American journalist Megan Mulcahey has come to England along with her father and younger sister to find out the truth about her brother’s death in a South American jungle ten years ago. They’ve been told the man responsible is Theo Moreland, Marquess of Raine, and she intends to find a position in his household so she can learn the truth.

Theo can’t help but be intrigued by his younger brothers’ new American tutor. He’s always felt the itch to travel again almost as soon as he returns to England, but that feeling dissipates with Megan’s arrival. Both Megan and Theo can feel the strange connection between them and it’s as enticing as it is terrifying, especially since Theo recognizes as the woman he saw once before, years ago, near death and in the midst of a fever dream. He’s not keen to let her go now, especially since he needs to learn why he keeps catching her skulking about his family’s home in places she ought not be.

I selected this book on a whim as I recently acquired a paperback copy and I’ve had the kindle version on my TBR forever, so I decided to finally read it on audio of course. I’ve only read a couple of books in this series and those have been all out of order, but that didn’t diminish my enjoyment of this one. This installment had more of a paranormal element than I had been anticipating, even having read those other books, and I think it really worked here. I would never have expected it, but this was a very appropriate read to start getting me into a fall mood and I loved how its moody atmosphere drew me in. Megan, the heroine, did frustrate me quite a bit with her insistence on maintaining her belief in Theo’s duplicity even after having met him and seen what his character truly was, but her willingness to listen to his side of the story and maintain an open line of communication allowed me to overlook this gripe. I enjoyed these two as a couple, though I do wish we’d gotten more on page time with them together after all truths are revealed and a bit more steam wouldn’t have hurt as I was just left feeling that their relationship solidified a bit quickly. Nonetheless, I still liked these two together and I enjoyed their story and their respective families.

Whilst I liked the main characters the story sort of lost me with the Shangrila type experience in the upper Amazon. A mixed bag for me

Series: The Mad Morelands #4
Publication Date: 1/15/18 by HQN Books (first published 7/28/2005)
Number of Pages: 432

The Moreland family is off on another wild and exciting adventure and this time Theo is the one at the center of things. Is he a murderer? Well – hang on to your hats and read the book to find out. The entire Moreland clan is on hand and it was fun to get to visit with all of them. There were wonderful visits with The Greats – twelve-year-old twins Con and Alex– who are featured in the next two books.

Theo Moreland, the heir to a dukedom, has always been a restless soul. He doesn’t know what he’s looking for, but he’s traveled all over the world and still hasn’t found it. He’s home in England, but he’s feeling restless and unsettled, yet he makes no effort to plan his next expedition. That is so unlike him.

Megan Mulcahey comes from a large Irish-American family. While they aren’t wealthy, they do well enough. Megan is a successful reporter and she had to work hard to get there and to be able to write the kinds of stories she does. The only cloud in her life is the fact that her brother, Dennis, died ten years ago in the jungles of South America. He was murdered and they know who did it – but he is an English Lord and there is nothing they can do – especially from New York.

One night, Megan’s sister, Deirdre, has a dream about their brother Dennis. She’s had these dreams all her life and her father knows that they are prophetic. Dennis appeared in the dream begging for help – he needed something very precious recovered. That dream set them off on a mission to find this English Lord, to recover the precious item that had been taken from Dennis, and to see that this English Lord gets his punishment.

Megan and her family soon decide that the best way to infiltrate the Moreland household and find proof against Theo, is for Megan to pose as a tutor for the young Moreland twins Con and Alex. Megan doesn’t actually expect, as a female, to be hired for the position, so she is shocked when the duchess offers her the position.

Megan doesn’t expect to like the Moreland family – and certainly not Theo. However, that is exactly what she does – she likes them all very much – and she’s strangely drawn to Theo. He murdered her brother; how can she possibly be attracted to him?

The investigation takes many twists and turns before the mystery can finally be solved and Megan and Theo finally get their HEA.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Too unrealistic overall and the “proof” she was looking for initially was beyond flimsy. Talk about going off half-cocked. Relationship development was also sorely lacking.

