She shuts the door behind her, relieved to be in the safety of her own home. But tonight her house is the most dangerous place she could be. Someone has been waiting for her, and they know she’s home alone…
Sasha loves her job finding accommodation for homeless people, and she’s proud of the small but cosy apartment she rents on the good side of town. She’s worked hard to leave her dark past behind her and make amends for the accident that still haunts her memories. She knows she was innocent, though she’s still careful about who and what she tells of her old life. But not all secrets stay hidden forever…
When her phone rings loudly in the middle of the night, Sasha fears what she’ll hear when she picks up – a deathly silence. It’s happened every night for weeks. Is it a childish prank, or a chilling warning that someone has uncovered her secret?
But the news of a body found at a local shelter means her worst nightmare has come true. It can’t be a coincidence that evidence related to the victim has been found at the same location where the most devastating moment of Sasha’s life took place.
Days later, a second body is found and Sasha’s heart pounds wildly as she takes in the victim’s unforgettable green eyes. She hasn’t seen her in a long time, but she’d know her old friend anywhere. She was the only other person who knew Sasha’s secret, so how can Sasha prove her innocence now?
Sasha doesn’t know who’s coming for her, but she’s certain of one thing: she’s next on the list…

Many thanks to both Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review an early copy of Their Cold Hearts.
This 13th book in the Detective Gina Harte Books is the first I've read. It switches primarily between the point of view of Detective Harte and Sasha Kennedy, who is a housing officer. After a resident in a community house for the unhoused is murdered, Sasha, too, starts being targeted and has no idea why. Then there is the point of view of Macie Perrin, an 18-year-old girl who cares only about her crime/ghost blog, becoming famous, and who is ultimately contacted by the killer.
Reading about the unhoused who need a helping hand, or the frustration and angst felt by housing officials who are unable to do more to help them, made my heart hurt.
I absolutely loved Gina when she was in Detective Mode. But when she wasn't? The personal decisions she made pertaining to her daughter and granddaughter drove me batty.
There is a huge number of readers who adore this series but I just can't see myself becoming one of them. If the books contained just information about Gina Hart, the detective? Yes! But I don't care to read any more about her personal life.
But give this series a try. The number of readers who love this series FAR outweighs the few who don't. You may love it!
"Someone is watching you...they know your secret..."
We're back with DI Gina Harte who is very much looking forward to spending time with her granddaughter Gracie while her daughter Hannah is taking a much-needed holiday in Paris with her partner. However, as luck would have it, in the midst of building a den with Gracie she receives a call to brutal murder scene...despite being booked on holiday leave. Gina is torn. She knows this will cause yet more friction between her and Hannah, after finally gaining her trust back, and yet she cannot let a murderer remain loose on the streets of Cleevesford. So she accepts the case and leaves Gracie in the capable hands of her boss and on-and-off-again lover DCI Chris Briggs, who later informs Gina that Gracie has had the the best time having dressed up in an oversized stab vest sporting a police had and arresting half of the relief. But none of that will wash with Hannah, Gina knows, but resolves to face that later. Right now, she has a killer to catch.
The body of a homeless man, Wesley Reid, has been found in the hostel in which he has been staying by one of the other residents and soon everyone staying in the Cleevesford Cleaver want to be relocated - NOW! But there is little anyone can do with no space available, which is what Sasha Kennedy faces daily in trying to find suitable premises for those who need it. Sadly, there are never enough rooms or flats available and the homeless community is endless. But Sasha does her best with what little resources she has...sometimes even paying for a hotel room for the odd one on occasion out of her own pocket. She just wishes there was more that she could do.
When Sasha recognises the murdered man she begins to wonder if the past is coming back to haunt her. Particularly as she has been targeted by a youth on an electric scooter outside her own flat with the odd flat tyre, messages pushed through her mailslot and more recently a written message in graffiti in one of the older buildings set to be reopened for community housing.
"I will make you pay."
Meanwhile, 18 year Macie Perrin is a true-crime YouTuber wanting her own fifteen minutes of fame. She gets herself caught up in the mystery and finds herself talking directly with the killer. She is so excited that this will mean big things for her! But is she getting in over her head?
