I'm so sad this is over! I really hope Meyer and Gilpin team up to tell more graphic stories set in the Lunar Chronicles universe.
After a bumpy start, the Lunar Chronicles books became such a huge guilty pleasure of mine and these graphic novels were a real pleasant surprise, too. I usually find that graphic novel companions to major series either a) retell the main story, or b) tell an uninteresting side story/prequel just to drain more money out of fans. But Wires and Nerve and Gone Rogue are a really engaging, funny and action-packed continuation of the series many love.
The art is not unattractive but is quite basic. I'm not saying this as a criticism but I thought readers who appreciate graphic novels for the art would like to know. These books are more about the story and the characters than beautiful art, and that suits me just fine.
Here, the diverse cast must team up to defeat Alpha Lysander Steele, a wolf hybrid who believes Cinder is withholding the cure to the wolves' mutations. All of our favourite characters make an appearance - from the ever-charming Captain Thorne to the sweet (with a bite) Winter - but once again this centers around the android, Iko.
There's even more delicious love/hate between Iko and Kinney, though it is actually the least romantic installment in the whole series. And when Steele recruits Scarlet's beloved Wolf, we are forced to wonder if all old allies can really be trusted. The book encourages pondering of the ultimate question this series has been alluding to from the start: what is it that makes us human? Aren't androids and humans all just wires and nerves, anyway?
Iko is both badass and likable. The plot is a perfect blend of politics, drama and humorous character dynamics. What's not to like?
Here it is, y’all: → a spoilery montage of everything I liked about this comic ← 🌷 Wolf wanting to propose to Scarlet as the opening of the whole thing and we already know this is going to be great 🌹 Wow I do so love the exploration of Wolf’s self-hatred! 🌷 Every time Iko comes on page 🌹 Iko kicking ass 🌷 Iko saying hilarious things 🌹 Iko’s outfits 🌷 IKO IN GENERAL 🌹 Thorne’s Good Side, a recurring thematic motif 🌷 Kai and Cinder being reunited oh my god 🌹 the kiss panel!!!!!!! 🌷 Iko’s sound programming 🌹 Iko wanting those butcher knives for hands 🌷 Kinney actually saying things that didn’t make me want to punch him in the throat 🌹 that bit where Winter dragged Steele on the talk show. That was truly iconic 🌷 “you haven’t the faintest idea of the torments I faced when the visions haunted me. In comparison, you’re not that scary at all. More like a stray puppy who needs a little love.” 🌹 Peony’s presentation on why Kai is the best 🌷 Small Iko fangirling over him was really funny 🌹 Iko is just? so beautiful? 🌷 that bit where they’re all super desperate and panicked and Thorne just switches off the broadcast and says “So, can we all start by agreeing that there is absolutely no way we are letting Cinder sacrifice herself to this psychopath?” 🌹 that panel where they’re all making plans together was so good 🌷 “I’m going with you.” “You’re not going with me.” “You think you can stop me?” –Scarlet and Cinder being the most supportive bffs 🌹 the article panel was the funniest thing ive read in my whole life 🌷 “‘the scar is just really hot,’” said one self proclaimed Lysander fangirl during an online group meeting” 🌹 “Many boycotters cite ‘fearing for their lives’ to be among their primary motives” 🌷 Cinder failing at calling Kai your imperial highness, as usual 🌹 Winter being a fucking icon always 🌷 “You are hardly the first hybrid soldier to threaten to turn me into a snack, Alpha Steele. Yet as you can see, I remain un-devoured. If your men are so hungry, maybe you should have made headquarters near a grocery store.” 🌹 Winter being super super loyal to Cinder oh my god!! 🌷 All of the comments Jacin has ever made 🌹 “My friends call me Cinder, so you’d better stick with ‘Your Majesty.’” 🌷 It’s our actions that turn us into monsters. Just as our actions determine our humanity. -Kinney being not hatable 🌹 Wolf BEING ON THEIR SIDE THE WHOLE TIME. A CINNAMON ROLL 🌷 the fact that it wasn’t even Cinder it was fucking IKO 🌹 “got any weapons?” “yeah. me” 🌷 “I was just kidding! Please don’t make me chase you!” 🌹 THORNE YOU HAVE TO HOLD THE SHIP STILL 🌷 “Really? You’re not even going to say hello? Or I missed you? Or I’m sorry I made you thing I’d joined forces with a psychotic egomaniac?” 🌹 “He should be kissing Cinder’s metal toes after all she did to get rid of Levana!” “I’d really rather he didn't” 🌷 Kinney’s character development 🌹 IKO’S DREEEEEEESSSSSS 🌷 Iko being an Ikon and making one of the most badass final speeches ever to final speech 🌹 THAT PLOT TWIST that I somehow did not see coming 🌷 Wolf being allergic to perfume? for some reason 🌹 “I’m not singing. She can’t make me” –Jacin turning down his gf’s singalong 🌷 “Hey! She might be an android, but that dress was really expensive!” 🌹 that RIDICULOUS and ADORABLE group hug 🌷 the mustache on Linh Adri 🌹 I’m so proud of Jacin and Winter. Doctor and Earthen Ambassador power couple 🌷 Scarlet proposed to Wolf??????? that’s so incredibly soft 🌹 okay listen. that last panel at the ball dance is so beautiful I’m crying. Cress dancing with Wolf for some reason? Cinder totally failing to dance with Jacin. Iko and Kinney’s sister staring at Scarlet’s wedding ring. Scarlet’s dress being beautiful. Kai and Kinney facepalming at one of Thorne’s ridiculous stories. it’s all so great and soft
✨ anyway I liked this much more than volume one and I think you will too. Definitely worth a read!
