Snow day! School’s closed! And somewhere out there, a snowball fight is waiting to happen! Comedian and future Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon brings the high action and high comedy of winter’s most riotous kid rite of passage to life in brisk, uproarious verse. Snow bunnies and Fallon fans of all ages will recognize the runny noses, snowball assaults, toboggan shields, and hand-me-down snowsuits that are essential ingredients of cold-weather fun.
James Thomas Fallon, Jr. is an American comedian, actor, and musician known for his work on Saturday Night Live. He is also scheduled to become the host of Late Night in 2009.
This is so cute! All the fun and excitement of a snow day-- with a big snowball fight at the center of the action. I really appreciated how kind the brother was to his little sister (and that Jimmy mentions his own sis in the dedication). A big THANK YOU to my own sister for finding this for me! :-)
Oh, and I love Jimmy Fallon but I think it's a cute book whether or not you're a Jimmy fan.
Yes Jimmy Fallon again. We live in snow country , and this is a cute interactive book for ages 3-6. Who doesn't love a snow day , and books , plenty of books. Q's Feb. 4.5 stars
Students of the American Revolution will find many parallels between author Fallon's Snowball Fight and the Boston Massacre of 1770. It was in the lead up to that Massacre, one that greatly fueled anti-British sentiment, that a mob of colonists surrounded British Soldiers and threw among other things, snowballs. In retaliation, the soldiers fired on the mob, killing five and injuring six others.
In Fallon's allegorical Snowball Fight, we see a similar dynamic emerge on a humble snow day. In the tale, it's a mob of school children looking for a fight, but then left overwhelmed and dumbstruck by a violent rebuttal that leaves a frightening body count.
On first reading, the retaliation may not appear to be particularly extreme, but in the final pages the author reveals a secret: the protagonist stores his snowballs in the freezer, and, in the process, renders them more ice than snow. You don't know the pain of being shot with a 18th century musket at close range until you've been hit by a ball of ice you thought was snow.
Perhaps the most interesting aspect of Snowball Fight is that Fallon writes from the redcoat/British POV, despite marketing the book to American audiences. This hints at a subversive subtext - is it indeed Fallon's view that we would be a better society had the American revolution never occurred? It seems so.
I've heard of communists in Hollywood, but I had no idea the tories had such a strong presence.
SNOWBALL FIGHT! There are very few "celebrity" authors I feel should be writing children's books and I'm pleased to say Jimmy Fallon is one of them.
This being the first time I spotted this book on the shelf--spring of 2014--I was SHOCKED to see its publication date was 2005! I can only think that, since Jimmy's taken his new post as host of The Tonight Show, the publishers figured it's a good time to push the book. I'm glad they did!
Already knowing Jimmy has a great sense of humor and is obviously a talented guy, I thought there was a good chance this book would be good (after all, I love Jeff Foxworth's DIRT ON MY SHIRT). I'm happy to report this was a VERY entertaining, simple read that lent to fun, frolicking illustrations. It brought me right back to my childhood.
Way to go, Jimmy! I hope you find inspiration to write more :)
I am amazingly surprised. I was expecting not to like this book because I do not like the front cover. The front cover seems old and dated and like something I would see in my childhood 20 years ago. However, the pages on the inside are beautifully illustrated and they work with the story and its rhymes well. It has a cadence and sometimes the cadence is a little sharp but altogether it works. The story is memorable and cute. This would be a fun read for children’s storytime, especially if you could have a snowball fight (either a real one or one with fake fluffy yarn balls).
SMART 1H 2018 - yes, this story was written by THAT Jimmy Fallon. It's a good choice for my wonderful 3rd grade boy who struggles with reading, but really wants to try. The language in the book is simple, the drawings are fun, and the story is cleverly presented. I mean really, who doesn't love a snowball fight?!
The illustrations were okay, and the plot was mediocre (even though it wasn't original). What really frustrated me is that there were some parts that rhymed well, and other parts that tried to rhyme but didn't quite make it. With such a famous name behind the project, you would think that they could at least make sure that the book rhymed properly!
I really enjoyed this book. As a child I can remember the excitement of a Snow Day. The illustrator did an excellent job drawing the pictures very colorful and large scenes. Thank you Jimmy Fallon for the beautiful memory of my snow days many years ago. A must read during winter.
"Tonight Show" host Jimmy Fallon writes about a great day of a SNOW DAY! This book describes all the essentials of the classic snowball fight! Kids and families will love it and be ready to go outside in the snow after reading this book!
In this rhyming story school is closed and children are very excited to get out in the snow. They dress hurriedly and get involved in a snowball fight with their friends. Great excitement is expressed in select words and fabulous illustrations.
Freed from school by a snow day, a young boy and his sister have a rollicking good time prepping for, participating in, and finally thawing out from a snowball fight. While the flow of actor/author Jimmy Fallon's rhyming text has an occasional bump, Stower's colorful and energetic illustrations provide a vivid snapshot of these mischievous siblings.
