Nightrunner #5.5

Glimpses: A Collection of Nightrunner Short Stories

Rate this book
Lynn Flewelling's Glimpses explores "lost" moments from her popular Nightrunner Series, events alluded to or passed over - Alec's parents and childhood, Seregil's early liaisons in Skala, Seregil and Alec's first night as lovers, how Seregil and Micum Cavish met. Each story offers a new perspective on events readers have speculated about for years. For new readers, it offers an introduction to the characters Romantic Times calls "two of the most memorable heroes in fantasy." Professional and amateur art provided by Flewelling's fans accompany Glimpses' stories, as she honors the dedication and devotion her fans have given her over the years.

"Glimpses is full of treasures like Lynn Flewelling's deceptively easy and addictive storytelling, her vivid and engaging characters, and the amazing and heartfelt illustrations. This book is a must have for fans of Lynn's Nightrunner books, and if you haven't started the series yet, then Glimpses will leave you eager to discover more about Seregil and Alec, their adventures and the unique and fantastical world that the pair inhabit." -Suzanne McLeod, Spellcrackers.com series

"It's hard to imagine a lovelier gift to fans than this exquisite collection of gorgeously illustrated short stories. Flewelling indulges her loyal readers with these graceful glimpses 'between the lines' of the long-running and immensely popular Nightrunner series." -Josh Lanyon, Adrien English Mysteries and the Holmes & Moriarity Mysteries

"An unmissable short story collection from Flewelling. Set in the Nightrunner universe Glimpses captures Flewelling's characters at formative moments in their various timelines. Some of the stories fill in details that I've been waiting on for years..." -T.A. Moore, The Even Series

"Glimpses is a terrific collection, lovingly illustrated, a gift to all of us who love the Nightrunners. This rocks." -Patricia Briggs, Mercy Thompson Series

A treasure!

This book is a treat for fans of the saga, fill with curiosities, good contents, it was very enjoyable to read and discover more about this universe! This book was build for the fans, as it said, made out of love, the illustrations were created and donated by the fans which I greatly appreciate, that make the book something special!

I was wondering why Lynn warned that this book contains homoerotic scenes but did's said anything about the straight, it doesn't bother me that kind of content, when I'm expecting or want to read about, I was just unprepared, and I know people that wouldn't enjoy at all to get caught off guard with straight scenes! I'm not gonna be bias about it so I warning the readers:

This book contains erotic material, homosexual and heterosexual! :-)

Misfit

The Wild

By the River
I remember when I first read this story, before I start the series!

The Bond

The Summer Players

I love the fans contribution to this book and Lynn made a celebration with it, I was very pleased!
I wish to read more about some other characters, I'm curious about them, maybe in the future she'll create another book like this!!

Absolutely love the Book cover, congratulations to Anne!

No recuerdo cuándo lo leí.

No le encontré el sentido, no sentí que aportara mucho a la trama de los libros principales y fue aburrido de leer.

I loved the first 3 books in the Nightrunner series. Seregil, Alec and the rest of the crew, the swift pace and vividness of the story was as manna to me. I love fantasy novels! The last two revisited the setting for me but I found them somewhat rushed and confusing although of course as a fan, I still believe and look forward to the next installments.

So I was looking forward to the world of Seregil and Alec to be expanded in "Glimpses", which is what I'm sure the author wished for her readers. I found the volume of short stories disappointing however. I loved the Night Runner series not just because it was fantasy, but also for containing a positive same-sex love story throughout. I loved them for their classical and affectionate renditions of Seregil and Alec's times of intimacy but this book went into the graphic m/m type language and descriptions which I felt detracted from the stories and turned the characters, for me, into average run of the mill ones like the stuff so many authors churn out today.

I am absolutely certain because of the level of female readers clamoring for m/m fiction today this volume will be praised and very well received by them but for me, I won't be keeping it or rereading it. It rather spoiled the beauty of Seregil and Alec's relationship for me especially in including the affair with Korathan in modern terms and slang.

