Anytime I travel, I like to walk into a country having read as much of the literature as possible. There isn’t a wealth of novels coming out of Belize, but I at least wanted to get a sense of this country about which I know so little. I recalled a book on Kuwait that I read in preparation for a contract there, and how impressed I was with the concise and yet thorough and eminently useful information. The series was The Cultures of the World Series, so I looked for the Belize book and was not disappointed.
While not quite as incisive and interesting as the Kuwait book, this one is still a really great introduction. Perfect 10 thousand foot view of everything from politics to linguistic traditions. I found the explanations of Belizean ethnicities and the evolving dynamic of immigration extremely interesting and helpful. The explanation of American tourism and its impact on the on the economy, not to mention women’s roles, was also super enlightening. Would recommend to anyone who wants to get a quick, broad look at the country before visiting.
