rats. Without giving too much away of the plot, there is a twist in the dynamics between the independent Mia and her lover Kurt which pushes their relationship to the limits. Both characters grow and develop, although some of their personality changes are not for the better. It is the emotional development and relationship between Kurt and Mia which makes this book special.

Also, it was very enjoyable to watch Mia's character become mentally and emotionally stronger and continue to fight for her independence. She proves to be an excellent character; not too perfect as many are portrayed, but with realistic faults tempered by her many strengths.

This book is fast-paced, well-written, and a wonderful encompassing read.

Mia and Kurt's adventures continue in Twilight of the Gods, the second book of the Immortyl Revolution series. Both vampires have escaped the lab and are on the run from their enemy. They've enlisted the help of rats to help them take down Gaius Lupin. Mia and Kurt are still madly in love with each other but now Kurt has a new lover, a guy named Arturo.

Both main characters grow and become stronger in this book while their relationship is pushed to its limits.

The new characters introduced are well written and the author gives us many details throughout the book.

Since Twilight of the Gods starts where the first one ended, I'd recommend you read the books in order. This second book in a series is even more fast-paced than the first one. There's a lot more action and we get to learn even more about the wonderful world of Immortyls. A must-read series!

If you're looking for something different in your vampire books then this is a good place to start. Denise Verrico spins an original tale on vampires...something unexpected and exciting!

She has attention to detail and creates interesting multi-dimensional characters in her stories. Both Mia and Kurt are wonderful characters who make you want to root for them as they find their way through the many tials they have to face.

There are twists and turns, love, and unexpected events that keep you on your toes and keep you entertained. I enjoyed it!
