Doubting Thomas

Rate this book
He doesn't remember...but she does. For five years, Thomas has lived without a past. A motorcycle accident left him with scars, permanent amnesia and a lot of anger. But the scars aren't all on the outside. He knows one day he'll need to figure out who he used to be, but for now, he's content in his misery and denial. If his family doesn't care to find him, the feeling is mutual-until the love of a tender-hearted, sassy redhead changes his mind. Alyssa Morgan vowed to locate her missing husband and has followed every clue, every lead, every hunch, hoping to find him and the reason for his disappearance. But fate has something else in store for her and puts in her path an aloof man who has her husband's voice and the disfigured face of a stranger. Torn between his past and their future, can they put their doubts aside and let love in?

Could not finish this one. Didn't buy into the amnesia story and that the heroine would not recognize her hubs - plus she should have been clued into the fact that he had amnesia when she finally realized it really was him, and he never once recognized her.

By all rights, I should not have liked this book. The plot reminds me of – and reads like – a story arc from “The Guiding Light” in the 80’s. Except…I watched The Guiding Light with obsession while I was in college in the 1980’s. So…

I didn’t like this book. I loved this book. It has all the elements of a clichéd soap – amnesia (common as the common cold on soaps), missing husband (Chris/Thomas) with a new (or broken) face, the wife (Alyssa) who can’t decide if the hero is really her husband (figure it out) and she’s (gasp!) falling for him (is It cheating if it’s really him?) and the husband’s best friend (Jeff) who not-so-secretly wants the wife for himself (he might as well hang a “Kiss Me I’m a Bad Guy” sign around his neck – you get that from chapter 1).

This should read like a train wreck. And it does. But that’s why it’s so much fun. Oh the angst! But the writing is tight and the dialogue is zippy. And you really have to like all the characters even if they are complete idiots at one time or another during the novel. Take it as soap opera and not high literature and you’ll have a lot of fun.

Fun Soap Fact: She recognizes Chris from his profile the minute she sees him. Then she sees the other, scarred side of his face and thinks “no, couldn’t possibly be him” – even though the undamaged part of his face is THE SAME DAMN FACE as Chris for crying out loud! But then there wouldn’t be a book, right?

Stephanie Taylor has a winner with this book. A page turner that keeps you guessing until the end.

Thomas is a broken man that don't remember his past because of an accident that left him scarred and not remembering who he was. After many plastic surgeries he looks nothing like he did before.

A wife that can't forget her missing husband and a determination of steel to find him even though everyone else tells her to leave it alone, he is dead or he would have come home by now.

When Chris goes missing and leaves behind the family, wife and best friend what extent will they go to, to find him.
Finding out he has amnesia from an accident and has no family or friends is hard, but having scars all over his face makes it so that no one wants to be with him and he doesn't like himself.
Will they find one another and rekindle a long lost love or will a past keep them apart?
