Ireland: True Stories of Life on the Emerald Isle

Rate this book
Revealing the heart and soul of a nation known for ample supplies of both, Travelers' Tales Ireland whisks readers away to the land of green hills and misty skies, Dublin pubs, and chiming church bells. Here are accounts of kayaking among fog-shrouded islands, strolling timeless Donegal, poking around mossy ruins, drinking whiskey with shiftless bards, and even witnessing a murder in cold blood. One of the oldest and richest cultures of Europe, Ireland has long held interest for travelers and readers. This diverse array of essays offers fans of Eire a satisfying glimpse inside cottages, country fairs, dances, and even an irreverent catechism lesson among rowdy schoolgirls.

I finished this collection of 44 short stories and essays about Ireland: chock full of details of the challenges, history, people, landscapes, culture, and the ever-present Guinness.

Some of the moments that are sticking with me:

Irish dancing: “it was as if we were all members of a team in a contest and our team was winning…I have to say that we were beside ourselves with joy.”

Boats: “the waters of the Shannon River seemed as muddled as my life had become. The failure of my business, marriage and life skills clung like bad breath.”

Tying your boots: “the one trying to tie his boots…the one on a quest”

Family: “suddenly I realized that to them I wasn’t some distant relation…it was as if I had stepped out for just a moment and come back in, not that I had been gone an entire generation.”

The pub: “a pint is as much ritual as drink.”

The stories: the best. (1 example in photo)

Meaning: “whenever I become frustrated with life’s pace, I consciously slow down to remember the journey to the stone semicircle of Dun Aengus.”

And so much more…a fine day and way to celebrate the Emerald Isle. 💚