And then there is Gina. When a second victim is discovered, her team are busy trying to find the common thread linking them with so few clues. A one pound coin and the smell of burning sage.
"When is a pound not a pound or a herb not a herb?"
Added to all this is her dilemma with Gracie. She is meant to be looking after her and, despite the whale of a time Gracie is having with her colleague's wife Mrs O, her greatest fears are realised when her ex-mother-in-law sees her working when she should be looking after Gracie...and is on hand to swoop in and take over when Hannah gets wind of it all.
This series has always been one of my favourites and I've always loved the camaraderie between Gina and her team. There is a hint of what went on before between her and Briggs, their on-and-off relationship once again seemingly lingering in the background, though Gina is far from forgiving of Brigg's past behaviour and to be honest I can't say that I blame her in this instance. And then there is Hannah. That girl got on my nerves in the early part of the series and finally I thought we were past all that. But no. One wrong move and she is quick to judge her mother once again, forgetting all the sacrifices "she" made as a single mother for her laying all the blame squarely at Gina's feet. And still, after placing Gracie in Hetty's care she STILL blames Gina for what happened! Yet Hetty was the one who supposedly had care of the child! That really annoyed me and I'm so peeved at Hannah who really cannot give her mother a break. Ever. And Gina? She knew how Hannah would react so why did she take the case? She was on leave. She was entitled to that leave so why just say "thanks but no thanks"? Because Gina must single-handedly bring down all of Cleevesford's killers, no matter what. Sorry Gina, but family come first...always.
Although I thoroughly enjoy this series, I admit to being completely frustrated by the behaviour of some of those once again...for reasons I state above. That aside, this is one of the best series out there and I can't wait to see what's in store for Gina next. I hope she gets her personal life sorted between Briggs and Hannah's bad attitude.
Overall, a good solid thriller and addition to the series but it is recommended, if coming in late to the party, to start from the beginning to appreciate the characters and the series in full...complete with the underlying backstories.
I would like to thank #CarlaKovach, #Netgalley and #Bookouture for an ARC of #TheirColdHearts in exchange for an honest review.
Back with Gina & the gang in book 13. Gina’s taking a few days off to be with her granddaughter, when she gets a call to attend a murder scene. Gina does not have the ability to walk away when there is a killer on the loose. Of course, her daughter will only use this against her. Hannah is my least favorite character in this series. She’s so ungrateful, rude, never lets Gina explain anything, so quick to judge….I just want to slap her! Anyway…..Gina & the other characters are why I read this series, & they don’t disappoint in this book. Another mystery, another murder, & a new investigation. Definitely best to read them in order.
Their Cold Hearts by Carla Kovach is the 13th in the Detective Gina Harte series.
First, let me thank NetGalley, the publisher Bookouture, and of course the author, for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
Series Background: (Warning – Contains spoilers from previous books) DI Gina Harte works homicides. Her team consists of: DS Jacob Driscoll, DC Harry O’Connor and DC Paula Wyre, with a lot of assistance from PC Smith and PC Kapoor. Gina is a stubborn lady, and a determined detective. She has had a rough life, which has led to an uneasy relationship with her daughter Hannah and grand-daughter Gracie. It has also led to a lack of real friends. She used to have a relationship with her boss, DCI Chris Briggs, but he found someone else. It is not common knowledge that Gina's husband was abusive, and only Briggs knows that she did not save him when he fell to his death many years ago.
My Synopsis: (No major reveals, but if concerned, skip to My Opinions) Sasha Kennedy is a support worker for the homeless community. One of the men that she just placed in an apartment has been murdered in his room. When she eventually realizes who he is, and who the second victim is, it may be too late to save herself. The past is coming back to make her pay.
Meanwhile, 18-year old Macie Perrin is doing a true-crime podcast, and finds herself working directly with the killer. She is so excited!
Gina and her team are trying to find the common denominator between the victims, but it's tricky. One of the few clues is a one pound coin found on or near the bodies.
