Demon's Fall

Rate this book
She was an angel at the gates of Hell.

When Kenan, an incubus, finds a caged angel for sale in the Hellsgate marketplace, he sees her as a challenge. Certain that his skills in seduction will work as well on a heavenly creature as they do on mortal women, he buys Jahel, intent on having her soul as a novelty in his collection.

Knowing he must gain Jahel's trust if she is to come to his bed willingly, Kenan treats her more as his guest than as his slave. When she reveals what brought her to the mouth of Hell in the first place—retrieving the soul of a young girl she was guarding—he even offers to help her complete her mission.

Though he has promised Jahel freedom, Kenan soon realizes she has captured his heart instead. And as their passion for one another grows, they find themselves caught in a struggle between Heaven and Hell, one that will lead them to the very edge of the apocalypse...

Going in to this short read you would think it would be pretty identical to other storylines of angels and demons. After reading this you would be thinking differently to the way the author has tackled this narrative.

Warning spoilers are beyond this point.

Jahel is an angel and is captured as she was trying to find her charges soul in Hellsgate. She feels responsible for her charge being led astray. She is not only angelic but has a lethal and deadly weapon on her person at all times. Her Voice.
description

Kenan is an incubus demon. He uses his skills of seduction to gain control of souls, which turn into coins and becomes his means of currency. Once he sees Jahel he immediately wants to add her to his collection.
His seduction begins with agreeing to help her find her charge.

Some pretty hot scenes were included in this short novel. Some involving Kenan seducing a wicked queen, to gain her soul, in front of Jahel…and some hot and heavy parts with Jahel. Damn!

Yes there is all this smuttiness going on but I am glad this short novel does focus on other aspects involved in issues occurring for both Hellsgate and Heavensgate. There is a deeper conspiracy running amok and it will impact both sides. Can angels and demons work side by side?

I love the writing in this read by the author. They way this is written is very poignant and mellifluous.

A beautiful read in all honestly but of course it was too short. I would have loved to see more background to Kenan and Jahel’s relationship. Starting at the beginning with Jahel’s reaction being more to what a normal person would be thinking when brought into a strangers home. I loved the action in this but I also wished I could read more. Other than this, I liked this sweet, steamy and short read.

I personally give it a 3 ½ star rating.

My favourite part in the novel was the ending and how its meaning was written in such a beautiful, beautiful way.
Then she took his hand and they began to walk out of Heavensgate. A feather fluttered in the breeze, and fell. Then another, and more, until they left behind them a soft white trail that once had been her wings.

I picked this for, you guessed it - a challenge! HOWEVER, it was WAY too short :(

Demon's Fall was a super quick audio that was filled with some short stories about a, you guessed it - an angel and a demon. In it, you will meet Kenan and Jahel. Interesting names and they are pretty interesting characters. Kenan buys Jahel, because she's a caged animal. I mean angel. Instead of treating her as a slave, he ends up falling for her.

Color me shocked people. Now it's not just him falling for her, nope - they fall for each other. Rather quickly if you ask me, but since it was a super quick book - it was bound to happen. They were okay and so was this book, I just wished it was a bit longer.

The world-building is fascinating. Demons seduce or trick or steal souls from humans, which solidify as coins, the person's face on one side and true name on the other. The coins are used as currency. Angels protect humans but only take souls at death. If humans avoid either fate, and possibly also because of moral implications (unclear), they can choose the Third Way, where demons and angels are not allowed to go.

Incubus Kenan discovers an angel locked in a cage and buys her. She's come to Hellsgate to try to retrieve the soul of her charge from a hellhound. Kenan wants her soul -- the soul of angel is a challenge. Their attempts to find the hellhound and bargain for the human's soul become entangled with a conspiracy to start the Apocalypse.

The romance is nice, and there's some nice evasion of/turnabout of the usual tropes of angelic innocence (the angel Jahel is curious about sex, enjoys it, feels no bodily or moral shame about it). I wish it had been longer -- the relationship arc feels complete, but I would have wished for more distrustful attraction in the beginning, just because I like that kind of thing. More objectively, the bigger conspiracy plot feels shoehorned in and rushed -- it should have been expanded or left out.

Review provided by Black Lagoon Reviews:

Demon's Fall is a novella and ended up being quite a quick read. Yet, despite it's minimal size this story was packed with multiple plot lines, interesting characters and creatures as well as lots of action.

The main characters, Keenan and Jahel, were interesting from the start. Keenan is an incubus and Jahel an angel caught and sold as a slave in Hellsgate, a place were mortals and demons mix. Keenan is something of a scoundrel and there's a charm to him that I really loved. While his original intentions are untoward- getting Jahel to give him her soul- he quickly becomes infatuated with the enigmatic 'gutter-wing'. Jahel however, was something of a question mark for me. We never really get a good look at her personality, in fact she's more aloof then anything making her feel under developed and leaving me not really caring about her one way or another. There was just no spark in her character unlike with Keenan. However, I did enjoy the romance between them. Often times it was sultry and yet more often then not it was simply sweet proving to be more a way of developing Keenan's character farther from demon into something more-hints the title 'demon's fall'. Often enough this is shown through references as to how he no longer seems to be as demonic as he was prior to his meeting Jahel and his lesser reactions to things such as holy water.

