The Voice of Judah

Allen and his fellow Exorcist, the formidable and misanthropic Yu Kanda, discover the latter's background—including his true nature and purpose—in visions that flash back to his childhood. Yu's memories of this time have long been suppressed, and it seems for good reason. They not only involve Yu but another child named Alma, and expose how desperate certain factions within the Black Order were to counter the threat posed by the akuma and their master, the Millennium Earl!

what would you do if we were lovers and we died so they transplanted our brains into bodies of children so they could exploit us further in the name of holy war and then we regained our memories but you wanted us to die together and i wanted to live but the only way i could do it was by killing you but it turns out you were kept alive only to be exploited even further while i kept on working for the same order that abused us and i finally meet you again after almost a decade while i'm on a mission with my new boyfriend that i pretend to hate but i actually never stopped being haunted by the ghost of you because you were a part of my soul... what would you do then?

Oh, Yu Kanda. I started this series hating you (oh boy, another Sasuke-type character to brood in the corner!) but with every volume have grown to love you. This volume is like a heartbreaking love letter to all Yu fans, showing us where he came from and his true heart. It is also the story of two friends - Yu and Alma - and how the so-called 'good guys' did some very terrible things in the name of justice, terrible things with terrible consequences that tore the lives of these young people apart forever. Paired with Katsura Hoshino's sleeker, updated art style, this volume is bursting from page to page with the best that D.Gray-Man has to offer so far. My only complaint may be that the Yu/Alma backstory completely dominates this volume after a point, leaving Allen and Road little chance to appear on page beyond token cameos despite also being a part of the current story. I wish Hoshino had found a way to weave together past and present for a more fluid narrative, but given how wonderful the finished product is anyway, I can't fault her terribly much. Also: ack, they stepped on the Earl! The Earl's dialogue is always my favorite, especially his dialogue tags, y'know? ♥

Fully revealed Kanda's backstory and it was so heartbreaking. No wonder his personality is like that. I hope he could slowly open up to the others.

Allen finally knows his past too, now you two should be a good friends.

Justtttt so good. Billion stars for this volume ✨✨✨

Rating: 4.8

This volume is so good, this plot arc focuses on Kanda and Alma. It shows the cruelty of the Black Order with the second exorcists.

The Art is so good in this volume and you can really see how much Hoshino is improving. I really enjoyed the succinct way that the slow corruption of the happy character who ends up going Berserk.

I absolutely love where DGM is going from here.

4.5/5 I really liked this volume. Very dark and grim as we get a more complete history on Kanda’s past and on who Alma is and on what exactly the Second Exorcist Experiments actually are. The Allen and Kanda cover is excellent this volume.

Read 11/7/20 part of a 3-in-1

This volume provided a lot of insight on Kanda Yuu's past, and the Black Order's past. To me a lot of it was heart wrenching, that's possibly because I a big Kanda fangirl, but nonetheless, it was really twisted a messed up. It truly shows that the Black Order isn't a light as we think it is (again, it shows the grayness of the "good" side and how it isn't all that good). It answers quiet a number of questions that readers have been asking since the very beginning, especially about Kanda and the certain someone he’s been looking for, for the past nine years, what happened with Alma Karma and the whole ordeal about the 2nd generation of exorcist.

We are told not to judge a book by it's cover, but seriously when I saw the cover I knew that this volume is going to be good. (couldn't stop fangirling over Kanda and Allen!)

This volume reveals Kanda's past in a more precise perspective. I really enjoy the change in drawing style on Hoshino's part, the art is absolutly beautiful!

I definitely recommand D.Gray Man fans to purchase this volume, it is a must for collections.

This volume is an emotional roller coaster ride. Kanda's backstory takes most of this volume with only a little input from other characters, and I think Hoshino was right to sideline Allen for most of it except for the few times we need a quick explanation.

Terribly done background on a character that I would actually prefer remained mysterious. New character have been added to the series in a way that does not manage to retain my interest... I actually regret purchasing this book (and the next 6, after it).

Niños pequeños sufriendo...ahg, no los soporto PERO NO LE PODES HACER ESO A UN PIBITO! NOOO!

A retirement party inside Kanda Yu’s brain. The Millennium Earl and the Noah are throwing it for Allen Walker. Tyki Mikk is a little reluctant to share Allen with the rest of the family. Road seems to still value Allen for himself. The Earl still seems to care about the Fourteenth even if he’s an enemy. Kanda has some truly painful memories of who he is, ones he’s lost of an old friend, more than an old friend. Even as Allen and Kanda try to fight their way out of the Noah invasion, err, party, Allen and Road find themselves on a journey into Kanda’s lost memories, discovering some of the darkest secrets of the Black Order. Bak Chan’s family played a part in these secrets, a part which haunts Bak to this day.

Humour and horror, action and tragedy all cranked up the intensity of this volume, making it one of the best books in this series I’ve read thus far. So much was happening, so much was revealed. All of it was character-driven. Some of the panels and cover art were amongst the most beautiful I’ve ever seen. It’s because of volumes like this I read this series. It’s because of volumes like this I’m eager to read the next one.

God, I just love the interpersonal stuff. I love how they handle the stuff that the clergy of the church are trying to win the war, even when it defies everything moral. It's such an interesting take on the church and what they'd be willing to do in a modern holy war with actual demons.

This was a good fight, even though the humour did get in the way of the gravity of the battle. Yet I did find Allen being possessed by the Fourteenth a gripping and shocking yet the flash back was interesting too.

This was a heartbreaking volume. I was confused at first, but I trusted the process and got the answers I need. It was nice to get Kanda's backstory and understand why he is the way he is. Definitely revealed a lot of revelations.
