"Tempted At Midnight" is the story if Emily and Logan.

In this conclusion to the Mayhem in Mayfair quartet, we meet our favorite Ladies from Literary Society of London again. The only unmarried lady remains our heroine, who finds herself intrigued against all odds by the common American businessman, the hero. She has always had a disdain for the common-man, but their paths cross as she goes on a romantic adventure after deciding to publish her very own paranormal romance novel. Ofcourse, during this journey they hash out their pre-conceived notions about each other and further ignite the burning attraction which has only increased since their kiss in the last book. The mystery element is provided by a killer who is trying to harm both of them, and the angst by a mystery ailment plaguing one of our favorites.

Overall, a satisfying conclusion to the series with an adorable epilogue.

I enjoyed this one. I really did. It was a sweet, tender love story about a lonely man, who found at last someone who can make him laugh and care for him. There was good chemistry between Logan and Emily, and I admit I thoroughly enjoyed their kissing scenes. I just expected more depth in Logan's character; I didn't feel I got to know him as well as I hoped. And in the end, it didn't have the angst or depth Juliane's and Carolyn's (books #3 and 2# respectively) had. A nice read for those who've read the previous books in the series, or for someone seeking a simple, sweet, uncomplicated romance that's swiftly read (and perhaps as swiftly forgotten?)

A very lighthearted historical romance from Jacquie D'Alessandro, "Tempted at Midnight" is the final book in her 'Literary Ladies Reading Circle' series. Four women who use an innocuous group title to read salacious stories...sound familiar my friends? Of course, we have it easy today compared with the daring of these four women!

Emily can't quite believe it. Her family teeters on the brink of financial ruin! Now they are looking to Emily herself to make a 'good' match, meaning marry money, to save the rest of the family. All Emily ever wanted was to marry for love. So she concocts a brilliant idea! She'll write a smashingly successful lady vampire novel, and use the proceeds to save her family. The only problem is, none of the publishers seem interested. Well then, Emily will make sure all the ton can talk about is a vampiress on the loose. Somehow, Emily never expected her plan to develop a few hitches...missing cloaks, handsome magnates, stolen kisses, and attempted murder?

Logan is rich...filthy rich. However, he's also an American. Yet he's finding that most of the ton are perfectly willing to overlook his roots in favor of his money. Except for Lady Emily, who seems to always look down her beautiful, snooty nose at him...when she's not kissing him that is. He knows she's up to something and he's darned sure going to find out what it is...

Emily and Logan were so funny to read about! Trying so hard NOT to think about each other, and then always finding themselves alone in libraries and ravishing each other! Ms D'Alessandro really stoked up the heat between these two and I had a blast laughing my way through their unusual encounters. I wasn't as thrilled with the secondary murder plot, but since it didn't take up much space, I can't complain too much.

Also enjoyable was the opportunity to read about the previous Literary Ladies and their lives and husbands. The short, but hilarious, epilogue involves all the couples and closes the book with a bang! (Yes, I did that on purpose.) If you're looking for a book that will make you think and ponder the meaning of love and life...um, you probably want to pass on this one. If, on the other hand, you're looking for a story that will have you laughing and fanning yourself..."Tempted at Midnight" by Jacquie D'Alessandro should be perfect.

Fourth and final book of a quartet. I loved the first book, liked the second, DNF the third, and found this fourth a disappointment.

The hero Logan was introduced 4 bks ago in NEVER A LADY and has been thrown at several of the previous heroines, only to end up a loser. Sad to say, his romance with Lady Emily was not worth the wait.

I dont usually like humorous books since humor is so subject but found JD's books charming and winsome. However, the JD charm failed to weave its magic here. Without it, I was very annoyed with the anachronisms and the IN-sane amount of interior monologue that the H/H both engaged in.

Wanted to give this book 2 Stars since it took 2 weeks for me to read but it did get slightly better toward the end.

