What do you do when the pouring rain stops? You run outside to play in the mud of course! Kimberley Knutson captures muddy play with childlike glee in MUDDIGUSH. The depicts a child and his friends splashing and stomping, making mud pies, and creating a river. The imagination and awesome dirt filled fun is captured in her creative collage illustrations and in her rhythmic, joyful text. Together the friends "Smucky mush! Smacky mush! Squooshy slooshy muddigush!" until the end of the day when the sun dries up the wet muck and the boy heads home to wash it away.
Great examples of onomatopoeias and alliterations. As you read the book you can feel the mud swishing through your toes. Beautiful silk screen and mono prints creates a collage effect that bring the book to life.
Probably my favorite part of the book is mid-way through when the children are creating a new world in the mud: "mountains to build, new rivers to dig...", because it shows the engineering design and construction that can happen during play. I also liked all the onomatopoeia used.
A small child quickly dresses in rain gear and rushes outside to play in the mud. Before long, two friends join in. They splash and stomp and begin to chant. “Skoosh slush, goosh gush, icky sticky muddigush!”
