Heather Amery was born and brought up in Bath, Somerset. Heather has written over a hundred books for children, including alphabet books, science and history books, craft books, classical fairy tales, a series for beginner readers called Farmyard Tales, Usborne Bible Tales, and Greek Myths.
These books are for early readers but can be kinda boring. It's good for when I'm busy and I can ask my six year old to read to my three year old. When repeat reading myself, I like to change the story or the names of the characters slightly just to keep the kids on their toes and they think it's the funniest thing. For example, the farmer's name is Mrs. Boot and every time I read a different book from the series, I change her name to Mrs. Sandal, Mrs. Snowshoe, Mrs. Stiletto, Mrs. Gumboots, Mrs. Wellingtons (you get the drift) and the kids think it's a hoot.
I picked this up at a secondhand bookshop for my son, who loves vehicles. I wasn't familiar with the Farmyard Tales (apparently there are 20!) or the style of this series (each page has two reading levels, one for beginners and one for more advanced readers). I had a book of tales with Stephen Cartwright illustrations as a child and love his style. The story was engaging, as the children on the farm watch Ted's tractor go off course and land in the pond, then Farmer Dray brings his horse to pull it out. Cartwright's illustrations were a perfect accompaniment to this little story.
Every page has a short blurb on the top (apparently for the child to read) and more writing above. It's easy to miss what's on top as you turn pages because you're looking to read and out of habit you'll look for the text at the bottom of the page when you're turning the page.
Kids can easily quip in as you read - so I don't understand the need for 2 levels of writing - especially when both the sentences have similar words.
The plot also needs a lot of work. It's not clever.
Elementary story about an accident with a tractor. Not very engaging. The text is dull and I don't like the font used. The illustrations are okay. There is a little yellow duck to find on every page.
I love using these books in story time because the story line is simple and the illustrations are engaging. And who doesn't like finding the yellow duck.