By far, however, was my enjoyment of the varying story lines from a dark re-telling of the famous Snow White to the awakening of one of the Four Horsemen to herald in the end of the world. While all of these aspects added to the action of the story, I think the fact that this was a novella detracted from the force of them. It would have been wonderful to see all the plot lines fully developed and explored a bit more rather then having them glossed over briefly. In truth, with all the plots going separate ways it was a bit much for such a short tale. It would have proved more useful to choose one thread and explore it. For example using the length of the novella to explore the Snow White aspect and allowing the development of the world and of the characters to truly blossom.

The world itself is interesting as are the creatures that reside within it. By far my favorites being Edom and Lilith. While they only appear briefly they really captured me and I would love to see more of them. The time this world takes place in seems to be a mash of time lines giving it an almost historical feeling that I really enjoyed reading as well. It fit in nicely with the plot lines as well as a setting for a demonic marketplace. The locales are likewise appealing. We spend most of the novel exploring Hellsgate and all it's varying enterprises but there is also a Heavensgate, these settings being mirror images of each other and equally fascinating for the reader to explore though we don't spend much time in the latter. All of these aspects, however, only added to my sadness to see this cast as a novella.

Overall this was an interesting read but it was by no means un-flawed and certainly isn't for younger readers as it is at times graphic. This is definitely a world I would love to see further developed and explored by the author on a bit larger, or should I say longer, scale. Truly the potential here is wonderful but I was left feeling that it was unrealized.

Demon’s Fall is an interesting combination of a fairy tale, dark fantasy and biblical myths. I thought this really added to an atmospheric tone that was both haunting and memorable and these elements gave this a unique take on the setting. However I do wish the novella was longer because I felt it was too short and because the world-building was established and well thought out with these combined elements, there was definitely growth to explore the setting and expand the characterisations especially suffered.
Kenan who is an incubus living in Hellsgate, which is a domain that borders heaven and hell, was more fleshed out and developed than Jahelthe enslaved angel. As the story is narrated in his POV there was more time developing his character and even though he was a demon, he never really appeared cruel or even morally dark. I actually liked the ambiguousness of the characters who lived in Hellsgate and like Kenan they actually felt more human than demon. Although Kenan bartered and tricked humans to sell their souls to him, there was no sense of him being evil so his strong attraction and feelings for Jahel was believable and sweet.

I wished Jahel was more developed and that we had more of an insight from her POV, I found that she was two dimensional, just too perfect at times. Her feelings for Kenan and trust for him was also too fast and convenient but then this was a novella and there was not much time to expand on this. But I did find she quickly trusted a being who was seen to be a traditional foe who sets out to tempt and steal the souls of her charges that she is entrusted to protect.

However i do have to say the romance between Kenan and Jahel was sensual and sweet and it was a highlight of the book, and I liked how that developed and evolved throughout the book and the love scenes added to that. Although when Kenan calls Jahel a “gutterwing” during one love scene which is his nickname for her in the midst of lovemaking was off-putting and threw me off the scene.

The strong point of the book, is the side plot that explains why Jahel was captured and enslaved and made for a great action-packed ending. The elements that make up the different subgenres such as the fairytale of rescuing a lost Princess, the fantasy setting and the biblical myths such as the four horsemen of the apocalypse combined to a climatic and exciting ending I really hope there is more about this world because i immensely enjoyed this aspect of the story.

The final scene of this book is my favourite - I wont spoil it but I love the image that is conveyed. Although Demon’s Fall has its flaws, it is a quick, imaginative and sexy read, with a fantastic setting and premise. I would definitely read more books set in this world and I look forward to what Karalynn Lee offers next!

It has been ages, but you might remember that I’m taking part in the Horns and Halos Reading Challenge hosted by Aimee of my fluttering heart. I went fairly angel-happy at the start of the year. Then my interest tapered off, and I went the route of straight fantasy, zombies, and all that other stuff (fairy tales, anyone?). I am determined to finish strong, so when I had the chance to request a copy of Karalynn Lee’s Demon’s Fall from the NetGalley catalog, I took it.

Just in case you didn’t catch it in the summary, this is a ROMANCE NOVEL. Adult-level reading. Very scandalous. Well, a story about an angel and a demon falling in love was going to be scandalous anyway…but let’s times that factor by about a hundred for the ess-eee-ex, okay? Okay. If you’re not into it, no worries. But the story’s good. Serious.

Kenan is a demon with a lot of allure. Jahel is a caged angel. They meet in a marketplace in Hellsgate, which is just what it sounds like – a city on the edge of the gate of Hell. Kenan has his own reasons for buying Jahel, but the main plot follows their adventures trying to fulfill Jahel’s quest. And that quest…is surprisingly familiar. Throw in a little bit of the fairy tale of Snow White, some of the Biblical apocalypse, and you have our story. Perhaps surprisingly, it’s a mash-up that works.

