Two men on the run ... Newspaperman Dan Cameron gets a cool old typewriter for his 40th birthday. It once belonged to Ben Hecht, who used it to write the movie "Notorious." Dan uses it to write a best-seller. Then the Hecht estate says the typewriter was stolen and demands its return. As his lawyers fight in court, Dan and his wife, Erin, take off so he can get at least one more book out of the machine. Bank robber Fetch McDonald is three weeks away from parole when his father brings bad news. Fetch's ex-wife, Verene, who still holds title to his heart, is going to remarry - in two weeks. One week before Fetch's release. With the help of his cousin, Lerome, Fetch breaks out. But the car Lerome has stolen breaks down. Right outside of Dan and Erin's cabin in the woods. The two desperados steal the Camerons' SUV. And Lerome, a quirky sort, steals Dan's typewriter and the only copy of his new novel. Not long after that Fetch and an unlikely accomplice are duplicating the crimes described in Dan's novel. Dan and Erin have no choice but to join in the manhunt. If the court rules against Dan, what's he going to say? An escaped convict stole the typewriter? Yeah, right. Besides, Dan thinks there's a new book in tracking down the thieves.
Joseph Flynn has been published both traditionally — Signet Books, Bantam Books and Variance Publishing — and through his own imprint, Stray Dog Press, Inc. Both major media reviews and reader reviews have praised his work. Booklist said, “Flynn is an excellent storyteller.” The Chicago Tribune said, “Flynn [is] a master of high-octane plotting.” The most repeated reader comment is: Write faster, we want more.
A prisoner escapes a work farm to stop his ex wife from remarrying. A manuscript for a book is stolen without the final last chapter. The author's special typewriter is also stolen. He can't type his book without it. The robbers read the manuscript. They start pulling heists following the manuscript. The story is interesting because the robbers, the police, and the author and his wife are all intertwined in their attempts to get what they want. It was an interesting concept the way the story worked. The characters themselves have a wide range of character flaws that lead them into their varied attempts to restore what they want. Also what they want changes at times. Very ingenious plot, and a very enjoyable book.
Great storyline, about the old theory ( Nature VS Environment), and Predispositions. A beat writer for the Chicago Tribune has written a Best Selling Book using the Typewriter of the author who wrote Notorious. His wife bought the Typewriter as a gift, unfortunately the Estate of the late author wants it back. The other characters are the Son of a Bank Robber and a man who was raised by Religious Fanatics. The author does a great job in describing how childhood Trauma can affect your lifestyle and can last a lifetime.
This book has so many twists you couldn't begin to list them. An author is robbed by an escaped convict who takes his precious typewriter and only copy of his new novel. It gets crazier as the author attempts to get it back, the criminal finds his life torn apart and tries to start a new one, while a retired cop tries to catch him. All while other characters are doing their best to ruin it all.
Fast paced fun adventure full of "bad guys" and sexual innuendos. When life imitates the freshly completed novel of former Chicago Tribune newspaper man, everyone (including the author) is waiting to see how it all turns out! This is fun to read and watch the progress of both groups and how they intersect. Many funny moments and unexpected events. The characters were likeable and fascinating. Superb entertainment!
I wish that books had disclaimers, like movies with their ratings on Netflix. I loved this book but can't give it 5 stars due to excessive use of f word and unnecessary sex scenes. But the story! It's a book within a book about an author who just finishes his manuscript, only to have it stolen by an escaped convict and his cousin who decide to act out the book. Really funny scenes. I'd love to see this in a movie, only make it PG-13, please!
Sadly. I wasn’t crazy about any of the rest of the book, which surprised me because I have been quite impressed with everything else I’ve read of Flynn’s. I finished the book hoping it would get better. For me, it didn’t. I didn’t particularly like the characters and I thought the plot required more disbelief than I was willing to give. He did tie everything up very neatly and I’ll probably still read his next book.
Loved how Flynn ran the 2-3 stories together producing uniguely funny characters and happy endings for all. Couldn’t give it a5 star because to me it didn’t meet the high quality of most of his previous writings but still a page turner with a lot of mirth and interesting characters.
Humorous and entertaining with some weird, some interesting, some outre characters, all in all good reading, with no reason to stop at any time, other than normal breaks. A nice respite from deep plots and complicated characters, although a few may be trying for that status. I intend to continue reading Mr. Flynn's writings as he holds my interest with his efforts.
A thoroughly enjoyable romp, Hot Type is a different take on the book within a book genre. Flynn has populated his tale with plenty of interesting characters, some goofier than others, but all with enough redeeming qualities that you can't help but cheer, even for the bad guys (except Trini perhaps). Loads of fun!
I must say I rarely give 5 stars to a book! This one was worth EVERY STAR!! Just when you think you have it all figured out, some of what you expected was true but , there is another p!it twist! So many p!Ayers in the game. However, it never got so complicated that you wanted to quit! This is definitely a most read!😲😲😲😆
I love the plot and the writing. Some of the characters not so much! Too much crude language....the absence of which was why I read almost everything he has written. Sorry ....moving on to Texas in the hope I get Joseph Flynn back.
I laughed out loud reading this book! Great characters with huge flaws. I read this while quarantined/shelter in place. Definitely helped to pass the time. Enough twists and turns to keep me guessing and interested.
Enjoyable but sometimes challenging to separate the different levels of story-telling embedded in this volume. All nicely wrapped up by the time I reached the end.
A writer thinks his success comes from a typewriter once used by a famous author--but it is stolen, along with his latest manuscript. His wife and he team up with a former FBI agent to track the thief. Some humor but too involved and too long. I rate this a 4.3.
Loved this book. I love Mr. Flynn’s John Tall Wolf stories, but this was even better. There were so many twists you couldn’t put the book down. I know how some of the characters in the story felt, you could wait to see how it ended. I highly recommend this one!
A different kind of story about an author who has his typewriter and the manuscript of his next story stolen. He is writing a mystery and the theives start reading the manuscript and use it to plan their next crimes. I throughly enjoyed it.
I didn’t believe this book was up to Flynn’s normal standards. I’ve read almost all his books. There was to much sexual dropped in to fill the story out. Characters were weak without any body to build on. Read and make up your mind.
Great book: engaging, likeable personalities. Fun plot with lots of twists and turns. Well written and easy to read. I've enjoyed every Joseph Flynn book I've read. Highly recommend.
This story has suspence, crime, danger, and keeps you turning the page to read what happens next until the end looking forward to reading more books from this author
This is such a cool story! Just keeps you on the edge and I love how each event happens and using the author's book stories as real events, the minds always working!
