Very sexy read! The writing is sensual and sexy and I loved it even though I wouldn't want to do most of the things the characters do! It has an upbeat tone and great chemistry with the characters. I'm sure I'll be reading this one more than once!
Mary is a devotee and Madden's descriptions of her desires and feelings are astoundingly accurate.
Here is a brief excerpt: "I have a thing. A bad thing. A perverted thing. A heart-stopping, lust-inducing, bad, secret, kinky thing. A thing for boys who can't walk. And, no, I have no idea why. Of course, I've tried to work it out. Of course, I've got nowhere...But I guess it's always this way with things like this, isn't it? I mean, your body doesn't do 'why?' does it? Your blood doesn't explain why it pumps the way it does. Your heart doesn't tell you why it beats faster. Your tissue, your bones, they're not going to scribble you a quick enlightening Post-It about why certain strange things equal certain strange feelings...I guess what I really think is that-- for me-- if you can explain exactly why something turns you on, pinpoint some life- and lust-changing event that skewed your sexuality one way or another...then it really can't turn you on all that much, not if you can analyze it in a clear-headed way like that. It can't be getting to you in a proper, deep, right-there-in-the-bone-marrow kind of way. Well, that's my theory. So don't expect too much in the way of cold hard reductionism about exactly why I like boys in wheelchairs. I just do. Like some people like firefighters and some (rather more dubious people) like choirboys."
Good, strong, solid writing and characters that absolutely shine. I highly recommend this book.
Okay. Not my usual genre. Halfway through this book I almost quit reading it because I didn't see how this relationship could possibly work and I didn't want to be around to see the fallout. Being the stubborn person that I am I kept with it for better or worse. I'm glad I did. I think this is a very well written story about a devotee w/strong S&M tendencies and her perfect victim with an HEA. I just couldn't stop reading this book and I highly recommend it to those who are curious about stuff.
I read this book a long time ago, but it's rare to find a good book on this topic, so it's worth a review. Equal Opportunities is super hot erotica including realistic, smart, sex-positive portrayal of BDSM, kink, and disability. The writing style is snappy and breezy, fun to read.
I think Megan Hart has spoiled me. While the characters were definitely interesting and amusing, the writing was definitely not on the same level as her books.
Even though I'd been warned about the S&M aspect, it still caught me a little off guard, lol. It definitely was . . . different.
It wasn't a bad book and one I enjoyed reading, but it doesn't do too much to elevate the genre (lol, I know, I know).
Even though the book is told from alternating perspectives, it definitely feels much more like David's story than Mary's - David really does change (although it kind of pains me that he has to TELL me that he's changed - several times). Mary does, a little, supposedly, but -- eh.
I guess what do I expect? If you're a fan of erotica, and dont' have too high of standards, and/or you're looking for a romance/erotica involving a male para then you will definitely enjoy this book. But if you want a little more from your "mommy porn" then you might want to try Megan Hart instead - I'd recommend starting with "Broken" - which actually does a great job of creating two distinct dynamic characters through one POV as well as having well written sex scenes.
Superbly written, incredible characterization. Madden helps you to get inside the heads of her characters and understand deviant fetishism.
I was re-reading and thought this part was genius: “ I guess what I really think is that – for me – if you can explain exactly why something turns you on, pinpoint some life- and lust-changing event that skewed your sexuality one way or another (like some foot fetishist who was once made to shine shoes as a child by a domineering stepmother), then it really can’t turn you on all that much, not if you can analyse it in a clear-headed way like that. It can’t be getting to you in a proper, deep, right-there-in-the-bone-marrow kind of a way.” 😌

I enjoyed this book for a couple of reasons. One is the writing, which is fun and engaging. The dry humour had me chuckling to myself during the first part of the book.
On a more serious note, it brings up an important question: If no harm is done and two consenting adults participate, why are certain things/behaviours perceived as "wrong"?
Maybe not everybody's cup of tea, but I loved the fact that, in a way, this book promoted the "live and let live" philosophy.