Of course, the focus of the novella is the romantic relationship between the two protagonists. Four words: steamy, and too quick. I’m all for the reforming bad boys cliché, but Demon’s Fall moved at a pretty fast clip in that department. I would have appreciated a little more development, a couple more pages in that section. I wasn’t disappointed, but it was a little thought in the back of my head while I read.

Bonus: the secondary characters and setting. This story worked for me mostly because of the wonderful description of Hellsgate, the funny and endearing secondary characters, and how the protagonists interacted with both. Some of the supporting characters provided crucial moments of hilarity in conversation, or made me randomly smile. So that was a huge plus. I can also tell that I love a fantasy setting when I find myself hoping that there will be more books set in that ‘world.’ I’ll say it: I want more!

Recommended for: fans of steamy romance, angels, demons, unconventional fantasy mash-ups, and original world-building. Again, an advisory: adult-level reading.

I’ve been looking for a good dangle (that’s demon/angel) books since I finished Covet, yes, I am a J.R. Ward apologist and I’m not sorry. I’m a firm believer in sticking by the BDB author and like the illustrious Brittany Spears, I believe she will come back to us. She will bring back shivalinga to our poor starving Indian village. (Someone was watching the Indian Jones series again on DVD. Five naked hottie photos to those who guess which one).

When I saw the Demon’s Fall blurb on Netgalley, I practically gave my index finger whiplash to request a review.

The story starts off with Kenan, a succubus demon, at the Hellsgate market place where he happens upon a rare find… an angel. After trading souls collected in coins he takes Jahel home with him hoping to seduce her into giving him her soul. To gain her trust he agrees to help her find the soul she lost to a hellhound. What started out as seduction soon leads to passion and emotions Kenan has never felt for any being.

“Why did he hit you?” she asked, absently tracing the outline of his fingers.

Kenan cleared his throat. “I wanted to touch your hair.” His voice was deeper than usual.

“And then you bought me and took me out of that cage.”

“Are you sorry I did?”

“No.” But her smile was a little cooked. “I’m grateful. If what you wanted was to touch my hair…” “Do you still want to?”

He had to force himself not to grab her. Instead he reached out with his free hand and sank it into the cloudsilk of her hair.

He tilted her chin up and kissed her.

More often than not paranormal/urban fantasy books will have extensive world building right front and center which can cause me to have sci-fi overload. Or as we like to call it Scifitus*. I liked how it was more spread out in this one and focused instead on the two main characters. Although it didn’t bring anything new to the demon/angel genre, I was ok with that. Sometimes I’m not looking for ‘newness’ instead I just want to read a good sex romance story.

If you like more of the erotic paranormal reads from this publisher, Demon’s Fall is a enjoyable read that kept me engrossed all the way throughout the story.

The inhabitants of Hellgate live on the human side of the veil, they’re mostly demons, or humans who have forfeited a vital part of themselves.

You see, demonic currency is unlike any currency we know on Earth. Theirs is a coin based economy, and their coins are infused with the souls taken from mortals. In this world, Kenan has done alright for himself. He’s a succubus, and as such, his seductive charms can persuade even the most stubborn mortal to give up her soul after a night in his arms. However, the thrill is no longer the same, they’re falling for his nature, not Kenan the individual. When he spots a bedraggled angel in a cage, he promptly buys her, thinking this challenge will be unlike every other deal he's ever struck. But his unassuming “Gutterwing” will be his hardest challenge to date, but for other reasons that he initially fears.

Jahel is an angel on a mission. She’s in Hellgate to save the innocent soul of a young princess who was lured into the forests to be killed because her beauty rivaled that of her step mother and queen. When Kenan offers to help her, she is naturally suspicious of his motives. But before they know it, they are dragged into events that are far more sinister than one misplaced soul; the very future of the world could be at stake. Jahel and Kenan become prime suspects, and neither demons nor archangels are happy about their temporary union…

Demon’s fall has been created around a really intriguing idea. Unfortunately it fell a little short, partly because of its short length of only 100 pages. The blend of PNR/fairlytale was a new one for me. I’ve never seens the evil queen from a demonic POV before.

Ultimately, it was the ending I liked the best. There may not be room for a demon in Heaven or an angel in Hell, but what is left when you let go of your demon and angelic selves? Jahel & Kenan's final choice made for a good ending to an otherwise forgettable book.

Heaven and hell meet for a shot at love!

As an incubus, Kenan lives his life seducing women and collecting their souls in Hell. While walking the streets of the Hellsgate market, Kenan stumbles upon a rare find, a captive angel for sale. Never one to pass up a challenge, he purchases Jahel from the seller and takes her to his home. There, she reveals the reason for being in hell is to save the soul of a young girl in her charge. Kenan is awed by Jahel and decides to help her find the soul held by a hellhound, with intentions to seduce her. When the tables are turned and Kenan find himself falling for Jahel, these two find themselves fighting a battle that can bring on the apocalypse and end the passion they share.

