The story behind the entire career of the largest and most glamorous superliner
Queen Mary 2 was constructed in 2004 to great fanfare—the largest, longest, grandest, and most expensive ocean liner ever built. She overtook the beloved QE2 in the glamour stakes and has become a favorite around the world, her popularity soaring once again since the retirement of QE2 in November 2008. Her interiors and 14 spacious decks put QM2 head and shoulders above the rest and harken back to the golden age of ocean liners. Here, QM2 and QE2 experts present the full story behind this great liner, from her concept as the next generation of ocean liner to her groundbreaking achievements. With many previously unpublished photographs and fascinating little-known facts, this is a must-have for all those who love ocean travel.
There’s a lot of great information packed neatly into this small volume that I picked up in the bookshop while on QUEEN MARY 2 (QM2) last year. Readers are treated to brief histories of Cunard, transatlantic crossings, and the earlier Queens, accompanied by marvelous photos. (My favorite was the spread on pp. 62–63 showing QM2 and QUEEN ELIZABETH 2 (QE2) before and during their tandem crossing in 2004.) I recommend it as a memento of a QM2 voyage, or as a quick read for anyone who wants to step on board vicariously.