Meanwhile, Gina is supposed to be looking after her grand-daughter while Hannah finally takes a vacation. With this case, that is not going entirely to plan.
My Opinions: I thought the last book was great. This one is too!
This book really looked at issues facing the homeless as well as the overall lack of funding and availability of housing. It also looked at the problems social workers face while trying to help them.
The book also dealt with Gina's troubled relationship with her daughter and how outside influences are jeopardizing it.
The plot and writing was really good with a few twists thrown in. The chapters alternated between a few of the characters, and that worked really well. The characters, as always were deep.
Can't wait for Book 14!

She shuts the door behind her, relieved to be in the safety of her own home. But tonight her house is the most dangerous place she could be. Someone has been waiting for her, and they know she’s home alone…
Nothing better than a new book featuring one of my favourite detectives Gina Harte and her team, always makes me smile. Carla Kovach is one of my go to authors, if a book has her name on it I automatically buy it and to be honest I have never read a book of hers I did not like.
There are some great characters you will meet along the way that definitely do the story justice. Sasha works with the homeless, she loves the work she does but she is also hiding a secret. A body is found at one of the local shelters in the area and it is like the world is now crashing down around her.
We also have another character Marcie, 16 years old and full of optimism and energy. She runs a crime podcast and is quite immature, then again weren't we all at 16. She is following Gina's case and she herself becomes quite involved with killer, how will this end up for her? You will need to read the book and see for yourself. Great action throughout the whole book, once again the story really draws you in and I read it in two sittings. I would highly recommend this book, thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an advanced copy. All opinions are my own. 5 starts
Another MUST READ in this gripping and very addictive series. I devoured this book in one sitting tapping my kindle like a demented wood pecker. Full of twists and turns and so emotional. Wonderful storytelling and fantastic characters. Go to bed early and read this book I promise that you will not be disappointed. Loved it!!!!! Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC.
Their Cold Hearts by Carla Kovach I give this book 4.25 stars
She shuts the door behind her, relieved to be in the safety of her own home. But tonight her house is the most dangerous place she could be. Someone has been waiting for her, and they know she’s home alone…
Book 13, can be read as a standalone. This is a brilliant police procedural series with a well written narrative.l love to catch up with Gina and her team on their next case and Carla always manages to do this without overshadowing the investigation. An engaging and clever plot line combined with the twists and turns and great pacing ( no spoilers from me) By the end of the book the threads are satisfyingly pulled together. If you enjoy crime thrillers give this series a try! With thanks to Carla Kovach,Netgalley and Bookouture for my chance to read and review this book
My Review: Another fantastic book in this fantastic series. This series is one of my favorites and so is this author. I can’t say enough good things about either of them. What I love most about these books are that I am so invested in all the characters and their lives. I feel like I know each of them personally and I would want them as my friends in real life. They all work so well together too and each of their personalities are just right so they balance each other out so well. This is what makes them awesome detectives. You have to have a group of people like this to make the job easier and to catch the killer. Enough of the characters and on to the plot. Who doesn’t like a good killer who done it book where the bodies keep adding up. I know I sure do. I love trying to figure out who did it and why. The why is just as important as the who. I’m often surprised by the end because I could never figure it all out. I get mad at myself because I know the author gave out little hints throughout the book but I never could catch on. That’s ok though, I love surprises. It’s like Christmas Morning every time I read one of this authors books. Now let’s talk about that shocking ending. Never would I have guessed it in a million years. This whole book had my head spinning with all the twists and turns. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough with this one. Every chapter left me wanting more. Carla Kovach thank you for being such a great author and thank you for bringing this series into my life.
In conclusion, the plot, the characters and all the twists in this book made this book an enjoyable read. I would definitely recommend it and happily give it 5 Hearts❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this book
when you shut your front door you should feel safe but sasha doesnt....she already gets phone calls at night and now that feeling of safety is gone
her job should give her the feeling of satisfaction but it doesnt...everyday she has to face abuse from her clients who she tries to find homes for but sometimes she has to leave them in conditions that are unliveable...
and then her nightmares really start when the first body turn up....