This is a short read with excellent world building, engaging characters and driven by action. Jahel is a fascinating character that I wanted to learn more of, even as an angel she's not the strong and outspoken heroine I'm used to but has an innocence and sweetness to her that is very endearing. Kenan is a real charmer who's used to seducing his way through anything and is caught off guard when he meets Jahel who evokes an unbridled passion in him...it's always great to watch the ladies' man fall in love. Although the romance takes a back seat to the threat of an impending apocalypse, there are a few erotic moments between the two main characters that are worth mentioning. Demon's fall is a well crafted novella in a fascinating world of angels and demons that is a heavenly delight for those who enjoy a fight of good vs. evil and a forbidden romance!

This was a quick, short read. I really liked the concept of the story. We have an incubus, Kenan, who goes to a sort of slave auction in Hellsgate, and gets himself an angel, Jahel. She is in desperate need to get back the soul of the young girl she was assigned to. So Kenan convinces her that he will help her, and they set off in a chase through Hellsgate of this girls soul, meanwhile they start developing feelings for each other. They both fight the attraction at first, and he even seduces another girl in front of her, but they slowly give in to their feelings.

I liked the concept of Hellsgate, the town. However the town was missing some spark, some action, some danger, something! Of course this is a short story, so it's hard to cover all aspects of a story in regards to world building, romance, action. The romance between Kenan and Jahel starts off pretty quick, it's mildly erotic, but I was not too attached to their characters from the beginning.

They do go through some troubles trying to get the soul of the young girl back from a hellhound, and the storyline gets a little bit better towards the end where some more action comes into play, having to prevent the apocalypse and all.

I think the author might've tried to put too many ideas into a short story, and definetely it has more potential as a full book, but it was still an ok story!

Short and Sweet Paranormal Erotica!

An incubus demon named Kenan buys a caged angel “Jahel” in Hell’s Gate from a merchant in hopes of adding a priceless angel's soul to his collection. Getting other women’s souls by using his incubus nature has never been a problem in the past but his own desires is met head on with the angel whose desire is just as strong as his. In trying to seduce her he finds himself falling in love with her instead and willing to help her and protect her no matter the risks.

Kenan is so smitten with Jahel that he vows to help her find the lost soul that was taken by a hellhound. With the use of scenes from the Snow White fairy tale and some of the biblical prophecy along with the scare of an apocalypse ending, the adventure to find this lost stolen soul will draw you in quickly.

The romance/erotica was mildly-hot but enjoyable for a short quick read. The ending was very touching and left me smiling in awe at the happy ending.

What worked for me:
* The world-building was beautiful, especially given that this was a short story.
* I loved the whole slave market rescue thing
* I REALLY liked that the incubus ended up pursuing the angel. I'm a big fan of "hero in pursuit" type stories to begin with, and to have a lot of her sexual interest be both simple curiosity combined with feeling as though she need to "repay" him, was just wonderful because it truly threw him for a loop.
* I liked the chemistry, and felt that the love scenes were well done.

What didn't work for me:
* I wish it was a little longer, and they'd expounded on the whole apocalypse thing with the seals and such.
* I didn't care for the hero attempting to seduce another female in full view of the heroine. That's really not my thing in romances.

Overall, however I thoroughly enjoyed this story, and would love to see it expanded into a series.

Again sorry for the short blurbs I'm putting up lately just not enough time to write in detal.

Just wanted to say this is a sweet story with some very HOT scenes between Kenan an incubus and Jahel, an angel he buys at Hellsgate.

The story at times pulled at my heart as the love that was obviously developing between them two them had to put to question because of what they were and who they could love.

The story made the reader see that even though Kenon was a demon, and by nature classified as evil, he demonstrated honor, self-sacrifice, kindness and love that you wished for him to have happiness and redemption.

I would have loved it if there was an epilogue at the end to give the readers a glimpse into their future. Perhaps if their is a book 2.

This is a really good short book! The sex scenes are very descriptive so it is not for anyone under the age of 16. Jahel and Kenan have an interesting relationship. I was kinda sad to see the story end so quickly! Very quick read!

I felt like Jahel gave in a little too quickly after Kenan bought her, but I guess things had to happen quickly since this was only 75 pages long. It was a good short story. Wouldn't mind learning more about Tiras and his backstory.

By giving this only 2 stars, I'm not saying this was bad. But this takes place in Hellsgate, which is right outside of Hell (obviously) and populated mostly by demons. But practically every character we meet, is a good guy. Especially the main one, Kenan. I don't want to say it was a boring read, because it wasn't, but everything seemed too easy. I did love how they used souls that were bound to coins as currency there though. That was cool.

Jahel is an angel that was guarding a soul and lost it to a hellhound. So she goes to Hellsgate to try to find and save that soul. Instead, she is trapped, collared, and sold. The only fortunate thing is that it was Kenan who bought her. Kenan is an incubus, and perhaps because he's more human that the rest, but he never acts very demon like. At first he buys Jahel because her soul would make a great coin to keep in his collection. But also immediately he finds himself wanting to help her instead.