My favorite was an expanded background of Alec's relatively short time with his father and why he loved him so much. I greatly appreciated the many illustrations from fans who presented their vision of what Alec, Seregil and others looked like although I didn't much care for the cover. Seregil looked all too human for me.

I'm so glad I finally reread these. They're much better than I had remembered.

"Misfit"
Getting to see Seregil when he first came to Rhíminee was sad. It's a very dark time for him, and he's having trouble figuring out where he fits in this new world. Thankfully, we get to see Nysander again and how their friendship started. Korathan is a limp noodle though.

"The Wild"
Amasa and young Alec living off the land. I like Amasa a lot. He was a good father, and he was caring for and raising Alec under difficult circumstances. He might have dropped the ball on some things later on, but he loved his son and showed it. The flashbacks to how he met Ireya were nice too.

"By the River"
I really enjoyed seeing how Micum and Seregil first met. I'm not at all surprised there was so much mistrust on Seregil's part at first, or caution on Micum's, but you know these two were bosom buddies by the end of the day.

"The Bond"
This is the only one I even marginally remembered, lol. This is set right after Stalking Darkness, so while it starts off a bit emotional and sad, it paves the way for the next step in Seregil and Alec's relationship, which lightens - and steams - up things quite a bit. 😊

The Summer Players (working title)
This is a sneak peek at the next novel, Casket of Souls, so I didn't read this, as I've already reread that one recently. This is at 88%, so this short story collection effectively ends at that point as far as new material goes.

There are lots of illustrations throughout going all the way to copyright pages, and they were all pretty good. I especially liked the ones of young Alec, and of Alec and Seregil in their animal forms. I had thought there were one or two more short stories, but this was shorter than I thought it was. Still, I loved the stories we did get and how they built on what we already knew about the characters and their relationships with each other. (Phoria always sucked.)

Published between book 5 and 6 of the main series, although apart from the preview of book 6 the rest of the stories can be read after the end of book 3 (at least as far as I can recall), this short (too short, I want more!!) collection was a very satisfying read. I particularly liked The Bond—showing the time of —but it was all good, seeing young Seregil moving his first steps at court, meeting Nysander and Micum for the first time, Alec’s parents’ meeting and the glimpse of Alec’s childhood. Really, my only complaint is that I wish there were more stories like these. And maybe a second round of editing to avoid those few missing or repeated words, but it only irked me because they were little stains on otherwise great pieces of writing.

3.5 stars. This collection of short - mostly erotic - stories fills some blanks in the "Nightrunner" books. But it's not as good. I don't know, I found some of the stories lacking a bit.

"Misfit" tells the story of Seregil's first sexual relationship in Rhíminee and how Seregil became Nysander's pupil. I felt so, so sorry for Seregil in this one. Great story but rather painful to read in places, especially when you know how his apprenticeship ends. 4 stars.

"The Wild" tells the reader about how Alec's parents met. I found it a bit boring. I would like to know why Alec's mother's people wanted to kill him, that's true, but the love story of Amasa and Ireya never interested me much. 2 stars.

"By the River" tells us how Seregil and Micum met. Cute little story. 3 stars.

"The Bond" depicts Alec and Seregil's first night together. Unfortunately, a good half of the story is a word-for-word copy of what happened in "Stalking Darkness". 3 stars.

"The Summer Players" is an excerpt from the upcoming "Nightrunner" book that should come out in 2011. I definitely wanted to read more! 5 stars.

All in all, I expected more but liked it nonetheless. Though I don't think the anthology would have much to say to somebody who hasn't read the "Nightrunner" books first.

Eher 2,5 Sterne.

What could be more thrilling than to be able to read about your favorite characters while your are waiting for the book that features them to be released? Nothing, I guess.

This collection of short stories is a great companion to the original Nightrunner series. It throws some light upon different periods of Seregil's and Alec's lives when they were apart and had no idea about each other's existence as well as upon some moments of their lives when they were already together.