Detective Gina Harte is very much looking forward to spending some one-on-one time with her granddaughter Gracie while her daughter Hannah is away. However, when she is called about a murder scene, she is torn. She already knows this will cause friction between her and Hannah, but she quickly decides to focus on the case, leaving Gracie in capable hand.
A homeless man has been found murdered. Sadly, he is not the only one and soon there is a second victim. Gina and her team work quickly to find the connection between the two. All while Gina and her team are working hard to try and determine who is preying on the homeless, she has other issues that are crowding her thinking. Meanwhile, there are other characters in this latest book in an exciting series that play a role as to what is happening. There is Sasha, a concerned social worker. Then there is a teen named Marcie, a true crime podcaster who will go to any lengths to be involved in the case.
What another exciting book Carla Kovach has gifted to her readers! The tension never lets up, especially when Gina works hard at juggling all the aspects of her life while the author shines a spotlight on the sad plight of the homeless. I couldn’t tap the screen on my Kindle fast enough as I was trying to guess the killer. Ms. Kovach has always snagged my attention with Gina and this series, while always leaving me more than eager for the next book in this stellar series.
Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
Knowing there’s a new Gina Harte book is like waking up on your birthday to presents, not knowing what you’re going to get but once opened it’s everything you wanted and more!
Again. a beautifully written heartfelt dedication, if you’re new to Carla Kovach books make sure to read these as they are always relatable and relate to the storyline.
As always a great start with the prologue that stirs up your intrigue and opening chapters that make you curiouser that you don’t want to stop reading.
This is another great instalment to the series, the characters were well developed and a had great balance of backstories to accompany the primary crimes.
I especially loved fame hungry 16 year old Marcie who didn’t shy away from putting herself in danger. We got to see more of the secondary story this time and the relationship between her daughter and granddaughter. I love this parallel storyline as it really pulls Ginas work and home life together as you get to see how hard the work and home life balance is so unpredictable. I feel a confession coming in further books is needed for some home truths for Hannah.
The current world is a scary one with the cost of living crisis which this story brings to the forefront due to the storyline centring around homelessness. It is told in a sensitive way via the stories of people down on their luck in life.
Once again another outstanding addition to a fabulous series!
Another brilliant book in this great crime series. Gina is taking some time off to look after her granddaughter but a dead body means she is called into work. Briggs says he will take care of Gracie but Gina is worried that her daughter won’t be happy with the arrangement. She’s right to be worried as someone is keeping tabs on her and won’t hesitate to cause trouble. Alongside this, Gina has another death to investigate and soon has her hands full. This is a great crime thriller and has lots of layers to the story. I enjoyed reading it as it unravelled and did not work out who the killer was. This is a brilliant series that I’d highly recommend. Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
Firstly I was pretty mad at Gina for leaving her grandchild with people not known to the mother of the child, but I have serious trust issues.
I was pretty grateful for my back pain this past weekend because it allowed me to read this compelling book. The twists and turns, the guessing game of whodunnit kept me on my toes. The slight 'stalkerish' aspect was super creepy (but in a good way) Told in multiple POV and the unknown killer's POV too gives great perspective on the story line.
As always Carla touches on some real life topics, this time housing crises and homelessness and I finish her books having learned something.
This is book 13 in the Gina Harte series and I'm so keen to keep reading this series because as mad as she mad me in this book I want to see where her story goes.
i love this series! but man - i wish she would just have Gina tell her daughter off! so sick of her selfishness and how everything is her mothers fault and quick to judge her and make her the villain with everything... she needs to be smack (several times)! i was so happy her and briggs got back together at the end :) can't wait for the next book in the series!
Gina is one dedicated detective and investigator. But she sacrifices her family again and again for her job and this time May just be the last. The mystery is fast paced, chock full of action and suspense. Kovach always weaves the story strands so well. I may be too critical about Gina, but I knew Instantly when she made a decision early in the story that she would pay mightily for it. And she did. However, she made the choice and now she reaps the consequences, The world is a harsh, very lonely place, and her career is her one sole companion. I hope she is able to mend the rifts she created with her choices. Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for the early copy.