Me da igual, no tengo porqué disfrutarlo.

I thought An Unexpected Pleasure by Candace Camp, was a fun and enjoyable read. I am looking forward to reading the remaining books in this series. I received an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

Meagan Mulcahey's brother was killed in the Amazon. She is an American reporter and travels to England find the culprit and ruin him.

Theo Moreland, the Marquess of Rain, is deviated by the death of his friend. Little does Theo know that his friends sister has moved in to Broughton House to care for his younger twin brothers. Together Theo and Megan work to find out what really happened to her brother.

You will of course have to read the book to see what happens.

This book took WAY too long to read, considering it was (a) a historical romance (not generally terribly difficult) and (b) a Candace Camp, who I like more often than not. But I couldn't really get into it.

For as much STUFF that happened in the book - and there was plenty - I felt like it was just toooooooo long. Add in a typeface that was irritatingly large and old-style (something I never realized even could bother me) and a completely unlikely plot - unlikely couple, unlikely actions, unlikely paranormal bits - and I just couldn't really get behind it. I did enjoy the peripheral cast: the twins, the great uncle, the other ladies, etc. I just didn't care about the main characters. Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't the main characters the point of the book?

Anyways, I will still be reading Ms. Camp's other novels (LOVE the Bridal series!) but this one I'm lukewarm on.

In a series with far fetched plots, this is still the craziest of the lot. American journalist Megan infiltrates an English duke’s household by posing as a governess because she believes the family’s oldest son murdered her brother. Theo knows something is amiss with the new employee, and not just because he recognizes her. From a dream. Ten years ago. While he was nearly dying of a tropical fever.

Once again, Camp uses a mysterious other—in this case the deepest jungles of South America—to tell her tale of western people. I liked Megan and Theo both, but I found myself increasingly annoyed that a supposedly intelligent journalist was willing to believe a single source without independently verifying the facts of the alleged crime that led her to seek revenge on Theo.

**Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book.**

Falling in love with your brother's murderer?

Megan has hated a man for ten years. One that she's never even met. He's the one who killed her brother and got away with it. The time has come for her to travel to England and bring this lord to justice. When the opportunity to get close to the murderer presents itself, she jumps to impersonate a children's tutor and get inside the home. She just doesn't expect to be so enamored by the man who is supposed to be a cold killer.

Theo is stunned to meet Megan because he realizes he's seen her before. Her face has haunted him for ten years, after the vision of her brought him back from the brink of death. And though he's sure she is hiding something from him and his family, he can't help but be drawn to the mysterious woman. But even if he could convince Megan to trust him, there is a larger conspiracy going on that will take them both by storm.

I was excited to read Theo's story because he's been a bit of a mystery to me in the first few books of the series. He's the heir to the dukedom, yet he hasn't been around much so we don't really know him very well. And when I read the blurb for this book, I was immediately intrigued. A woman falling for her mortal enemy? Sounds like an enemies-to-lovers theme which I absolutely love. I was all in and ready to go.

And this book hit a lot of good spots for me. Theo was a charming hero with a mischievous side that made me smile. Even when he suspected something was amiss, he was just so smooth about it. I liked that about him. And Megan was heroine with a habit of getting caught in awkward situations. I swear I was laughing for the entire scene when they toured the duke's collection. Even when the pair were at odds, they had such a playful relationship.

I only wish that we had gotten to see things from Theo's perspective a bit more. This is a complaint I have about most of these books. We start off with seeing the story from both main characters' POVs and then it seems to shift so that we only really get the woman's side of things. I wanted to know what was going on in Theo's head as the story progressed. We got snippets of his thoughts but nowhere near as much as we saw from Megan.

And my other complaint is the repetition. And I actually mean from book to book. During the naughty scenes, the heroes always say the same thing and the bedroom scenes tend to happen in the same way. If you're reading the books as they come out, with some time in between each one, you may not notice this. But I'm reading the series one right after another so I've noticed the similarities. I hope the author will put more variety in the story in future books so it's less predictable.