”You don’t need to be changed or fixed. You’re my alpha, always”.
Deciding to try out the Lunar Chronicles was one of the best reading decisions I ever made. Every single volume, every single story, every single character . . . all of them have been fantastic to go on a literary journey with. I think this is the perfect sci-fi YA series!
With the second volume of Wires & Nerve, the follow up graphic novel to the main book series continues. The main heroine of this story line, Iko, continues to help in the fight against the rogue wolf soldiers left over from Queen Levana’s reign. I love how all the characters we love from the series are back and they are used perfectly. Well, I could have used a bit more Thorne because he is hilarious, but I will give it a pass.
I still think the black and white art with blue shading is awesome. So unique and fun to look at. I will be looking for other graphic novels that use this format no matter what their story is – I just want to look at it some more. It is so simple, at times even impressionistic instead of precise. It is worth reading this two-volume series just for the art.
I just mentioned that this is a two-volume series. I get the impression from what I have read in some follow up research that this is the end of the Wires and Nerve story. Does that mean this this is the end of the Lunar Chronicles? I guess it could be based on how this one ends, but I really hope it isn’t!
Cinder fans – this is a must read when you are done with The Lunar Chronicles. Even if you don’t normally do graphic novels, you must try this out!
I really loved being back with these characters again, buuuuut... -Not enough Cress or Thorne. -Too easily wrapped up in the end. -A bunch of little plot points were left hanging, like:
I can't remember if those things were more fleshed out in the little epilogue in Stars Above, but I really feel like they should have been wrapped up here and not in a separate work.
Even though I didn't think this one was that strong on its own, it was still fun and enjoyable and I'd love more of these graphic novels.
Uuggghhhhh I feel exhausted from this. Please stop with graphic novels and coloring books! You are messing with my brain! You are snatching away my pencil and paper as I draw fanart! You are now saying my imagining of the characters are WRONG!
You don't realize how much these characters mean to me. They are being murdered slowly with every stroke of the pen by the artist. This coloring book and these graphic novels will be their gravestones and the pieces of my broken heart will fill the graves.
So grateful for these graphic novels tbh so I could read more about this crew!! I love them so much ❤️ A perfect ending to one of the best series ever 🔥
I FEEL LIKE I'VE BEEN WAITING 500 HUNDRED YEARS FOR THIS BOOK!!
No, really I have. HOWEVER, I was so freaking happy when I saw it on my kindle. FINALLY!
God, I've missed everyone in this wonderful lunar world!
Okay, I loved this book and I probably shouldn't have to type that out but I did. I mean.. come on. How could I not fall in love with book 2?
Iko is still a bad ass. Steele is still a crazy wolf hybrid in my mind and needs to stop thinking the worst of Cinder. CINDER AND KAI ARE FREAKING ADORABLE STILL. Wolf and Scar are also equally adorable. Sadly, I wanted more of Thorne and Cree. Can't forget my girl Winter, who I still love dearly.
The story flowed better than the first one. I think the drawing was a step down, like a little one guys. I still enjoyed ALL of this book. Oh, and I can't forget the steam rising between Iko and Kinney. Okay, little steam clouds because honestly I wanted more from them.
I'm sad it's over but super happy that it's on my kindle forever and ever. I will reread it over and over again.
Although the art could have been better, the story was superb! Iko is still in search of proving her humanity while saving people from the rogue soldiers. Lots of action and romance.