Publishers Weekly (August 15, 2005)
With simple, exuberant rhyming couplets set to a driving meter, the star of Saturday Night Live follows a boy (who bears a striking resemblance to a young Jimmy Fallon) on a snow day. The hero bundles up, dashes out ("No time for breakfast,/ already late./ Pretend I don't hear when Mom yells,/ `Wait!' "), and builds a fort in anticipation of the title event. There's a tense moment when the outcome looks dark ("Out of ammo/ trapped in fort./ Enemy approaching,/ need support"), but the hero's little sister whom Stower (Two Left Feet) depicts as not only adoring but also non-pesty comes through in the nick of time. Fallon's grown-up fans, who might expect a tale punctuated with irony, may be disappointed. This book (inspired by the song "Snowball" on his album, The Bathroom Wall, according to the jacket flap) is straight-up nostalgia, a paean to a childhood so idyllic that Stower can actually get away with showing kids who wear pots and colanders as snowball-fighting headgear. Any mischievousness falls under the conventional boys-will-be-boys category, such as a parting shot of the hero sneaking to the freezer with "one last snowball [for] future use." Although the compositional focus on many spreads feels diffuse, Stower's watercolors, featuring pug-nosed, wide-eyed kids, exude an old-fashioned winter friskiness. Ages 4-up. (Sept.) PreS-Gr 1-When school is closed because of a snowstorm, a boy and his sister race outside to play. He builds a fort, and soon a fierce snowball fight with other children ensues. The battle rages until it's time to head home for cocoa. Short rhyming stanzas describe the events. Ranging in size from small insets to double-page paintings, the energetic cartoon-style illustrations capture the action and humor. Sporting colorful outerwear and a silver colander on his head, the protagonist is ready for any adventure. Large print and lots of repetition make this a good choice for beginning readers as well as an engaging read-aloud.-Sally R. Dow, Ossining Public Library, NY Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

Snowball Fight is an easy read for younger aged students who may be learning to read. But, it can also be used for a lesson with older grades. I read this book out loud to my fourth graders and had them recreate an image of the book with water color paints. They really enjoyed this and it covered an art standard. It is a quick read and can be read in just a few spare moments of your day. It would be an excellent read when schools have just had a snow day. A writing lesson could come from it, they could share what they did on their snow day off from school.
I think Jimmy Fallon is a wonderful comedian, but I found this picture book just ok. It's cute but predictable. Yes, kids like snow days, building forts, and having snowball fights with their friends. Nothing new here. At the same time, some of the illustrations, like a kid wearing a pot on his head, or the younger sister flinging snowballs scooped up by a contraption she's rigged up with her tricycle and teacups, a bit over the top.
19 months - WE LOVE THIS BOOK. We've borrowed it from the library a number of times and put it on our Must Buy List. I finally found it for $2 on Amazon, SOLD! It's a fun read aloud book for winter or anytime. We love to chant "Snowball - Snowball - Snowball FIGHT!" over and over just for fun. Jimmy Fallon, you did good with this one!
This book captures the fun and excitement of having a snow day. From waking up to see the snow on the ground to warming up by the fire with coco at the end of the day. This would be great read in winter, if there was snow in the forecast.

I'm biased because I LOVE Jimmy Fallon, and this song on his CD "The Bathroom Wall" was one of my favorites right off the bat. By taking out just one or two lines that are a little inappropriate for a younger audience, Fallon pulled off turning his spoof punk rock heavy metal song about a snowball fight into an entertaining picture book that's perfect for winter and storytime!
When the first snow fall comes this book is a must read to you get learners. The book by Jimmy Fallon is filled with rhymes and fun ways to discuss snow days and what everyone does when schools out and the snow falls! The rhymes make this book an easy read for 1st-3rd grades. This is a very contemporary story that is very realistic for readers.
Who knew? Jimmy Fallon? Perfect for a winter themed storytime that isn't Christmas. Good rhyming and sequencing. I made snowballs similar to the paper flowers with white trash bags and rubber bands. The kids love having a "safe" snowball fight
Really fun book describing a young boy's preparation for a neighborhood snowball fight when school is cancelled. The wide-eyed character illustrations perfectly show the excitement and fun of a snow day!
A book about a little boy and his sister on a snow day and how the end up in a huge snow fight. This book is a fun read and great for wintertime. Even though their aren't a lot of vocabulary words and the book is an easy read I still enjoyed it and found myself laughing at the illustrations.
Short quick rhyming book that details waking up on a snow day for a snowball fight. I thought Jimmy Fallon's dedication was really sweet. It made me appreciate the story even more being that his sister was with him on every page.
Yes, Jimmy Fallon has a children's book. And it's good. Very short rhyming text and funny illustrations show a boy getting dressed and rushing outside for a snowball fight.
This is a cute, humorous story about playing in the snow. It features bold, bright illustrations and is not very long. It would make a great read aloud in the winter.
