Philip Steele was born in Dorking, Surrey, England. He attended University College, Durham, where he studied modern languages. In the 1970s he worked as an editor for various publishers, including Hodder and Hamlyn. In 1980 he moved to the Isle of Anglesey, in North Wales, where he now lives. He has written on a wide range of topics, especially in the fields of history, junior biography, peoples, and cultures.
One of my five-year-old granddaughter’s favorite books. She loves pulling out the page extensions to see the lengthy train illustrations. Also lifting the flaps to see people in fancy dining cars and hobos on a freight. The bridge on the Trans Siberian express that appears to be upside down fascinates her. Her great-grandfather was a machinist on the Union Pacific so we have a special interest in imbuing a love of trains.
The illustrations and text cover a fairly wide, if shallow, range of train and underground history and technology. This makes it a great launching pad for learning more, as a child is ready and interested on any particular day.
This is an amazing book for anyone who is interested in trains and their history. With flip out parts and a ingenious pull out sections, readers will start when trains were just appearing around the world to the future they'll hold for us. This book won't last long in a library collection due to it's special features, but as a private book, it'll be a treasure.
choo choo bitches. I read this for work. Not a storytime book but my child would love it. I do not love trains but at least its pretty to look at while you are being bored out of your parent mind by reading about trains for the nteenth time. Don't even get me started on trains and colonial expansion...

Str. 6- tirnice so obstajale že dolgo pred prvimi vlaki. Stari Grki in Rimljani so izdelovali vozove z enako razdaljo med kolesi, ki so tekla po zarezah, izdolbenih v kamnite ceste. ..... Nato je leta 1804 britanski inženir Richard Trevithick izumil prvo vozilo na parni pogon. Uporabljali so ga v železarni Pen y Darren v južnem Walesu. ... Leta 1829 sta George in Robert (oče in sin) Stephenson na velikem tekmovanju v angleškem mestecu Rainhill blizu Liverpoola predstavila svojo novo raketo lokomotivo Raketa. .. Tekmece je zlahka premagala, saj je razdaljo sto kilometrov prevozila s povprečno hitrostjo 24 km/g, pri tem pa je za sabo vlekla 15-tonski tovor.
Str. 7- leta 1910 je imela največjo mrežo tirov Nemčija. .. Prva medkrajevna železnica na svetu je bila angleška LMR (Liverpool and Manchester Railway), ki so jo odprli leta 1830. .. ZDA so železnico hitro sprejele in svoje ogromno ozemlje prepredle s kilometri in kilometri tirov. Med prvimi lokomotivami je bila De Witt Clinton iz leta 1831, ki je prva vozila po zvezni državi New York.
Str. 8- odročno podeželje in prevoz denarja sta bila nevarna kombinacija, zato so bili konec 19. stoletja ropi vlakov na severnoameriškem zahodu zelo pogosti. Med zloglasnimi roparji so bili Jesse James, Butch Cassidy in Harry Longbaugh aka Sundance Kid.
Str. 9- prva čezcelinska železnica v ZDA je bila zgrajena med letom 1863 in 69. Povezovala je železniško mrežo ob atlantski obali s tihomorsko obalo. Nova proga je bila dolga 2826 km.
str. 10- so dolgih letih razstreljevanja in vrtanja v živo skalo so delavci izkopali predor Simplon pod Alpami, ki povezuje Švico in Italijo. Dolg je kar 20 km in ima dve progi.
Str. 14- Po avstralski divjini. Dizelski ekspresni vlak The Gahn drvi skozi osrčje Avstralije in v 48 urah prevozi 2980 km med mestom Adelaide in Darwin. Vlak je dobil po afganistanskih jezdecih kamel, ki so pred 150 leti prvi utrli pot skozi notranjost puščave. ... Glavna proga Transsibirske zeleznice je dolga 9259 km. Pot traja teden dni. Jo sonce v Moskvi zahaja, na končni postaji v Vladivostoku že vzhaja. Zgradili so jo med letom 1891 in 1916.
Str 16- najvišja železnica v Evropi. Zobata železnica premaga 9 km pot do postaje Jungfrau, ki leži 3454 m nad gladino morja. Večino proge pred sneženimi viharji in nizkimi temperaturami ščiti dolg predor, izvrtan skozi gori Eiger in Mönch.
Str. 17- najstrmejši naklon. Ozkotirna švicarska železnica Pilatus je najstrmejša proga na zobato kolo na svetu. Vlak se vzpenja po gori Pilatus in spušča po 50-odstotnem klancu.
Str. 17- najvišja proga. Čez zasnežene travnike vodi pot vlaka, ki vozi po Qinghai-tibetanski železnici. Skopj polovica proge, dolge 1956 km, leži na višini 4000 m nad morsko gladino. Povzpne se celo na 5072 km.
Str. 24- na Škotskem je Robert Davidson že leta 1842 preizkušal vlak na akumulator. Nemški inženir Werner von Siemens je leta 1879 predstavil prvo praktično električno lokomotivo. Sprva so za napajanje podzemnih železnic in tramvajev uporabljali enosmerni tok (DC).
I got this from a book fair. I thought that trains were so cool but it turned out not to really be my thing, but It was a good and nice book with pictures and easy to follow sentences with easy-wording. Wasn't to in to depth which was probably better otherwise I would have probably just put the book down straight after buying it.