Tempted at Midnight is the fourth and final installment of Jacquie D’Alessandro’s Mayhem in Mayfair series that ended up being a clean-sweep of perfection for me. This book follows our heroine, Emily, the last unattached member of the Ladies Literary Society of London, a book club comprised of four friends who enjoy reading salacious stories. She’s paired with American businessman, Logan Jennsen, who has been a part of the series since the beginning. These two shared what was presumably a steamy kiss in the library following their friends Gideon and Julianne’s wedding three months earlier and haven’t been able to stop thinking of one another since. The author had written a free short story detailing that kiss, but as she and her website seem to have disappeared, it’s no longer available. I was slightly disappointed by this, but didn’t necessarily find it to be a major detractor. I think she sufficiently showed Emily and Logan’s connection that began with that kiss. However, despite their intense physical attraction, they make adamant claims that they don’t like each other. Since Emily’s father is deeply indebted to Logan, she dislikes him and views him as nothing more than an uncouth colonial, while Logan has vowed not to marry an uppity, society miss, which is what he thinks Emily is. They both get an awakening when they discover hidden depths in each other, but they still fight their feelings until they simply can’t anymore. Logan has an old nemesis, though, who’s out to get him by taking away everything that means anything to him, which places Emily in a great deal of danger. It all made for another wonderful story in this series.

Emily has watched from the sidelines as her three closest friends have fallen in love and gotten married. She sees how much her friends’ husbands adore them, and she wants that kind of love for herself. However, since her father is so deeply in debt, she finds herself in the unwanted position of having to marry for money instead of love in order to save her family from financial ruin. She views Logan as part of the problem, because he’s one of her father’s creditors. In order to prevent herself from being forced into a loveless marriage, Emily comes up with a brilliant scheme. She’s written a story about a lady vampire, but thus far, no publishers are interested. So she decides to “market” the book by masquerading as a female vampire and making fleeting, mysterious appearances at society functions in order to get the ton talking, which she in turn hopes will fuel interest in stories about vampires and lead to her book being published. In the meantime, a few more chance meetings with Logan lead to more steamy kisses like their first and a deeper understanding of the man she hasn’t viewed as a suitable marriage prospect despite his wealth. Emily is a very spirited and stubborn young lady, qualities that serve her well in her quest to rescue her family from debt, but which also put up an obstacle to a potential relationship with Logan. At first glance, she seems rather stuck-up, but nothing could be further from the truth. She’s a kind, caring, compassionate person who deeply loves her family, is a loyal friend, and also desires to help those in need. Based on her previous appearances in the preceding books and her intense dislike of Logan, I wasn’t sure if I would like Emily, but I ended up really enjoying her as the heroine. She has understandable reasons for disliking Logan at first, and as the story progresses, she slowly comes around until she’s fully invested in a relationship with him.

Logan lost his parents at a young age and had to survive on the streets alone until a kindly mentor took him in and taught him everything he now knows about being a businessman. He’s worked hard to become a wealthy, self-made man, but his life is a lonely one with few friends to share it with and his idea of fun is making business deals. After kissing Emily that first time, she becomes a temptation that’s nearly impossible for him to resist, but at the same time, he thinks she’s nothing more than a shallow hothouse flower until he really gets to know her. Then he finds a woman who he grudgingly admits he’s starting to like, but he, too, can be very stubborn and blind to the feelings he’s developing for her. That all begins to change when Emily’s life is threatened multiple times, and each time, his heart nearly stops at the thought of possibly losing her. Logan was a wonderful man, who I ended up loving every bit as much as all the other heroes in this series. Like Emily, he has a kind, compassionate heart, and he takes his responsibilities very seriously. He feels accountable not only for the attacks against Emily but also for the loss of two crewmen on one of his ships. I like how Emily challenges him and shows him there’s more to life than business. She and her family also offer Logan all the love and affection that he’s been missing in his life.

All of the heroes and heroines from the previous books played a part in Tempted at Midnight. Sarah and Matthew (Sleepless at Midnight) are eagerly awaiting the birth of their first child. Gideon and Julianne (Seduced at Midnight) announce a blessed event of their own, while as a Bow Street Runner, Gideon is a great help to Logan in investigating the crimes that are being perpetrated against his interests and protecting those he loves. Carolyn (Confessions at Midnight) fears she is facing a serious health crisis similar to what took her first husband from her, and Emily is the only one in whom she can confide, keeping it from everyone else including her husband, Daniel. Then there’s Emily’s family members who make occasional appearances, most notably her mother and her younger siblings, along with the adorable family dogs. I greatly enjoyed the supporting characters and everyone added something to the story.