And that's what we get here. The two of them going around finding information and doing what they need to do to get this soul back. But along with their story is another one. A scroll was stolen from Heaven and the thief is determined to start a war between Heaven and Hell by kickstarting Armageddon. Honestly, that story was more interesting than the main one. I will say that I was happy with how this ended for the two of them though.

Beautifully Written

There aren’t a lot of memorable, sweet stories where a demon & angel get together - this one is a wonderful exception. My only complaint is that it ended! I would love to read a sequel.

Trying to get back the lost soul of a girl she was supposed to protect, the angel Jahel gets captured in Hellsgate, a town right before Hell proper; caged and eventually sold to an incubus demon named Kenan. Although he initially only has intentions to capture Jahel’s soul, he comes to like the angel and eventually aids her on her mission to reclaim the lost soul of her protegée. As his feelings for Jahel are growing beyond simple attraction, he learns that Jahel is not the only angel who got lost in Hellsgate as of late…and the other one has plans to commence a war between Heaven and Hell.

I’m usually not a very big fan of novellas, as I tend to believe it is hard to do some decent world-building, create believable character-development and make the reader feel a bond with your characters in such a short amount of time. However, Karalynn Lee manages these three jobs quite well, much to my amazement. The world-building in this novella is impressive. In just under 80 pages, she creates a world existing of three planes: the mortal plane, Heaven and Hell, an obscure ‘third path’ for people who choose neither Heaven nor Hell, and some towns with mixed inhabitants, both mortal and angelic in Heavensgate (although angels only fly over it, and hardly stop to walk through it) and human and demons in Hellsgate. I really liked the world she created: nothing too complicated, but a decent and solid base to fall back upon.

The currency in this well-designed world is souls: Angels want to save them, whereas Demons trade them for other goods. Kenan, one of two main characters, is used to collecting souls from his victims, who give him their full name and soul willingly once he seduces them – which is quite easy, considering he’s an incubus. Initially the only reason why he buys the Angel Jahel, is so he can secude her and then claim her soul. I loved how the dynamics between Kenan and Jahel slowly changed once he had taken her back to his home, and goes to great lengths to earn her trust and respect. The attraction between the two of them is clear from the start, but their affections towards each other develop slowly throughout the story – which was great, because I hate it when a romance blossoms too fast and then you lose every interest in the characters or their further relationship. This is definately not the case here.

The story is very action-driven, from reclaiming a Princess’ soul from a Hellhound, secuding a wicked queen and trying to prevent a war between Heaven and Hell, a lot of things are happening and sometimes it’s just too much. Had all of this taken place in a 400 page novel, it would have been fun and entertaining, but to push all of that in a 70 page novella is a bit too ambitious. It left a lot of questions unanswered (for instance: Why use souls as a currency? Why would an angel want to start a war between Heaven and Hell? What actually happens when you lose your soul?), and little room for details. All in all, this left me a bit dissapointed. There were things I wanted to know more about, and things I think could have easily been left out, for example the whole Snow White sidestory. To be honest, I was a bit confused about all that: when you have a novel with a great storyline and interesting characters, then why suddenly fall back upon a well-known fairytale? It just seemed out of place.

All in all, Karalynn Lee was perhaps a bit too ambitious considering all the things she wanted to include in the novel, but on the other hand she did do a great job writing her novella. I loved the characters and their relationship, the fast-paced action and upcoming Apocalyps/War Between Heaven and Hell backstory. The ending really left me impressed, although I won’t get into more detail about that. ;) I would love to read more from her, and can’t wait until she writes another book. Perhaps a novel this time?

It was a very well written book and the plot was engaging. The adage "opposites attract" applies to this book. You have a demon falling in love with an angel. They go thru all the strife of a couple who aren't suppose D to be together. It was a romantic story. I would like to see what else this author has written.

A demon purchases an angel from the market from a peddler thinking he could capture her soul. Little did he know that he would turn into a helpful demon and retrieve lost souls for her instead. Together they go thru dangerous situations, using their strengths to help each other. The Third Plane was a destination neither knew a lot about, to be together it was their only option. Would they willingly give up their immortality? This was a clever take on religion and romance, a perspective that allows all the taboos of sexuality with religion. Demon's Fall was a slow starter for me, once I got past the 3rd chapter. The story flowed well and I enjoyed it. If you are looking for a book that is full of religious taboos in a pleasent way, you will enjoy this book.

Angles, Demons, and a love that transcends the boundaries of Heaven and Hell. The tale Karalynn Lee weaves with spellbinding skill in"Demon's Fall." The angel Jahel finds herself imprisoned in the Hellsgate marketplace. Jahel certain there is no way she ever save the soul she did not protect.

Chained and dirty, she bought by the incubus Kenan. Who aspires to add Jahel's soul to his collection. Unknowing it's his own thats ensnared.