I do love the Gina Harte series and this is book 13. The story revolves around a hostel for the homeless and Sasha who runs it. Dead bodies aplenty, and strange goings on. The bodies have been covered in cider and there is a smell of sage when the bodies are found. DI Gina Harte must find the killer before more bodies turn up. I do like the way Carla Kovach writes and she makes the characters real, even though the plot is sometimes a little far-fetched.
The more this series goes on, the harder it is to review each new instalment because I’m sure I repeat myself by saying how fabulous the character development is, how fresh, relevant and exciting each new story is, and also how brilliant it is to reunite with Gina Harte. It’s no surprise to hear that I loved this one just as much as the ones leading up to it and yet again, can not wait to see how things develop with certain characters (no spoilers) in the next book. If you love a good crime thriller series, and you haven’t tried this one yet, I’d highly recommend you do.
Their Cold Hearts #13 Gina Harte series An excellent new installment in what is an epic and underrated police procedural series. I read this one in a single sitting. When I first picked up #1 in this series, I knew I was onto something awesome and proceeded to devour the entire series up to this most recent release. I can’t wait for the author to write more. After 13 books you would have thought this one would lose pace or start to lag but somehow the author manages to keep our attention and the series fresh and exciting with each new book. I love Gina Harte as a character, especially that she is a grandmother! You don’t see that often for a lead in a crime novel. I’d recommend starting the series at the beginning (as its just really good) but there is no reason why you couldn’t jump straight into this book if you don’t want to read the rest.
So glad to be back with Detective Gina Harte and all her colleagues I love them all I just wish I could say that about her daughter who is awful.
It starts with a murder at the homeless shelter of a man called Wes who is an alcoholic as the the death count goes up there are so many suspects there is no way you would guess who the murderer is Detective Gina Hart certainly has her work cut out it was very exciting and I found it hard to put the book down I was hooked after the first page can’t wait for the next one to hear what happens next for Gina and Briggs.
Detective Gina Harte has taken some annual leave, her granddaughter, Gracie, is staying with her, and they're having such fun. When the phone rings, Gina isn't sure she should answer it but can't quite help herself. A crime scene is no place for a child, but a man is dead, and once again, her job takes precedence. As a second body is discovered, just days later, the urgency to solve the case before more lives are lost increases, but Gina can't be in two places at once. Unfortunately, whatever decision she makes is likely to be the wrong one.
Book thirteen in this series is as tense and fast-moving as is expected from Carla Kovach, with Gina still fighting her demons and reeling from a recent betrayal. Written from more than one point of view, the crime and history behind it are seen from all sides, which I always enjoy. The main protagonists slip into place easily now, and this was a really good read.
I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, but the opinions expressed are my own. I enjoyed this next chapter of Gina's life. Recommended.
The 13th book in the Gina Harte series is a pretty solid crime thriller/murder mystery.
I really enjoyed the investigative side of this story, this is where Gina is at her strongest.
On a more personal note, her relationship with her boss Briggs is still uncertain - whilst he begs for forgiveness and to let him back into her life. Gina, still feeling some hurt keeps him at arms length.
One relationship (ok, 2) that is getting annoying is that between Gina and her daughter Hannah. I’m sorry but what an ungrateful madam! And no one should put up with that kind of behaviour from an ex mother in law!
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for giving me a copy of this book in exchange for my review.
Their Cold Hearts is another fantastic book in the Detective Gina Harte series. Gina is supposed to be on a little vacation from work so that she can look after her granddaughter while her daughter is in Paris. The station calls on evening as a body has been found at a local shelter and her boss wants Gina to get a look at the scene before it's cleared. Gina agrees to come in but drops her granddaughter at the station first. Friends there have agreed to keep an eye on her and entertain her.