Overall, Tempted at Midnight was another wonderful book in this series. I’m not usually a fan of the enemies to lovers trope or of heroes and heroines who tend to stubbornly fight their feelings for one another, but here both were done quite well and didn’t irritate me. It was obvious from the beginning that Logan and Emily had strong feelings. It just took them a while to admit it. In the meantime, they heat up the pages with some scorching kisses and a good bit more in one scene. I loved the theme of them always ending up in a library alone together, which never fails to fuel their passion. If there was any weakness in the story, it was perhaps that Logan’s characterization could have been just a tad bit better explored, but even that didn’t really take away from my enjoyment of the book. It had all the feels that I’ve come to expect from this author and was the absolute perfect finale to the series, making me kind of sad that it’s over. Even though it appears that Jacquie D’Alessandro might have retired from writing, there are still many of her books left for me to read, and I’m definitely looking forward to continuing my exploration of her backlist.

Fourth Book in the MAYHEM IN MAYFAIR installment.

Emily Stapleford's family are in financial ruin she has to marry money to help them. Emily wants to marry for love and has a plan to get money by being an author. So she writes a vampire story and in order to get the ton interested and get it published she dons fangs cape etc and scares people at a ball. American Logan Jennson is filthy rich and can't forget the kiss Emily and he shared months back a kiss that Emily instigated, but now he is being followed and knows he is in danger. He enlists the help of his friend Gideon. While Emily and himself are sorting out their feelings for each other, his pursuer tries to hurt Emily to get to Logan.

I really enjoyed this book but have to say Emily and the vampire theme was too silly and I never felt the romance between Emily and Logan. It is a delightful read and as always with JD great banter. Maybe it is me and my expectations were too high because I seem to be in the minority with my 3 star rating. Overall one of the best series I have read in ages

BOTHERATION!!!!

THIS WAS HORRIBLE.

The ratings led me astray.

I know we all get in a funk sometimes, I look to these wonderful fluffy books to give my mind some time to restore itself after a heavy series and/or read. BUT OH MY! This was definitely not what I was looking for.

The number of time Ms D'Alessandro mentions Emily's damned lips drove me absolutely BONKERS.

About half way through the book I started skimming the inner thoughts of these silly characters and just started focusing on the dialogue to speed things along. Not to mention if I read about Emily's moist, kiss swollen lips for the fiftieth time I was going to throw the retched thing out the window. (Get my point?)

Lets keep this brief, since I've already ranted.

Our lady savior, Emily, is a wonderfully, absolutely, deeeeeee-lightful young woman with a *mysterious* twinkle in her eye (please try to remember this, but don't worry if you forget you'll be reminded only about fifteen more times), whose family is on the brink of financial ruin. GASP. In debt to no one other than Logan Jennsen (our handsome ruggedly, financially solid hero).

Emily with that *mysterious* twinkle in her eye, finds herself curious after reading a rather randy book about vampires and decides just sporadically to make-out with Logen. From there starts our GREATEST adventure.

Yup.

The book takes place all in all, in about four (?) possibly five days.

In this time you will experience frights from, but not limited to :

Pregnancy
Vampires(s)
Termial Illness
Fire(s)
Strangulation
Financial ruin
Gun shot wounds
and I'll throw this one in here.....love

So please, if you find yourself semi-sensible to the point where if you're told something five times and start to get irritated, take a pass on this book.

I know I want fluff, but I dont want to be WRTTEN TO AS IF I WERE FLUFF.

