Clare grew up in the Yorkshire Dales and was an award-winning journalist when she had the idea for a gritty historical thriller series set in Victorian York featuring Britain's first forensic crime scene photographer. She was inspired to write Ada's Fawkes's story when she discovered that women had been acting as secret sleuths for the police for decades. While her visits to York Castle Museum's old Victorian streets as a child fuelled her fascination with the dark side of the ancient walled city. Her first novel, Winter of Shadows was shortlisted for the Historical Writers' Association Debut Crown. Clare lives on the coast in Northumberland and when she is not at her desk, she is on the beach, walking or swimming.