Sasha keeps getting a phone call in the middle of the night and when she answers the phone, nobody says anything. It's eery and it keeps happening. Sasha's job is finding shelter for homeless people and eventually helping them to find an apartment of their own. She loves her work and finds it rewarding. Sasha has something in her past that she's ashamed of and feels like this job does a lot to give back. Sasha finds out that a body was found murdered at one of the buildings she uses as a shelter for the homeless. She heads out to calm the remaining residents and try to find out what happened.
Gina arrives at the murder scene and gears up to go in. There are a good many people that have gathered even though it's very early. Once inside, Gina is told that there are homeless people in each apartment. The murdered man was Wesley. He was stabbed to death and bled out quickly. When Gina enters she sees him lying on his blood soaked bed with a coin in the middle of his forehead. No one knows why, but they know it was placed there intentionally. Maybe it's a signature of the murderer. Sasha is waiting outside and is interviewed about the murdered man as the police need any information they can get. Sasha hadn't seen him since placement and knew very little.
As the team comes together to share info, it is apparent that Gina will be needed and her vacation is over. She wouldn't mind if it only affected her, but she was supposed to be spending time with Bailey. Hannah, her daughter, was going to be furious if she found out Gina was working. Gina had promised to take off and watch Bailey so that Hannah could go on the trip to Paris. Hannah still holds grudges against Gina from her own childhood, so this won't go over well. Luckily, one of the officers wives wants to watch Bailey the next day. She's going to bake cupcakes with her and take her to the zoo. Bailey is excited, but somewhat sad, that she won't be with Nanny Gina.
A couple of days later another body is discovered murdered in the same way. Are the victims related? Sasha recognizes the second victim and it sends shivers through her. Could this be related to what happened many years ago? Is the message spray painted on the wall meant for Sasha? Why is she being terrorized by a kid on an electric scooter? Sasha is scared and doesn't feel safe at home anymore. She's seen someone watching her and now someone has broken a window in her house. Will Sasha be safe? Will she figure out who is terrorizing her? Are the murders related to her past? Will Gina be able to figure out the murders and how they're related before there's another one? Will Gina's daughter find out about Bailey spending time with people from work?
Their Cold Hearts keeps you on your toes as you're trying to figure out who the murderer could be. I love books that keep you on edge and this one definitely does! Carla Kovach has delivered another thrilling chapter in the Gina Harte series. I rate this book 4 stars and give it a high recommendation. I'd like to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for an advanced copy of Their Cold Hearts in exchange for a fair review. #TheirColdHearts
Loved it!! The Detective Gina Harte Series is definitely one of my favorites. I was hooked from the beginning and couldn't put the book down because I had to know who killed Wes and was out for revenge. There were so many twists and turns. I was suspicious of so many people. I never guessed the identity of the killer until it was finally revealed. I knew the reasons had to be related to what happened fifteen years prior. I was definitely shocked at who was behind everything. The award for being the most stupid and putting herself in danger goes to Macie. All she cared about was becoming some famous podcaster and didn't care what she did to get the scoop. She was so reckless. The police are at her house trying to protect Macie and her father. What does Macie do? She goes to meet the killer. Her response to everything- I'm eighteen. I can do what I want. She feels sorry for the killer, even though he's murdered several people and terrorized them. What happened to his child is tragic, but it doesn't mean you can kill people. I love DI Gina Harte and wished Hannah could see how amazing her mother is. She's a wonderful grandmother and amazing police officer. Hannah blames her for having to work while she was growing up. Gina needs to stop apologizing to her daughter. Unfortunately, Hannah is more like her dad's side of the family. She probably will not even believe her mother was abused by Terry. Gracie is the innocent victim in all of this. Now she will be around Hetty. I can't wait for the next book in the series. Hannah will still be her miserable, hateful self and DI Harte will need to solve another murder.
Definitely recommend the book and the previous ones in the series. This was a great mystery/thriller. Loved the characters, writing style and story. I can't wait to find out what's next for Det. Gina Harte. So glad DCI Briggs finally came to his senses. There's no one better for him than Gina. She definitely needs him now more than ever. Look forward to reading more books by the author. Loved the book cover.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bookouture through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
