Star Runner #2

Midnight's Shadow

Rate this book
It’s been months since the traumatic and life-altering events on Sulis. Wallace hasn’t been the same and Taran has spent her nights in an empty bed. When a stranger offers her the opportunity to pilot the extraordinary Spyridon—Taran refuses. There’s too much emotional turmoil in her life right now and the less complications, the better.

But Wallace has other ideas and seizes the opportunity without her knowledge. He deliberately sacrifices the one thing Taran loves unconditionally—Eidolon.

Now Taran finds herself captain of a starship that legend paints as haunted. Nothing is as it seems on a ship that appears to have a mind of its own. Forced to accept the consequences before her, Taran will have to put her faith in a man she doesn’t trust as she tries to win back the love of the man she does.

A native Virginian, Sara sold her first published romance novel, FLASH OF DARK, an urban fantasy romance pitting vampires against the Fae, in 2009. Since that fateful day, she's published over 20 books in various sub-genres of romance, been generously honored with several awards, and saved the world from evil chocolate chip cookies.

Though she may insist otherwise, Sara loves the places her mind conjures and has always been fascinated by the strange, the unusual, the twisted and the lost (tortured heroes are her personal favorite). She is an action movie junkie, addicted to coffee and has been known to stay up until the wee hours of the morning playing RPG video games. Despite all this geekiness, she is a romantic at heart and is always a sucker for an excellent love story.

What worked for me:
* I do love a tortured hero *swoon* Wallace is really struggling from the events in Midnight's Ghost, and it was very enjoyable to watch him and Taran reconnect, albeit slowly.

* The sexual tension and explosive couplings that were so wonderful in Midnight's Ghost are still present in this newest addition to the series.

* I'm so glad that Kerr is back. I want Kerr to have his own book. Srsly. I will preorder it right now lol

* I like this cover better (don't y'all scoff -- a good cover is important!)

What didn't work for me:
* I don't normally read a series unless there are three or four stories in the series already, and this book reminded me of why; while the main "conflict" was resolved, certainly, the larger story arc is nowhere near completed and left me anxious for more.

* Wallace is STILL keeping secrets from Taran, even at the end, and that makes me want to pimp-slap him. If they're going to have any sort of real relationship outside of their scorching sexual attraction, he's going to have to start keeping her in the loop

* The visions on the ship were never actually explained, and I felt a bit cheated at that.

So. My rating? 4 1/2 Stars, and only because I'm grumpy that there's not another one out yet :P

Talan and Reece

To begin with, the narrative lacks any meaningful events or a discernible plot.

For me, this central question arises: why do Talan and Reece remain in a relationship? It was already sketchy with the age difference when they started dating, and she was a minor. It is further complicated by the glaring disrespect Reece exhibits for Talan.

Reece tells Talan nothing. Even if it is something she should know - repeatedly. Plus, he lies and makes up stories to manipulate her into taking jobs she does not want to take. Astonishingly, Talan seems to readily forgive these transgressions, even acknowledging that more instances of such behavior are anticipated in the future. What!?!?

Venturing into spoiler territory, Talan has a profound love for her ship, a sentiment well-established in the narrative. This fact is callously disregarded when Reece decides to sell the ship without consulting her or exploring alternative solutions. Strikingly, Talan almost immediately forgives Reece, asserting that he made the right call. Are you kidding me?

Sale her ship, keep information from her, and mislead her at every turn. Even going as far as to make her feel small when she tales him something he knows is right.

Someone needs to be dumped. Like this series.
