Max knows his family and friends aren’t sure what to make of his moods and impulses. But he’s in college now and ready to show them he’s grown up and ready to make mature choices. At least he’s ready for a serious relationship and almost ready to tell his family he’s gay. He could use a little help, though.

With his loving big brother gone forever, who is left to ask for help? Daniel Rocco, his brother’s best friend and his longtime crush, of course. Daniel is solid and reliable--the opposite of Max. But for some reason, Daniel seems terrified of what Max might do next.

Treva Harte lives near a city with many, many attorneys. Thanks to Loose Id and her writing, she can be a recovering attorney and now spends her time writing, editing, raising adolescents, taking care of an elderly mother and dealing with a hyperactive husband (who says he's just very energetic). She is also co-owner and Editor-in-Chief of the e-publishing company Loose Id.

She and her husband both like writing in whatever time they have left, so they often fight over—sorry, since he is still a practicing attorney they NEGOTIATE—keyboard time. No wonder Treva’s particular brand of sensual romance is a bit offbeat and usually mixed with fantasy.

This was a cute, short story. It was very easy to read where we got a few good details about the background of each character but not an overabundance of it. I liked Max a lot because of his constant ‘act first, think later’ moves. He’s a very likable character especially with his determination to get Daniel to be with him. Daniel, at first, seemed like he was going to be an asshole but he slowly warms up to you as you hear him think about how sexy Max is, and his realization that he loves Max, and may have for a while.

Overall, this is a good read. It was simple and perfect for the mood I was in and I happen to know the sequel has started to be written so I’m definitely looking forward to that. A bit of a warning, though, this is written in first person by both characters. I didn’t have a problem with it but others might.

Like others, I thought this was a cute and fun romp. The characters are likable, the sex scenes are hot (the restaurant one is seriously a keeper) and the connection is clearly there. Unfortunately the switching POV is definitely a problem and there are too many loose ends to really satisfy. As a quick, fluff read this delivers. Anything else and it has too many holes to be effective.

The story is about a young college kid, Max, that decides he’s going to finally go after his brother’s best friend Daniel. Daniel of course wants nothing to do with Max initially but soon warms up to sex. When Max is determined to make their casual sex mean something, Daniel takes some convincing.

The actual story takes place over just a few days. Max shows up, outs himself, asks for sex with Daniel, the two have it – a lot – with a quick bar fight and happy ending. It’s a fine story for something easy and light but it has too many holes to be satisfying for me. For starters there is the dead brother Matt. There are inklings throughout the story that Matt and Daniel were involved in some way, though Matt was straight. After a drunken encounter together, Matt can’t take it and goes tearing off and ends up in a fatal car accident. I guess Daniel responded to that by joining the military? It’s a bit fuzzy and never well spelled out and Daniel clearly has some residual issues about his feelings for Matt.

Not to mention that Max is in college a few hours away and the book ends with a happy ending without ever reconciling how that’ll work. Max leaves college? They do long distance? Daniel moves there? This open ended issue is just one of a few – Matt being another – that supposedly love solves everything. Max’s parents are good with Daniel and Max being together but that seems almost too easy. They’re nice people and obviously loving but clearly would have some questions and concerns that are swept under the rug in the name of true love.

What works despite these obvious holes is that the sex is plentiful and fun and the characters are interesting and warm. The alternating first person point of view is random and arbitrary, switching with no break or warning. This is frustrating and could have been helped by a mere page break of some kind. Thankfully it’s always easy to tell whose head is speaking at the time and the sex scenes are inventive, fun, and steamy. I’d say read this for the light sex and easy reading and nothing more.

Nineteen year old Max Richards has had crush over Daniel, his big brother's best friend for years. Now, he is planning to do something about it. He plans to seduce Daniel, to let Daniel have him in oh, so many ways, and to make Daniel see that he is worth keeping. Daniel has been best friend with Matt, Max's brother for years. He has never seen Max as anything but a little brother. Then Max appears in his door step with determination (even if he seems to stutter his way first) and Daniel realizes he might be over his head this time.

This book is part of Loose ID's "Celebrating Coming Out Day" series; so I figure that someone will come out :). The story is pretty nice and enjoyable; it's always fun to see the younger man doing the seduction. AND, this book has one of most naughty but effective seduction scenes in restaurant that I have ever read. Plus, I like Max. He's cute!! And Max's father is one cool cat; even if he only appears in a few paragraphs.

The biggest niggle for me, which makes me unable to give more stars, is the writing style. This book has two voices as narrator, Max AND Daniel, using 1st person. I usually have no problem with it; BUT some of the books I read using this style do have some sort of "signage" to tell readers which narration that is currently "on". It can be in form of different chapter for different voice, or like with P.A. Brown, use the name of the narrator before their voice starts.

