Want to settle Mars, that's easy, send robots ahead to build all the infrastructure the humans will need when they arrive.
Yeah, only that doesn't work out so well when the robots decide they like it there, and don't want humans mucking up their shiny new planet. Of course, there's more to it than that, and humans and robots alike have different agendas, so things get complicated.
I liked this story, though I generally do like stories of this kind, space colonies being built on other worlds, regardless of their location, and while this story effectively is a colony story, it's alsoone of betrayal (what colony story isn't?) and one of hope as well, throw in a little blackmail, and you have a story ripe for the telling. It certainly wasn't the best Mars settlement story I've read, but it's good enough to keep turning the pages, and sometimes, that's all you need.