The only thing that disturbed me a little were the sex scenes. Don't get me wrong, I love it when authors weave such things in their plots and when they do it skilfully, but in this case it didn't look befitting. This might be because I love this series for what it is - a great romance without too many details on the sex life (well, without ANY details on the sex life). And this fact compliments on Lynn Flewelling's talent, because she is able to fully engage her reader without giving too much away, and it's really fantastic! And with the introduction of those scenes into the stories, the stories themselves became a bit too smutty to my taste, and the characters lost something of their initial mysteriousness.
I understand, that many fans wanted those details of our favorite characters' private life to be reveled, but it looks like I'm not one of those fans.

Still I really enjoyed the stories and I'm impatiently waiting for the next Nightrunner book, because the first glimpse of it was totally awesome! Though the name of the next book was changed I really hope that the excerpt presented in this collection will remain in it unchanged.

(Note! This review was written before Casket of Souls was published, so certain things are a bit out of date in this review.)

Glimpses is a short story collection, which die-hard Nightrunner fans will be thrilled to read, because it's full of interesting details about the characters (I'm one of these die-hard fans, because I've liked Lynn Flewelling's books since reading Luck in the Shadows a few years ago). Glimpses is also a good collection for new fans, because it contains stories, which reveal several interesting things about the characters and their lives.

If somebody hasn't read any Nightrunner books yet, here's some information about them:

The Nightrunner series currently consists of five books:
- Luck in the Shadows (1996)
- Stalking Darkness (1997)
- Traitor's Moon (1999)
- Shadows Return (2008)
- The White Road (2010)

There will be at last two more books. The forthcoming sixth book is currently called The Summer Players (2011), but it's a working title, so the title may change before publication.

The main characters are Seregil and Alec. Seregil is a master thief and spy, who's known as the "Rhíminee Cat". Alec is a young man, who becomes friends with Seregil, when Seregil rescues him. They work secretly for Skala and do nightrunning (they steal certain items etc). Their glorious adventures take them to different places and difficult situations.

Nightrunner books are entertaining, macabre and beautifully written fantasy books for adult readers. These books have become famous for the gradually developing homosexual relationship between Seregil and Alec, but there's much more to these books than that.

There are several different kind of elements in these books: political intrigue, mysteries, war, magic, friendship and love. Although Lynn Flewelling's books contain dark happenings, there's also plenty of good and clever humour. These books are the best kind of fantasy entertainment for adult readers who appreciate fine prose, fantastic adventures, mysteries and macabre happenings – these books are fun to read.

Now I'll write more about Glimpses:

Glimpses contains the following stories (and an excerpt from the forthcoming sixth Nightrunner book):
- Misfit
- The Wild
- By the River
- The Bond

Misfit: Misfit is a story about how Seregil becomes Nysander's apprentice in Rhíminee. It also tells about Seregil's first Skalan sexual liaison (everybody who's read Shadows Return will be thrilled to read this story, because it tells more about Seregil's affair with a certain person). It was interesting to read about Seregil, Korathan and Phoria, when they were young.

The Wild: The Wild is a story about Alec's childhood (Alec is six years old), but it's also a story about how his parents met each other and what happened to their relationship. In this story Alec's father, Amasa, meets Alec's mother, Ireya, who's a Hâzadriëlfaie. The Wild is a beautiful, moving and brutal story.

By the River: By the River tells how Seregil and Micum Cavish meet. Their meeting is interesting, because Micum first thinks that Seregil is a girl, but soon finds out that he's an Aurënfaie. In this story Micum is younger than in the books.

The Bond: The Bond is a story about Seregil and Alec's first night as lovers. This short story takes place at the end of Stalking Darkness, when Seregil is an emotional wreck after the tragic death of the wizard Nysander. The Bond is an interesting and beautiful story about Seregil and Alec's bonding (talímenios bond) and their deepening relationship. It's an emotionally satisfying story.