In this book, both Max and Daniel's point of view switches quickly between one another in one chapter without any "warning". It just suddenly switched. Snap! Like that. My brain needs to quickly alternate and adjust with the story. Thank God that this is only a novella, because it will be pretty annoying if it's a full-length novel. Other issue is the "secret" that Daniel has with Matt (Max's brother). I don't know if that is necessary plot -- I just don't see the point of it #justsayin'

This story was a somewhat classic tale of childhood friends/acquaintances who hook up after years apart.

What it did well: The characterization of the two leads was done rather well. They were three-dimensional, and interesting, with believable issues and flaws that made their predicament engaging. The supporting characters were pretty good, although a little two-dimensional. I really liked the brother's girlfriend that Daniel talks to in a bar; she was an interesting character, for all that she was only in one scene.

What wasn't so good: Ms. Harte's style of storytelling was a little...clunky. The internal monologues occurred right in the middle of the dialogue, and it resulted in several paragraphs between lines of speech, which was annoying (but not unreadable). Sometimes it was hard to remember what they had been talking about, because the thoughts had wandered far enough off topic. The parents were predictable and somewhat flat...the scene they appear in they almost disappeared as Daniel and Max talked about stuff, despite the fact Max was coming out to them.

Also, some issues were never really approached that might have made Daniel's resistance more believable...his injury and his dreams/hallucinations from the war are both things that Max should be able to reassure Daniel about...I wish we could have seen a scene following a nightmare.

In essence, this was a decent read that had the potential for more. If you don't mind a slightly unpolished feel to your stories, you might enjoy this one.

Actually, my rating is more like 4.5,. The only real fault to me was i wanted more of it. The book is short and the depth of the characters left all kinds of potential for additional conflict. Maybe sequels? One of the most interesting aspects of the book is that its written with two first-person viewpoints. This is new to most readers and i loved it (even if i had to check once or twice to be sure i knew whose viewpoint i was in). Max is a marvelous young man with personality to spare. Daniel is angst-ridden for good reason (it was his complexities that would have supported a longer book) but we understand why Max loves him. I really hope there are sequels and i certainly recommend the book to anyone who likes (or wants to try) m/m. : )

This book is actually about Daniel trying to get over his loss over his best friend whom he loved. Now, Max, the brother of his late best friend, come to him to ask for a favor. To tell his parents that he is gay. Since Daniel is basically an adopted son in their family and has come out long time ago, Max thought the parents would be more acceptable. And some more: Max is attracted to him. Battered from war, Daniel think the young Max whom he has known since they grew up, deserves someone of his age. Does he?

I liked reading this book, although sometimes writings are a bit dry. The characters are likable, although the background story about Daniel's relationship with Max's late brother sometimes makes me cringe a bit, particularly when Daniel is thinking about it when he's with Max.

This is a difficult story for me to rate. I enjoyed the last half of the book, but I found the writing style to be confusing and annoying. Both characters are in first person and I had a problem juggling who was thinking or talking. Good premise, okay short story. 2.5 Stars

Good m/m romance about Max, a college student who hasn't come out to his parents, who shows up at the door of his (deceased) brother's best friend with an agenda... The one detractor was the alternating first person, which, while done pretty well, was confusing at times.

Main Characters:
Max is a 19-year-old college student who is ready to come out to his parents. He's messed around with guys in the past--in a "we're drunk and no women are around" sort of way--and he's ready now to admit to the world that he wants something more meaningful. To help him in his coming out, he enlists the aid of his late older brother's friend Daniel... or so we're told. In actuality, he comes across as manipulative and bratty, using the situation to seduce Daniel. The way he went about his manipulation made me rather dislike him, in truth.

Daniel is older (though it's never clarified just how much), working as an ER tech after leaving the military due to an encounter with a land mine that left him with a critical injury to one leg. He doesn't believe that he's good for anyone now and pushes people away when they threaten to get close. He cuts a fairly pathetic figure, actually. I liked him in general more than Max, though there were moments of behavior that made me want to smack him.

Chemistry:
Max and Daniel are an interesting couple, even if I do find the way they get together (Max's aforementioned manipulation) to be unappealing. Max has had a crush on Daniel for years and runs with it, while Daniel struggles to equate the 12-year-old he remembers with the college student trying to get into his pants. Their sexual dynamic is also interesting, if it sometimes makes me frown; I'll just be getting into the scene and actually buying into the characters, and then Daniel calls Max "boy" and my distaste skyrockets. Not what I look for.

There were also a few actions that I couldn't buy into, including the first blowjob. Seriously. They're sitting in a restaurant, Max drops his knife, and suddenly decides that while he's down there he just has to get his mouth on Daniel's cock? It was so absurd that I had to reread it to make sure that it wasn't just a fantasy.

Secondary Characters:
The secondary characters are few in number--not surprising given the length of the story. The most important one for much of the story is actually Max's late brother, Matt, despite not actually being present and dwelling in the spaces between. It worked for him and for Max and Daniel.

Story:
The bulk of the story is Max's seduction of Daniel and the sex that results, though there is an event later in the story that leads to the resolution that Max was purportedly originally going for. The event, however... It just seemed gratuitous, like an awkward contrivance to bring them together with Max's parents for the big revelation.