I really enjoyed this volume of Wires and Nerve, although I am very sad that there is nothing left to read of The Lunar Chronicles. This has become one of my favorite series, and this graphic novel only helped to cement that.
I love all these characters so much, and it was great seeing them all team up again. I also loved the conclusion of the story and how this story (and volume one) bridged the gap between the end of Winter and the novella Something Old, Something New.
I definitely recommend this for fans of The Lunar Chronicles.
Incredible!😍 It’s been a while since I read a book set in this world, and it feels so good to come back💜 I absolutely loved this new addition to the series, but it certainly left me wanting more! I wish she just decided to write more *cries in the Cinder and Kai’s weeding we deSERVE*
I am so happy! I can’t take Marissa Meyer enough for letting us have these wonderful amazing characters back for one adventure more.
It’s lovely, fun and full of heart. I loved seeing them again and I loved getting to know Iko better and I loved the new characters, everything was flawlessly executed and for everyone who loves Lunar Chronicles but hasn’t read these graphic novels.
I don’t know what the hell you’re doing! It definitely brings you closure and new perspective of the story you wouldn’t want to miss.
First Sentence:Almost a year has passed since we overthrew the wicked tyrant, Queen Levana, and crowned my best friend, Cinder - aka Princess Selene Blackburn - as the true Queen of Luna
A good end to the graphic novels. I expected a bit more action and a bit less inner struggles. Overall not bad, just I expected more.
This pains me to say, but though the writing was a 5, the art was a 2 at most, so all together I gave this volume a 3. I also think that some of the suspense with this volume doesn't work if you read Stars Above since you get to see the group with their HEA. So maybe it would have been better to just have the group dealing with things after [redacted ].
"Gone Rogue" is the second and last volume in "Wires and Nerves." This time Meyer does not just focus on Iko. She instead includes everyone in a better way than she did in volume 1. I still needed more Thorne and Jacin though. We do get more of Cress, Scarlett, and Wolf so that was an upside to this volume.
"Gone Rogue" has Iko and the rest of our Lunar Chronicles heroes trying to do what they can to stop a murderous group of bio-engineered wolves from wrecking havoc on Earth. They demand that Cinder reverses the procedures are they are taking out everyone. The leader of the group seems fixated on Cinder. I get why he's angry, but he's definitely taking it out on the wrong person here.
The writing as I said was great. The flow in this one was much better. You get to complete arcs in the chapters you read. And I have to say that the ending made me smile.
But as I said in the first volume, the artwork is lacking. Why does Winter have a terrible afro? Can you tell me why everyone has the same face? I think some pops of color would have dressed up the drabness of the color scheme and artwork. I know not everything can compare to Stephen King's The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger Born, but I kept comparing the two graphic novels and definitely thought that the later work is heads and shoulders above "Gone Rogue."
This was a lot of fun. Of course I could have done with eleventy billion more pages of Scarlet and Wolf, but whatever. As always, Iko kicked ass and took names.
**Huge thanks to Feiwel and Friends for providing the finished copy free of charge**
I loved seeing all of my favorite characters back together! I’m such a sucker for found family. Although, I didn’t love the illustrations in this one as much as the first one. Judgment is still out on Kinney, though. I want to like him, but I’m not sure whether I do or not yet.
I admit: I never had a real appreciation for Iko until reading the Wires and Nerve books. In the main Lunar Chronicles books, she is just Cinder's friend, but I love in these books that she is given some time in the spotlight. We literally get to see Iko and the other characters in their relationships, as well as friendships. These graphic novels are more than another story in the Chronicles; they are a testament to this crew. Talk about "Squad Goals"!
Moral of my story: if you haven't read these, READ THEM! I gave Vol. 2 only 3 stars, but Vol. 1 4 stars because I found more humor and pure enjoyment in #1. Volume 2 had its humor spots, its sweet spots, and its suspense...but I just prefer the first one.
I LOVED these graphic novels based around Iko. She's definitely my favourite character and I'm so sad this is the last one! I wish we could see Iko and Kinney's relationship develop more, they were just adorable <3 I prefer these way more than the actual series, so I highly recommend reading these if you have read the original 4 books.
It has been a few years since I read The Lunar Chronicles and the first Wires and Nerve, and this was a great reminder of how much I love this series.
There is just something special about Meyer's stories and the characters she creates. She has this knack for tapping into my inner child, the one who grew up loving Star Wars and who, very seriously, wanted to BE Princess Leia.
Sigh. I am so sad that I've now read the last in this series.