Lee's "Demon's Fall" is a well-written, absorbing tale that I found enjoyable and disappointed to reach the end of the book. Considering the length of the story, the characters are flesh out and the pace remains quick throughout the story.

I have a feeling. I will not be th only one hoping Lee revisits. The story of Jahel and Kenan to further flesh out their tale and expand on the rapid-fire events of this book.(I also hope the editing issue in Chapter Four is corrected.)

Kenan couldn't believe what he found, A caged angel at the gates of Hell. The angel was in such a small cage that she had to wrap her wings around herself and all you could see is a dirt smugged face. Kenan purchased the angel, set out to win her over. Jahel wasn't so sure of Kenan a demon. Normally, angels and demons didn't mingle. Jahel frustrated over her capture. She had come to Hell to regain the soul of one she was protecting. When Kenan agreed to help her. She began to trust. The Demon who rescued her.

Through travels amidst Hell, they searched for a way to get the soul back, but nearly cost themselves their own souls. The war of Heaven and Hell was on the brink of happening. Could Jahel and Kenan survive? Could they save the one they had meant to? Could their budding romance survive the separation?

Demon's Fall is a short Novella with an interesting idea that demons and angels can fall in love with each other. The author pits them in a battle of their lives and their hearts. A story you won't be sorry you read.

It was a good story of good versus evil. It was a decent story but turned me off with the Snow White reference. I don't want to read a fairy tail and felt the story would have been better off without the reference.

It did nothing for the story. This would be an immense series and has plenty of material to explore. The constant fight of good and evil is ageless. I loved the different demons and would have liked to read more about the other varieties evils and the inhabitants of Hells Gate!

I’m always intrigued by stories that feature an angel-demon dynamic and interweave Biblical beliefs. I won’t lie – I have a degree in Biblical Studies so I’m a bit of a snob for when things are taken and twisted to be something else. However, those that either do it well or create their own world are the ones to be really admired.

Demon’s Fall creates it’s own world; I was never certain what time period to call it, which made it all that much more interesting. The bulk of the story takes place in Hellsgate, a city of mixed mortal and demonic population just this side of Hell. Here demons and mortals co-exist. The worldbuilding was really cool; the author acknowledges the self-serving nature of both angels and demons; angels want humans to go to Heaven because it’s better – demons want humans souls to commit to hell, because in both instances the angel or demon gets something. There is also a reference to a third path humans can take but it’s only mentioned in passing.

Demon’s Fall does take some Biblical prophecy and craft it to its own purposes. This could be cliché; I know I’ve seen so many things that twist the book of Revelations that I almost squirm and fight to not roll my eyes – but the way that it was done in Demon’s Fall was just really cool. It no longer seemed as if the author was twisting Christianity to fit the story, but that we were talking about something completely different – a whole other pantheon and prophecy.

The novella is, despite my long winded assessment of the setting and prophecy of the story, a love story. A demon purchases a caged angel and proceeds to fall in love with her. The story is told from Kenan’s point of view, which I thought was interesting because in the long run it was Jahel who had more to lose. My biggest problem with most romance novellas is that the actual step to falling in love rarely feels plausible. I will admit that the romance didn’t 100% convince me that they were in love, and perhaps that was why – oh wait, that would be a spoiler ;D about three fourths of the way through I was liking the build of the romance, but it’s that last chapter that sealed it for me and made me wanna go – aawweee.

Demon’s Fall is also an erotic novella, so yes, there is sex and it is graphic in nature – it’s erotic. But despite the titillating factor it is motivated by the story, it’s not just sex for the sake of having sex depicted on the page. On a purely logistical nature, it’s interesting to see how one would manage wings and sex.

Not for younger readers, or readers who are easily offended by warping traditional Christian beliefs. But if you like a short romance that is both erotic and fantastical – read it. I liked it a lot.

ISBN: 9781426890680
Summary:

Review:
I have to admit one of the reasons I read this eBook was because of the cover. It’s a quite pretty cover. Another reason was because it deals with angels and demons but paints a different world outside of Heaven and Hell.
Kenan is quite sexy though I guess he has to be since he’s an incubus. His only reason for buying Jahel was so he could sleep with her and add her soul to his collection because having an angel’s soul is very rare. From the minute he brought her back to his house is was full-blown seduction. I was curious to see how Jahel would react to his charm, if she would succumb just like any other mortal woman. I would have loved to read her thought process throughout his endeavors but reading Kenan’s thoughts was awesome. Watching him growing more attached to Jahel was great. Once he gets what he wants from her she leaves. He’s torn yet thrilled but his love for her takes over and he journey’s to find her again. When he does, he proves to her that he loves her and they give up their mortality to grow old together.
Rewind: Jehel came to find the girl she was supposed to be protecting. In my opinion, the girl turned out to be Snow White. Weird right? It was very well played though and I don’t have any complaints about it. Well, except the fact that Kenan slept with the Queen (Snow White’s evil stepmother or whatever.)
Back on topic. I love this story! It has some steamy sex scenes and an awesomely sketched out world. I’m giving Demon’s Fall a 4 star rating.