Tempted At Midnight
Written By: Jacquie D’Alessandro
Published By: The Berkley Publishing Group, 2009, First Edition, 336 pages, paperback
ISBN 978-0425226995

Tempted At Midnight is an adventurous, fast-paced, Regency era romance with a modern twist; vampires. Now before you start thinking that its cheesy, I can assure you that it is only a ruse; it is just Emily’s way to try to save her family from financial ruin. I can’t explain how it all works because I don’t what to ruin the story, but suffice it to say that all does not go as planned. This entertaining love story has various plot twists and a fascinating, in-depth plot. The internal dialog sometimes seems too heavy but I believe that it is to give the reader the necessary back story and helps move the story forward. The love scenes are so...

Jacquie D'Alessandro charmed my socks off with Tempted at Midnight. The story holds a twist, in that it's the heroine's family--instead of the hero's--that's penniless and is in need of new funds to replenish their coffers. The author's writing style also made this an easy and exciting read. I totally couldn't wait to learn how Emily's and Logan's romance would progress, and this kept me turning the pages. Oh, and midnight did play an important part in the story. But more than the characters per se, it's their interactions with one another that truly made this an unforgettable and charming and enchanting story for me.

I was going to give this book a 3 star, but there were some things that really irritated me and dropped the rating down to 2.

First of all, I would say this was my least favorite book of this series. It follows 4 friends in the London Ladies Literary Society who read scandalous novels. This book is about the last unmarried heroine in the group, Lady Emily Stapleford, and the last unmarried bachelor from the other books, Logan Jennsen.

I found this book the weakest in the series for compatibility between the Hero and heroine. It was almost like they were the last characters picked for the school softball team, so may as well put them together. I really thought Emily was a stuck up princess at first, disliking Logan because he was an "uncouth American" (and it's finally found out in this book that Emily's father owes Logan money). However, I did like her once she mellowed out around her family.

Logan was okay, but I liked him more in the other books as a secondary character. There was some good banter with Logan and Emily, but it just seemed less believable that he didn't have any interest in Emily until she kissed him. Then, it seemed that most of his interest was smexxual. After Emily returned to town from a 3 month visit to the country with her family, the romance started. What began as them being "enemies" moved, in the course of a few days or a week, into them realizing they loved one another. I suppose it could happen, but a greater space of time for them to interact and fall in love might have been more believable.

And moving on to the great mystery of who was the villain in the story that was going after Emily and accosting Logan was rather a let down in the end. The story starts out with a bad guy from Logan's past, who escapes jail after 10 years to come after him. Then comes suspicious sightings by Logan and attempts on Emily's life. One of my big annoyances was the red herring plot twist with Logan's "factotum" (I assume to mean his secretary). Throughout the book, Adam is seen as mysteriously being absent or late for "unknown" reasons. He even arrives for work with his hand bandaged the next day after Logan gets into a scuffle with a hooded guy. And when Logan brings his new wife (Emily) home to meet the servants, Adam is mysteriously missing due to a "stomach issue". Ooookay, so he wasn't a bad guy...or helping the bad guy???? Then, add something later to explain why the always punctual Adam was late and why his hand was bandaged the day after Logan gets into that scuffle. Umm, was Adam seeing a woman? If he is a character in another book, then give us a peek or SOMETHING!! The fact that the story ends with nothing more said or explained about Adam really ticked me off!

Then, the villain is finally revealed in the last 25+ pages. Yes, it was good to have other nefarious characters helping out because the villain is paying them off, but his dastardly actions are so brief and then, a few paragraphs had him trussed up like a Christmas goose before a quick explanation of what happened and why he's after Logan and Emily. After that, Gideon (who helped save the day) escorts the bad guy away and that's that. No fisticuffs between Logan and the villain...no fighting with the knife Logan had brought with him...no fight scene whatsoever. Very lackluster climax.

Another small annoyance...when the villain abducted Emily, she took her wedding ring off and let it drop to the ground for Logan to find so that he would know she was alive and had been taken by the villain. Yes, in the epilogue, it was mentioned that a footman had found the ring and it had been returned to her, but why even add it to the story if it hadn't been found before Logan and Gideon found out from another bad character that Emily had been abducted and where she was. It would have been better that one of them or a servant had found the ring first and Logan had been certain Emily was alive and had survived the fire the main villain set, THEN the hired bad guy could have made himself known.

