Today, you might find Elaine Schulte at the gym, observing from the sidelines as young gymnasts take their first tumbles on the balance beam. Tomorrow, she might be sitting a few rows from a stage, watching as kids audition for Christian theater.
When you find Schulte, you'll notice she's holding a pen in one hand and a notebook in the other. Whatever kind of book she's writing whether historical fiction, a book for preteens, or an adult novel she feels that research is necessary to create an accurate, relevant story. "I do a lot more research than you'd think," says the author of 27 novels.
Just like when I read this book several times in my teens, I cherished this story and its beautiful hope-filled messages. Louisa was a character I could root for with her charm, naïveté, and dreams of being a seamstress and having a solid, healthy romance. My heart broke for her on more than one occasion, yet I grinned to see her learning to slide closer and closer to God as her journey progressed.
This adventure took lots of twists and turns. I liked that it started in Virginia and worked its way through a couple of oceans as well as countries until arriving in the California territory. The things that happened along the way were wonderful plot points that felt organic to the story. They ramped up the tension and stakes each time too.
With heart-deep stories like this one, it’s no wonder the California Pioneers series is one of my favorites of all time.
A cousin of the Talbot's is in a very abusive marriage. To escape him Louisa decides to travel by ship to California to her uncle. At the office to purchase her ticket she meets Jonathan who helps her get away and goes with her to California. It is not the easiest trip since they decide to take the passage through Panama.
Elaine Schulte's vivid descriptions of the voyage by clipper ship, the shipwreck, the journey through the Panama jungle & living in a San Francisco mining town during the height of the gold rush brought the story to life as Louisa flees Alexandria to make a new life with her Talbot relations who now live in California.
And Jonathan - what a hero! I fell in love with him!
This is #3 in the California Pioneer Series
#1 - Journey to California by covered wagon. #2 - Journey to California by clipper ship going round Cape Horn. #4 #5 #6
This series is Christian Historical Fiction. There are five books in the series, and basically they can stand alone. I enjoyed the fact that each book is individual but there are central characters thru out the series. This the saga of a Christian man that has established a lucrative business in California catering to the new settlers and the miners that are seeking gold. Being a fast and easy read I was done in less than two weeks with all five books. I also enjoyed the fact that this was light reading because I had been reading some books with dark themes. Hope you will pick up these titles if you need a break from other reads you are doing, or just for some informative history.