Kenan has just purchased an angel from the Hellsgate marketplace and plans to use his allure and skills that comes with being an incubus in order to add her soul to his collection. He plans to gain Jahel's trust by helping her get back the soul of a young girl she was supposed to protect. Kenan's plan quickly goes awry when he starts to lose his heart to Jahel. As their attraction grows, they get caught up in a battle between good and evil that could lead to the end of it all.

Kenan first wants Jahel because he sees an angel and wants to add her to his sexual conquests. It doesn't take long before he has something more permanent in mind. To get her to trust him, Kenan offers to help Jahel find the soul of a young woman she looks after. This is a shorter book so the romance starts right away. Well what is supposed to be romance. I didn't feel the attraction between Kenan and Jahel for the most part and there isn't much heat to the erotic scenes. Most of the book is spent trying to get the soul back from a hellhound at Hellsgate. You'd think it would be a dark, dangerous place but instead it feels like an old, dull town. Not what comes to mind when you think hell. The story moves at a slower pace even though there are mirror demons and witches who are trying to kill their step daughter (yup, snow white reference).

Things pick up quickly when an archangel is seen in Hellsgate and you find out that someone has stolen a scroll from heaven and broken a seal that has released War, a horseman of the apocalypse. I liked this story line but it felt like it was just thrown in at the end to make things more exciting. One minute Kenan and Jahel are making a trade for the soul and the next an archangel and Lilith (yes that Lilith) are at Kenan's door telling him the Scroll of Revelations has been stolen and a war that will lead to the apocalypse is close to starting. This story would have been a good read on its own but like I said, it just didn't fit with what happened in the first 3/4ths of the book.

Overall this was an ok book. The characters didn't wow me and I didn't feel anything between Kenan and Jahel until the very end. I would have enjoyed it a lot more if the apocalypse story line would have been to main focus rather than finding the soul of a person we never even meet. The story and romance had a bland feel to it. I guess I just expected more from a romance story about an incubus and angel that is takes places at Hellsgate.

Demon’s Fall is a sweet, almost novella-length paranormal erotica story where Kenan, an incubus, purchases a captured angel, Jahel, with the intent to collect her soul through his incubus powers – sex of course. Kenan collects souls, which once extracted from a person/being, become token coins. With the purchase of Jahel, he sees her angel soul as the ultimate soul that would be in his collection. These initial plans, however, do not go as planned as he becomes more and more enamored with Jahel’s physique, and also after he decides to be honest and truly trying to gain Jahel’s trust by offering to help Jahel with her mission which brought her to Hellsgate in the first place.

I found the angel-demon relationship and dynamic to be an interesting storyline – and I especially was fond of the originality of the setting and some parts of the mythology / Biblical references. The author provided very well written descriptions of the places and different characters and beings encountered in the story. The story’s time period is a bit unclear, but from Kenan’s mentions of his previous conquers and souls collected, it sounds like it could be anywhere from (what I think) the Middle Ages up to early/mid 1700’s. Though when this story takes place does not really have much, if any, significance to the story.

I really did enjoy reading this story. Though I thought it was going to have more elements of erotica in it, the scenes and elements that are found in the story are well written and fun and exhilarating to read. Though this book is put under the “erotica” genre, it pretty much only went as far as soft-core erotica, so for those that are looking for steamy sex scenes between angels and demons in every other page, this would not be a story for you. I’m a sucker for the forbidden love element, so the story delivered with Kenan and Jahel falling for each other. The ending was especially adorable, and a happy ending is always a plus.

An angel in Hellsgate is rare enough. A captured angel in Hellsgate…now, that presents a temptation for Kenan. The sexy incubus collects souls, and the angel’s would be a most rewarding addition. The opportunity too good to pass up, Kenan buys the angel, Jahel, intent on seducing her out of her immortal soul. What he finds instead, is that Jahel metaphorically captures his, fascinating him as no other being has and tempting him more than any woman ever could. Now the incubus is doing things he never believed he would, like helping Jahel find the soul that brought her so close to Hell in the first place. As desire, and something that is perhaps love, draws the angel and the demon closer together, their newfound relationship is threatened by the very real possibility of an apocalyptic war between Heaven and Hell.

Journey to the very brink of Heaven and the brush the depths of Hell in Karalynn Lee’s Demon’s Fall. An angel and a demon make the most unlikely of pairs, yet Jahel and Kenan are nothing less than a perfect match. Their romance is at the center of the exciting world Ms. Lee builds in Demon’s Fall, one that is fascinating and ripe with possibility. I admit, what has stuck with me the most after finishing Demon’s Fall is the world of Hellsgate and Ms. Lee’s spin on the world of angels and demons. This isn’t to say that Jahel and Kenan aren’t engaging characters, only that they had slightly less of an impact on me than the world-building Ms. Lee does in Demon’s Fall did. All in all, I found Demon’s Fall to be a highly entertaining read and I hope one day Ms. Lee revisits the captivating world she created.

