I keep my favorite tools in my little red toolbox. Tools help me make things. Before I start building, I always draw a plan of my ideas with my pencil. I measure the lines with my ruler to get just the right size.
A pencil and an 8 inch ruler can be lifted out of their slots (like a puzzle piece), and there's a 'magic' writing tablet (erases by lifting the cellophane). This page shows the most wear -- the cellophane doesn't hold up well and the point of the pencil collapses.
The other tools mentioned are a saw, a drill, a screwdriver, a wrench, and a hammer.
1- I love this book because it is a book of tools. If I want children to learn about tools, this book offers different tools for them to learn about. This book is great for both genders. The book is all hard cover, including the pop out pictures of tools.
2- Children will respond with excitement when they see we are learning about tools. While reading this book, I will get each tool out and demonstrate to them what are they for. I even can give them turns to help me out.
This book talks about all the things you find in a tool box. Some aspects are pop up/lift the flap and some parts of the book actually come out. It's a great interactive book for the kindergarten crowd made out of very strong cardboard with an accordion spine. It you're looking for something original and different I'd highly recommend this one. There's another called "My Little Red Fire Truck" that's equally as good.

Brief Book Summary: This book goes through the different tools that would be found in a toolbox. It walks through the different steps for constructing a project, like making a plan and using the different tools. All of the tools are removable from the book so children can actually pretend to cut wood, or hammer nails.
Professional Review #1: My Little Red Toolbox by Stephen T. Johnson (Harcourt, 2000) is an oversized board book your little ones will love. Each page features a tool that lifts out of the book like a giant puzzle piece. Word count: 37 Copyright Early Years, Inc. Apr 2001
Professional Review #2: Hand-size tools punch out of this sturdy book and really work. There are screws to turn with the screwdriver, bolts that turn with a wrench, a board to saw in two, and a ruler and pencil for measuring. This book keeps all three of my little boys busy! And it holds up to their use! (It's almost too good to be true.) 2000, Harcourt Brace & Company, $14.95. Ages 3 mo. to 8. Reviewer: C. Leonard-Schmidling SOURCE: Parent Council Volume 8
Response To Reviews: I agree with these articles; they are both very positive about the book. This book is very interactive and would definitely keep children engaged. It is also a very sturdy book which is very fitting for the construction theme.
Evaluation of Literary Elements: The tools in this book were designed to give children some experience working with tools. It is important to get children familiar with working with tools. The book also teaches children how to count, the pages say "one piece of paper" or "two pieces of wood."
Consideration of Instructional Application: This book would definitely be great in the classroom, kids would definitely love using the different tools in the book. I think they could do projects and construct something with different tools. I think it would also be important to practice safety with these tools.
