The two Amazon Editorial Reviews (from Publishers Weekly and Booklist) just don't get it. Why is it hard for people to understand that a book written by a Christian, for a Christian audience, by a Christian publisher will develop it's theme from a Christian perspective. And why would someone wonder how a Christian could believe that God could hear a billion prayers at once (since, God being God, from the Christian world-view, can hear an infinite number of prayers at any given "moment").

"More Than Meets the Eye," by Dr. Richard Swenson offers exactly what the subtitle accurately promises: fascinating glimpses of God's power and design. It does not pretentiously pretend to offer in-depth scientific analysis. It does present micro and macro signs of God's transcendence and immanence. Science and faith, when looked at with what Luther called "reason redeemed by grace," consistently connect to show God's handiwork, God's fingerprints, God's footprints everywhere--from the largest star to the smallest particle. No, "More Than Meets the Eye" is not the final word. However, it is a fascinating glimpse for those willing to look at creation and the Creator with intellectual integrity and spiritual authenticity.

Good reminders of how big creation is and how that should push us to praise the creator. A lot of this will be familiar if you were a science major in undergrad.

Incredible book. It lays out clearly and concisely the wonder of creation (large and small scale) and the endless complexities that surround and inhabit us and how they all point back to God. This book makes you feel so small and so incredibly loved by God. I will definitely be reading this again and again.

Just a really awesome read. This book goes super in depth into scientific concepts and points them all back to the sovereignty of God. Some of the ideas are hard to grasp at times, but even if you only understand half of what this book is describing, it’s still worth the read.

Not having taken much interest in math and science much, it was kinda difficult to grasp certain ideas or concepts. But I have learned so much more about biology and physics, and I am in awe of how intricate and perfect God created everything. It reminded me of my own insignificance compared to the size of the universe and the intensity of his love through the cross. I would recommend it, especially for those who are math and science geeks out there!

science vs. faith

the book, more than meets the eye, is a wonderful exposition of scientific discoveries of our body and the universe where we live. yet, amazingly all scientific findings can't help to point out the sovereignty of a powerful being who orchestrates everything in order and design. all human effort to know and dig deeper into the world of science would only integrate and solidify our faith in the creator!

With my finite mind, reading a topic on the infinite.
There’s no doubt in my mind, feeble with age, ONLY God would create the complexities described by the author.
After reading this book, I know my child-like faith is encouraged even more to meet Jesus.
Read the book if you have doubts or are curious of the science of creation.
The chapters, for example: “The Story of the Stars”, or “The Brain and Nervous System”, have been researched and written by a well educated man who loves Jesus.

God is awesome.

"Truthful science, however, always tells us much about the power, precision, design and sovereignty of God--details we learn nowhere else." (Pg 185)

Science and God do relate.

Since we are alive, God must love us.

Amazing facts about God's creation and how only God could have created it all. The body is soooooo intricate and could never have just happened by chance . . . only by the combination of certain cells could human life exist.

Mind blowing

My puny brain was taxed to it's limit to read about physics. But all so fascinating. I couldn't put it down, but I couldn't comprehend it at the same time. So many questions! This will leave me thinking for a long while.

“The truth of Scripture, the life of Christ, the discoveries of science - all should combine to lift as heavenward.”

“People of faith often tend to fear science or even dread it...Science is thrilling. True science is a friend of Truth. It is only the misinterpretation and misapplication of science that ought to be feared... Truthful science, however, always tells us much about the power, precision, design, and sovereignty of God – details we learn nowhere else.”

I picked up this book as background reading to be able to effectively, informatively, and engagingly present topics of human anatomy to a group of teen-aged students. I was fascinated by this book: by the depth of the author’s knowledge; by his fantastic sense of humor, interjected everywhere throughout the book; and by his careful attention to giving God the glory for every facet of creation that was shared through the pages.

I was captivated as I learned new things, understood familiar topics better, and was presented with a wealth of interesting statistical and factual information. All of which has shared new, interesting, and rich light on the sovereignty of God in creation.

I have always struggled to understand physics and all concepts related to Einstein‘s physics and things like quantum’s, photons, etc. The author has explained these topics well for the scientific layman. I appreciated his explanation of how we are limited by the dimensions that we can experience here on earth in this life right now.

My mind has a new perspective because of this book, and by looking at the Scriptures with science in mind, I have a whole new appreciation for the one true God, and a whole new eagerness to experience eternity with Him.

Swenson’s book is a journey through a number of areas of science to show how they point to the hand of God, the Creator. He describes in great detail topics such as how finely tuned conditions are for human life and the incredible complexity of both the universe and the human body. I really enjoyed Swenson’s books on maintaining margin in our lives, but I was less impressed by this one. That may be because many of the things he cites were not new to me and seemed somewhat repetitive. The book is also a bit dated as it was first published in 2000. Despite those reservations, it can be fun to read. I would recommend this book to Christians who don’t have a lot exposure to the wonder of science, especially those who may not be familiar with some of the work of Michael Behe and other intelligent design proponents.

Swenson’s More Than Meets the Eye was a fun read!

Swenson’s book tackles the ideas of a universe and a human body being created by the Christian God. Swenson iterates how intricate the human body was created, and how it all points to a creator. He briefly discusses chemistry and how this points to a creator with its detailed design. Swenson changes course for the second half of the book and discusses physics and the universe.

To sum this book up, Swenson has found a way to connect all that he is interested in back to who created it. It is a fascinating way to view life and work. We all should take notes from him on that.

I would highly recommend this book to teenagers who can understand some of the physics and chemistry. It will be great to put the idea in their head that they need to link their life and passions back to the one who created all of it.

Enjoyable dive into science, mainly the human body (somewhat familiar territory) and physics (a huge stretch!) way out into space and time. Lightened by touches of humor that made me chuckle here and there.

Excellent read! So encouraging, uplifting, fascinating! Also, lots of science. Be prepared for science. Modern scientific discoveries of magnificent proportions over a range of areas point to greater faith in a greater God. He holds our whole world together literally!

This was a fascinating book! Dr. Richard Swenson uses creation to talk about the power, sovereignty, and omniscience of God. He goes into detail about the body, including the complexity of our 5 senses and the organs we use for them, how our muscles work, and even how our DNA is put together to form us, to show the Creator at work. He then moves on to talk about the complexity of the universe, how it behaves uniformly when looked at from our reference point, and how things get pretty crazy when you reach the subatomic particle level. By using the details of us and the universe, he weaves together a fascinating look at how religion and science do not have to be at odds, but instead science can actually be used to show God's existence.

Wow, the human body is such an amazing machine, and the more one learns about the galaxies, etc., it is beyond what one can grasp. In parts this book gets rather technical, but that just makes me want to read this book again in the future.

Scientist-astonomer writes about the vast temperatures and energy of the sun and then asks if God is bigger and impermeable, and if so, why don't we trust him more.