It may be a surprise to readers that this collection contains erotic scenes. I knew that there would be erotic scenes in this collection, because Lynn Flewelling mentioned about it in her blog, but I never expected that she'd be this bold. The erotic scenes (there are homoerotic scenes in The Bond and Misfit, and there's one erotic scene in The Wild) are quite graphic, but in my opinion they aren't exactly hardcore erotica, because Lynn Flewelling writes about real sex. She uses nice graphic details, but the scenes are erotic, sensual and beautiful (and feelings are involved). She writes fluently and lovingly about sexual situations without preaching.

All these stories are fascinating and well written. It's a pleasure to read this kind of fantasy prose, because Lynn Flewelling never lets her fans down. She writes exquisitely about different and difficult things (I'm sure that all readers will agree with me on this when I say that she's one of the best fantasy writers ever). I'm sure that her addictive writing style and storytelling talents will charm all the readers.

I have to say that I like Lynn Flewelling's characters very much, because they're realistic, three-dimensional and memorable characters with their own feelings and traits. They're almost like real living and breathing people – that's why it's so easy to like them.

Foreword by Laura Anne Gilman was an interesting essay. I also enjoyed reading "A Few Words" by Lynn Flewelling, because she wrote about the stories and illustrations. The excerpt from the forthcoming book was also interesting and it made me want to read the book as soon as it's published.

The cover art by Anne Cain looks gorgeous and the black and white illustrations by professional and amateur artists are beautiful. I like the illustrations very much and I think that other Nightrunner fans will also like them.

Three Crow Press has done a good job with this short story collection. It's great that these excellent short stories have been gathered into one book, because it's nice to read about the moments, which have so far been only hinted at in the books.

If you're a fan of Lynn Flewelling's Nightrunner series, this collection belongs to your bookshelf. You won't regret buying it, because the stories are charming and fascinating. This collection can also be recommended to new Flewelling fans, who haven't read all the Nightrunner books yet. Highly recommended!

(Hint: If you haven't discovered the magic of Lynn Flewelling yet, now would be a good time to start reading her books.)

Most of these stories could have been part of the books from the very beginning. I can understand why some details in the stories where not, since they were more graphic and detailed.

This is 2.5 stars for the stories, which are nice hole fillers but rather uneventful. And strangely enough, me a lover of good erotica, didn't care for the graphic scenes here. Somehow the general tone of the series calls for a more subtle approach (at least imho).
My fav story is the two-timeline one about Alec and his father. This story also contains my fav illustration: the beautifully executed scene where his father shows little Alec how to use a bow.

The illustrations are 4 stars. I simply adore the fact, that Flewelling worked together with her fans here. Such a wonderful idea! I loved seeing all those different takes on our beloved characters. Kudos to all of the artists.

A cute collection of stories, although really I'm not sure why she felt the need to make a whole separate book instead of including them in the main series because none of them are very long and they could all easily fit into the narrative as flashbacks at some point. It also features a lot of fanart, which is cute but makes the whole thing seem a bit dated now. I didn't read the excerpt from book 6 because it seemed a bit pointless when I can just immediately move on to the actual published version now, although I guess it could have been very different from the final version.

Casket of Souls

♥ I love these characters so much!

Wonderful glimpses into the past of these characters. To see a young, sad, hurt and maybe a bit broken Seregil during his first months/years in Skala? To see how Alec's parents met and how Alec grew up? Their first night as lovers? ♥ ♥ ♥

And, as much as I love all of these stories - I adore "By the River". The story in which Seregil and Micum meet. This story hits so many buttons of mine. A hurt, depressed, broken Seregil on the end of his rope and Micum seeing him sitting against the tree and wanting to help him? Seregil being scared of Micum and hiding and Micum slowly but surely drawing him out and manages to get him to trust at least a little bit? Hook. Line. Sinker. ♥