It's small but annoying issues like these that dropped the rating. Oh, and the lack of smexxy scenes. After all the 🥵 scenes between Matthew and Sarah, Daniel and Carolyn...and to a lesser extent, Gideon and Julianne, Emily and Logan's smexx scene was so brief and mild that blink and you'll miss it. Their kissing scenes were far steamier than the actually smex scene. Plus, it was practically at the end of the book.

The most interesting parts of the book were the dialogue scenes between Logan and his unflappable butler with the dry sense of humor and between Logan and his buddies, Matthew, Daniel, and Gideon. I also liked seeing more of the previous characters.

Oh, and the whole vampire scenes with Emily dressing as a female vampire were eye rolling. So, what happened after the sightings?? Were there any more? Did the public ever find out the lady vampire wasn't real or did Emily give the lady vampire some sort of send off to appease the Ton? This book had multiple parts where things didn't get wrapped up adequately or have a real reason for a plot point.

Overall, this wasn't a terrible book by any means. I did come to like Emily in the end and it was nice that Logan finally found someone. The banter and dialogue between characters was entertaining, it just needed more steam like the first couple books in the series and the inconsistencies dealt with. I would recommend this book if you've read the other 3 books. And definitely read the other books in the series!

I almost didn't finish this one because the hero & heroine spent a good chunk of the book looking for reasons to dislike each other, to the point that it got annoying. I have to admit that I thought the whole female vampire ruse was kind of lame, too. But hoo boy, can Jacquie D'Alessandro write a steamy love scene that'll make you tingle! The ending made up for the characters' earlier stupidity, and I'm glad I read it because I had been looking forward to Logan Jennsen's story since he was introduced in earlier books.

Really enjoyed this book

I enjoyed the H/h and their friends found myself smiling and sometimes chuckling aloud. The villain that popped up was a little twist . I don't want to go into to many details but will say the story moved along at a nice pace and kept me engaged it's part of a series and I must admit I did not read any of the other books but enjoyed this one just the same

Wonderful end to a great series
5 stars

Lady Emily Stapleford is determined that she will only marry for love. Unfortunately, due to her family's dire financial situation, it looks like Emily might not have a choice in the matter. So she concocts a daring plan. She writes a story about a lady vampire and hopes that by selling it she will save her family from financial ruin and herself from a loveless marriage.

In order to create public interest, Emily whips up a frenzy as a mysterious vampire which has the ton all abuzz. Except for one person - Logan Jennsen. The mysterious and aggravatingly handsome American knows Emily is up to something and is determined to find out all her secrets. Unfortunately, he's got some secrets of his own that just might put the couple in serious danger.

This is the concluding book in the Mayhem in Mayfair series after Sleepless at Midnight, Confessions at Midnight and Seduced at Midnight. The same characters appear in all four books but the plot is completely separate so the book stands alone quite well.

I have been looking forward to Logan and Emily's story from the start of the series and this book didn't disappoint. I loved how the pair created sparks together and how they both were a bit confused by the fact that perhaps they didn't hate each other after all! There was great chemistry and lots of sensuality despite the number of love scenes being quite small.

The very minor mystery element was interesting and the whole story kept my attention and really made me want to keep reading the book until the very end without putting it down. If I had to make one criticism it would be that I didn't really understand the need for the snippets of the vampire book at the beginning of each chapter, but it wasn't offensive in any way and it didn't detract from my enjoyment of the story as a whole.

Overall, this was a funny, sweet, romantic and interesting story and one that I would definitely recommend. 5 stars.

This is another fun addition to the Mayhem in Mayfair series . It's has ridiculous situations and some danger and intrigue, but is very light. It has vampire story excerpts at the beginning of the chapters, which is quite fun. Although somehow it seems like some of that story is missing at the end, so I was a bit disappointed.

It was a solid end to the series. It didn't set me on fire like the others though, hence the 4 stars. I was SUPER scared that they were going to kill off Carolyn though so good on the author for that. I like it when characters from other books join in but I also prefer it when the timelines are a bit more stretched. These happening right on top of each other was a bit overwhelming.
