Full of surprising and practical information about herbs, flowers, and spices, and how they can be used for health and home! Also presented in a way that we all learned and can refer back to it in the future!
This is absolutely awesome. I haven't read the whole thing yet - but am looking forward to working through it with my son - and can already tell that this is going to be a great resource book for my son as we explore our herbal companions. Also for me when I am working with young people. The information is good, clear, and concise, and it is peppered with facts and stories that make the herbalism fun and accessible.
As another reviewer says, "a little too woo for me." Too much magical thinking, not enough respect for science. Eat black pepper for a cough? I guess I'll try it, but it seems to me I'd have heard of that tip before if it were valid.
I really appreciated this book, but it felt like while much of the language was catered to younger kids, the activities seemed like they were more for older kids. But I loved the anecdotes, the stories, the songs, the activities. Like no other herb book I have. Cute.
Excellent book! Full of "the secret gifts of herbs," recipes for treating illnesses, making treats, tinctures, designing a kid's herb garden. Each herb has a story, bits of info, and all kinds of projects and recipes - from a "fairy bandage" (Plantain) to herbal washes, poultices, "mullein swords", candles - so much more.
I think I saw this on Angry Chickens blog. I thought it might be a little too kid-oriented, but it is fantastic. I love the way it is laid out (lots of activities with a focus on one herb at a time), I love the songs, I love the recipes - it just seems like a really good book for someone who has been interested in using herb but does not know where to start.
This is a lovely book to introduce children to the world of herb gardening. Even though this book is written for a young audience, it is a good read for adults as well. There is a lot of good information in this book for a beginning herb gardener. This is a must have book!
I'm so glad that I purchased this book... it will be an excellent book to share in the coming years with my son... We love the herb garden portion of our garden, and thanks to this book, we can't wait to plant a few new herbs in order to make some of the recipes featured in the book!
So, I read some book like this in grade 6. We all got in trouble (a warning from the principal?!) for taking this and another kids' book on witchcraft out of the school library. Like, maybe don't have books in the (public school) library that you don't want kids to borrow? -_-'