Writing:
The writing was mostly solid, a few errors here and there but nothing terrible. Something seemed to be missing, though; I was never wowed by a turn of phrase. Competent, but not really anything special for me.

Overall:
Characters I never quite came to like and motivations behind the story that I found distasteful meant that I just couldn't get behind this. Those who mind manipulation less may find more here, but it's unfortunately just not the book for me.

Nineteen year old college student Max Richards showed up on his deceased older brother's best friend's doorstep one weekend with a plan. He was going to get Daniel Rocco to help him come out to his parents. And if he got a chance to sleep with the man who has fueled his fantasies for so many years, so much the better. But Daniel's got his own secrets and his own wounds that he'll have to deal with before he's ready to take on the force that is Max. Will they be able to get it together or will Daniel end up Maxxed Out?

The love scenes were erotic, I liked the overall premise of the story and the dialogue between the characters was good (once I got who was speaking). I thought that the characters were developed well, and the readers are given the back story of the characters in a way that didn't detract from the pace of story or keep it from moving forward.

However, the story was too rushed for me to enjoy the way I wanted. Also, I felt that there was a part of story line that should have been resolved between the main characters before rushing to the "happily ever after" in the next couple of pages. I believe that this is an erotic short story that I think would have benefitted from a longer format. There were so many things going on, I don't think that there was time to adequately get through all of them. Add to that the fact that the story was written with shifting first-person views, and I think that the story was a bit of a miss for me.

So, I am giving this 3 out of 5 stars. The story had a lot going for it, but it just didn't come together in the end for me.

Cute in a way but this felt like it was a few chapters into a book rather than a complete story. Daniel is saddled with way too many issues including PTSD, injury & past feelings for Max's brother for me to really believe his emotional feelings for Max that comes out at the end of the story. It has one of those hospital love confessional scenes that just didn't really ring true.

There were also some writing issues. The alternating points of view from paragraph to paragraph is not my favorite style. It just causes confusion with whose head you're in from moment to moment.

I considered giving this a lower rating but I did like it's fun side. It's when this story tries to bring in more serious issues that it falters as you do need the time to explore them & this book was just too short in that respect. There is another book in the series that may help with this, although I really think it would have been better to actually write one complete story instead of splitting it up into parts like this.

This story is told in 1st person POV from two different characters. This is a dangerous technique, but Ms. Harte handled it better than most, using character names and unique narration/voice for each man during POV switches. Despite this, there were still points that I had to go back and reread to remember whose head I was in.

The story itself was a cute tale of a college boy coming out to his big brother's best friend, in order to seduce him. The history between the two main characters and their link (Max's brother Matt) was well spaced out and added layers to this sexually charged story. Daniel's post-war pain (both physical and mental), also enhanced their story, but was left unresolved.

I'd be interested in reading more of these two, as there were a couple of things left unsaid by the end of the book that could easily lend themselves to another tale.

A short story but still covers a lot in it. You get a good sense of background and at least Max's character. Daniel is a little more mysterious but this is a series and you need something for the second book. I'm hoping the second one will delve into Daniel's character more. Max is easy to love but I think Daniel is more complex and so will be a better character is the long run. He seems so broken right now and it seems obvious to the reader Max can help him. I want to say fix but that isn't right more like mend. I will be reading the second book:)

I know some people weren't a fan of the switching 1st person POV, but I actually liked that...it was easier to get into the mind's of each character and also thought it gave a unique and very real voice to the storytelling. I wish I could have seen more depth to them at certain points, and been filled in more about the backstory with Matt and Daniel, but I think that's the limitation of choosing to write in that style. I enjoyed the story and characters and their fears, flaws, and realism, and will definitely check out the sequel.

Great read if you are in the mood to read about a twink with attitude. I enjoyed the plot, the characters and the sex was super hot.

The story is super short - so sex kinda starts very early in the story. But I wasnt upset by this fact as it seemed to suit the story very well.

I was a bit annoyed that Daniel didnt reveal some important details BUT Max says at the end that he knows that there is a few secrets but he is willing to wait for them....so its kinda addressed

- Well worth a read if you want a funny, light hearted story with some super hot smexy scenes :O)

While I normally don't mind first person POV, this was a little difficult to follow, as it flipped back and forth between POV of Max and Daniel. I read it on Kindle and there were no delineating areas to show it was switching. Sometimes, the "I" speaking in the first sentence was not the same "I" as at the end of the paragraph, due to no separation.

I liked Max, knowing what he wanted and going after it. Daniel, I'm on the fence.

This more of a 3.5 for me. I like this more than I thought that would. For a short read, it covered alot of background and relationship building. I could see and understand Max's part but I think what lost me a little bit is how quickly Daniel fell in line. It really needed more time to explore the relationship and the secret. I didn't mind that secret was left untold but I would have liked to see some more internal development from Daniel on how Max grew on him.

A cute story with two very likable characters. I do like when a younger guy is the one pursuing in the relationship rather than the typical older guy going after the younger one. A fun read.
