The book is a light story whose main character is an artist who, under unfortunate circumstances, becomes a forger. The plot is fine, but the intro went too long for the description and what really meant, while other parts were less developed than they should have been. The idea was fine for its time and even nowadays if read with that perspective, but the hook that catches the reader only comes after a few chapters ahead.

I picked up this book from the Friends of the Library bag sale because I was an aspiring contestant for a TV game show of the same name, and I couldn't resist. After a few years, I finally got around to reading it, and I was disappointed.

From the blurb, this book was supposed to be both romantic and suspenseful, yet it was neither.
"An unconventional novel of suspense about a young man left penniless and stateless by war to become an adventurer and survive by his wits and charms." and "an intriguing renegade - a daring and resourceful adventurer who commands your admiration as the hunt ranges from Austria and Paris and Florence and the Tuscan countryside, and builds to a startling climax!" --> Don't believe this. It was not exciting, it was not suspenseful, and if there was a climax, it wasn't startling. It was so boring I could only read in 10-20 page chunks daily. It shouldn't take almost 2 weeks to get through a 214 page novel.

Some interesting facts:
The novel was first published in Germany under the title "Cassia und der Abenteurer" (Cassia and the Adventurer) in 1955. It was published in Great Britain under the title "Cassia" in 1955, and in the US under the title "Jeopardy" in 1956.
The novel was translated by Cressida Ridley.
My book has "Book Club Edition" stamped on the inner flap. Was this marketed to be read by book clubs?