The novel opens with Jahel, an angel, in the last place you would expect to find an angel, trapped in a cage, ready to be sold to whomever pays the right price. She has been captured in Hellsgate, a city populated by demons and lost mortals, caught between the mortal realm and Hell itself. She came to Hellsgate to find the soul of her former charge, feeling she failed to guard her. Instead, she found herself being purchased by a demon, an incubus named Kenan who, unbeknownst to her, plans to seduce her and steal her soul to add to his collection. Instead, he helps her, falls in love with her, and breaks all the rules in order to protect her.

Too many times, in novels with the theme of good versus evil, one or both sides are too much, either too good or too evil. For a mere mortal such as I, I know that rarely is anyone purely good or purely evil. I very much liked that in Demon's Fall, the author created a whole world, one in which there are shades of grey. In essence, both Jahel and Kenan have very much the same role, to collect souls, just for different ends. The interplay between the angel and the demon as they fell in love was interesting as the themes of good versus evil was shown in a way that made it seem as if it were coming from it's own pantheon or belief system, rather than using the traditional Christian views.

I also liked the fact that, while erotic, the sex in the novel wasn't gratuitous. It was integral to the story in that it both illustrated a non-traditional view of angels and demons and it enhanced the romance of the story. I would definately recommend this book!

Demon’s Fall by Karalynn Lee
* I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review*

Demon’s Fall is a story about love and redemption. It also has a modern twist on Snow White. Jahel follows the soul of a young girl she was watching to Hellsgate and ends up captured herself. She is bought at market by Kenan, who sees the angel as a challenge.

Kenan is used to woman falling all over him because he is an incubus. He seduces women for their souls and those coins are used as payment in Hellsgate. He is intrigued by Jahel and believes her soul would be a nice additional to his collection. The only catch is that she has to voluntarily give him her soul.

Jahel can’t believe that Kenan is treating her kindly and even offered to help her find the lost soul she is seeking. His actions are completely out of character for a demon and she doesn’t know what to make of him. She is grateful for his help and realizes it’s the only way she will be able to help the girl. She can’t cause harm to others or do anything that goes again her Angel principles, but Kenan isn’t bound to the same principles she is.

As the angel and incubus search for the lost soul, they realize that other things are in play that could be cataclysmic if not stopped. They have their hands full but still manage to fall in love through it all.

I enjoyed Demon’s Fall and give it 3½ Flaming Hearts.

Jahel is an angel ready to be sold. Yeah. You read it right. Sold. After being captured in a city with mostly demons and lost souls, that was her destiny: being in a cage, waiting for the one who will buy her. The surprise is when she ends up being bought by a demon, Kenan. Could it be the beginning of her end?

His intentions clearly aren't the best, as we could expected from a demon. It is obvious that her end will be souless, right?

I thought the plot was interesting when I read the synopses, and I wasn't wrong: it is an interesting book. The narrative is very good, and the balance between characters was well made.

So, what was my problem with it? Yes, I had a problem with this book: it was just too short. There were so many things I thought could have been better explained, turning the book into a real book and not just a tale, like it seemed to be. The story, the author, the characters, had potencial for more than the few pages that this book had, and I felt, at the end, like it was missing pages. The story is concluded, this wasn't the problem... But we could have had so much more in the middle.

Overall, it was a good book. Could be great if we had more, but I think it did an OK job.

How do you critique something for being exactly what it says on the tin? That's the question I'm left with after reading Demon's Fall, because it's exactly what it looks like: a pretty plot-thin softcore porn. I'd probably have declined to review it if I hadn't already blindly accepted the request from NetGalley, so here we are.

What the summary doesn't tell you about Demon's Fall is that it is short. Very short. Like 75 pages short. So there's not a lot of room for development, or a very complex plot, or, more importantly, any relationship development at all. To say the angel in this story gives it up easily is an understatement. They're together for all of a half-hour before she's rubbing up against him like a love-struck cat, despite the fact that he, you know, bought her. And our male lead here, Kenan, doesn't do much but kiss her before he decides he's head over heels in love. It's never really explained why, either. I mean, he says multiple times he's been with thousands of women (again and again, they sing the same tune...) and doesn't find her particularly attractive. And then they kiss and he's gone on her.

Um, okay...

Jahel, the angel, has come to Hellsgate trying to retrieve the soul of one of her charges from a Hellhound. When Kenan offers his aid, Jahel accepts and hopes to return to Heaven soon.

DEMON'S FALL is a paranormal romance with a likable hero and heroine and an interesting premise. I only have one small quibble, in that, I would have liked the world to have been explained in more detail and expanded upon. Other than this, I quite enjoyed DEMON'S FALL, especially the characters of Jahell and Kenan. Kenan, while an incubus, is rather yummy and not so bad in the beginning. As the story progresses, Kenan begins to fall for Jahell and to change, because of that love.. Jahel, also, begins to fall for Kenan. During this process, they grow and change, and in the end, must chose to sacrifice for love or continue as they are.

All in all, DEMON'S FALL is a delightful paranormal read, which leaves this reader wanting more.