In closing...
I'm excited to jump into Alex's story and see what trouble he gets into. 4.5 suns!

American Megan Mulcahey is convinced that English nobleman Theo Moreland killed her brother ten years ago. And now her sister is having dreams that her family believes that they should take revenge. Megan gets taken on as a tutor for the two youngest of the Moreland children, twin boys who get into mischief in every book of this series. She doesn't actually know as much as them in some subjects but she only needs to hang on long enough to find proof that Theo murdered Dennis. Unfortunately, she finds herself charmed by the family and falling in love with Theo.
The Moreland family is unusual and that means that Theo doesn't necessarily think that finding the tutor in his father's study means anything malicious. He is more amused than alarmed. It doesn't hurt that said tutor is beautiful.
It took me a little bit to get into this book because the beginning was just a little slow. I was pretty much considering a DNF at around the 80 page mark but read the last 30 pages and decided to wade through. And it was worth it. Most of the real story action starts about three-quarters of the way in but you need a lot of the slog to really understand what is going on. Like all of the books in the Mad Moreland series, there is a lot of mystical-type stuff going on but bringing that in is when the book really started to get good.

This was a quick read. And it was entertaining for me as well. The mystery part was somewhat believable and kept me intrigued till the end guessing away at scenarios.

Megan is an American journalist whose brother has been murdered and she is out to confront the killer and understand the motive. Theo, Lord Raine, is in line for his father’s dukedom and an influential peer in England. He has traveled all over the world and made a trek up the Amazon with Megan’s brother where he died. He is still wrecked by what happened then as well. Megan figures the only way to get inside to spy on Theo is to apply to be a tutor to his twin brothers. However, she finds a family who is warm open to forward-thinking view for women and general respect for everyone who works or lives in the house. And Theo... she is drawn to him in a way she can’t explain and Theo vice versa. The path they enter together is full of passion, heat and mystery. Saying goodbye to social class and rank they rally together after they have a heated argument. And nothing is the same again.

It was a fun romantic story. I liked the character development. There were believable in their actions and reactions.

Theo Comes Home

Theo, Lord Raine and heir to the Dukedom has finally returned home. After traveling the world he finds what was missing in the most unusual tutor that the twins ever had. Except she's really not a tutor but looking for vengeance on the man who killed her brother. And she thinks that man is Theo.

Shades of Lost Horizons! This is a complicated but interesting plot. Theo definitely has his work cut out to prove his innocence but that gets glossed over when she easily believes him first time he explains. This is after 10 years of hating him. Unquestionably proof then appears. Would have liked to see more actual struggle with this. The struggle is mostly internal with the heroine who is quite capable of story writing in her head without the use of facts. I would have liked more interchange with Theo. Yes there was Theo, but he didn't have a clue what was going on. Still deserves a 5 star. Great series. Reading in order isn't crucial.

Theo has been a mystery from the beginning, appearing mostly in the first book, Thisbe's book. After that, he's usually travelling and not there much. That is why I was eager to read his book.

I liked Theo, all the Morelands are very likeable and easy to enjoy reading about. Megan, on the other hand, I felt she was a little irritating and couldn't hold on to one opinion or thought. She is easily swayed.

The story itself was very unrealistic and did not have the paranormal quality like the previous books. The villain was obvious from the beginning and the death twist about the brother wasn't much of a surprise either.

Overall, it was an OK book, could've been much better tbh.

As the other books, the best characters are always the 'Greats', the twins, and the other Moreland siblings.

I can't wait to read the next book. It was nice to see Alex and Con since the first book, where they're only 3 years old, now full grown adults. I'm excited.

Another wonderful Mad Moreland Read! Megan and her family believed Theo Moreland killed her brother 10 years ago while they were in South America. Know after her sister Deidre has a dream where Dennis comes to her asking for help they believe it is time Theo paid so they head from New York to England to find proof. Megan is hired on as the twins tutor and she hopes she will find proof of Theo’s miss deeds. Theo is still anguished after 10 years he couldn’t bring his friend home after he was killed. Never would he have thought that the terror twins New tutor is the woman from his dreams 10 years ago. A fantastic read with a few plot twists.

Historical romance with paranormal twists and incredible turns.

Long before they actually meet, the two main characters see each other in a dream. And it is another dream that Leads the heroine cross the Atlantic to come to London and find out whether the hero murdered her oldest brother.

The end was so unbelievable, that it hurt my intellect: the heroine single-handedly rescued everybody, the mystery about her brother‘s death was solved and nobody got harmed. 😖

I don’t think I will read the other books in these series.

Megan and her father and younger sister go to England to confront the killer of her brother 10 years previously. Megan is a newspaper reporter in New York and is familiar with uncovering the truth. She takes a job with the Moreland family so she is close to Theo, the oldest son, who is the scoundrel.
She didn't expect to be attracted to Theo or to like the family so much.

I really enjoyed the book but toward the end, it got a little over the top with the supernatural. Still an entertaining book and I will read more.

This one just fell flat for me, I liked the characters first meeting in a fevered dream the hero has during a jungle illness. But the secondary story about the heroine's murdered brother who turns out to be alive and spouting babble about a fountain of youth. I can buy the connection between the two main characters but the secondary story led me to skipping ahead. Better luck next time at least there are more books in this series.

Megan is to stupid to live and my suspension of disbelief couldn’t handle the idea of her as a muckraker as she continuously makes idiot decisions with no backup plan or forethought (choosing to snoop when everyone is home because when they are gone she can’t be sure when they will get back…wtf… and then not having any plan b or lie ready everytime she gets caught) I really genuinely hated this book in an otherwise fun and easy series

Actually enjoyed this more than I thought I would. After her brother's death Megan believes an English nobleman needs to stand trial for murder. She travels from the United States to England and takes a position as a tutor to the youngest members of the family trying to find evidence of his involvement. The longer she stays with the family the more she likes them and the less likely she believes the man is guilty, so the question is who has been lying to her?

This was a fast paced, fun and entertaining book. This was actually the first book that I have read by this author, also this was the last book in the Moreland saga. I really enjoyed this book and will look for the other three books to find out about the other characters. I kind of figured out some of the plot line, the characters were all interesting and complex. Theo was a hubba hubba.

The story of Theo and Megan is a romantic mystery with a paranormal element. It's not your usual love story. And that's what I liked most about it. It's a refreshing change from the mainstream reads. And you can't help but fall in love with the characters. If you like to read something different give this book a try. You won't regret it.

Enjoyable. I actually called the twist pretty early on. I do feel like the set up went on for a bit. I did really like Theo and Megan though (even though the last book I read heroine's name was also Megan and it confused me several times, but I just had sinus surgery and I am on drugs, so that did not help).

Theo Moreland & Megan Mulcahey's story was heartwrenching. Based on a lie, she is determined to make the wrong person pay for a crime he never committed. Blinded by guilt & grieve, he misses the hidden clues that could reveal the truth. Together they will overcome all obstacles to revealed the truth. Highly Recommended. Happy Reading!

Am I the only one who find it ridiculous that the heroine just took somebody's word that the hero was a killer, even after meeting set killer and his family liking everything about him.

Also she had the B*lls to get mad at him when she was the one deceiving everybody .

As for the hero, he never question the heroine and just cover for her because she was so likable. SMH.

Male protagonist is weak and a terrible strategist (he plays no role except a bungling one in saving the female protagonist and her niece from mirder). He loves this rather boring Irish American female protagonist, who he has known for a week, so much he offers to abdicate his dukedom. Good grief. I moved to historical novels to escape feminized men but they followed me here.

I can’t decide if the story in this book is more or less ridiculous than the stories in the prior books in this series. The series is a strange mishmash of regency romance, thriller, and supernatural mystery. It does not hang together. But it is still a fast and enjoyable read.