I also like that a mystery (at least to me it was a mystery) got a bit cleared up. I wondered while "Traitors Moon" why Prince Korathan would be inclined to listen to Seregil. Well, now that I know that they've been lovers... :)

While I appreciate the author showing us some moments from the Nightrunner series that we didn't get to read about before, this collection was not nearly as well written or heartwarming as the novels. I really liked the story about Alec's childhood, and The Bond was quite sweet too, but the one about Korathan was just trashy and badly written. The last one is an excerpt from the sixth novel, which at the time would have been exciting for fans but was anticlimactic for me as I just finished that book. I also found the fan artwork really awkward tbh. All in all, this is a cute collection for people who are as obsessed with this series as I am, but it's not a must-read.

"- Talí
- You called me that by accident the first time, remember?
- Unthinking, perhaps, but no accident.
- You're my Talí, too."

It was not what I expected, and I understand what some people mention about the "sexy" scenes not really fitting in some stories (personally, I only enjoyed them in The Bond). However, I still enjoyed the stories and the extra information they contribute to the main story and relationships.

Wasn't good, Wasn't bad....but I did feel a bit let down after reading this amazing series. The short book is a collection of stories that take place before certain books in the series. I just didn't get the feel of the great characters that the series has. If I picked this up before reading any of the books in the series, I wouldn't even consider reading them. And that my friends would be such a shame.

I love the Nightrunner books, and the characters populating them include some of my all-time favourites. But this collection is very meh. I liked the one about Seregil and Micum's first meeting but the sex scenes all kinda read like Lynn should've left the fanfic to the fans.

This collection of short stories adds the missing spice in the Nightrunner universe!

Misfit is young Seregil's ill-fated attempt to find a role in the palace and how he came to be Nysander's apprentice. Seregil is a very different man back then, without his years of settling into Skala.

The Wild is our first glimpse of the Hazadrielfae - the story of how Alec's parents met. The sex scenes here were...not great but baby Alec's blind trust of his dad, who devoted his whole life to protect him made the story a sweet one.

By the River is the story of how Seregil and Micum met, which also has its own Goodreads page.

Finally, The Bond, Alec and Seregil's first night together! Their care, love and lust finally reaching port - Alec eager for everything and Seregil treating him as the marvel he is. The teasing from the Cavish household was the cherry on top!

First of all, the idea was amazing, I mean the author herself writing some fanfics with erotica content included… But the erotica part was not so good and the other parts could have been in the main story, why not. (I won’t pretend that if I’m to search for fancics, it wouldn’t be because I want to read some NSFW, mostly.)

The Bond is the most disturbing thing of all. We’re supposed to see the first time of two persons who’re deeply in love with each other ..finally and...
What I saw was just the first time of some dating teenagers who NEED to do it because it’s what's
to be done as everybody does it but not because they really want and desire it.
Come on, Alec is not a 16-year old girl who has never seen male’s private parts in her life (and who probably just wants to get rid of her virginity, which is, BTW, usually painful).
He’s a guy who’s already had two sexual intercourses with women (one of which was questionably consensual on his part, though) and who knows how a penis looks like, apparently, as he himself has one... And it is his beloved just in front of him...
And in the result it's "I don't want this, I don't want that"...and it's awkward, and no bonding happened.
No, just no.
And for the Seregil’s part… it looks like he did a mistake. (Which I think he really did.)

This was so enjoyable! I loved getting to learn how our characters got to where they are, as well as getting to see parts of the story that fell between novels. It definitely doesn't feel like throwaway content, or an afterthought. It expands the universe in a really lovely way and adds to our understanding of the series in a way that makes itself essential.

I guess it is indeed the last glimpse of Nightrunner for me :( I already read the rest of the books and, as far as I know, there are no plans to continue with the series. There were rumors of a movie, but they died off a while ago. So yes, as much as I mourn the fact, Glimpses is an appropriate title in more than one way.

The book is illustrated by fans, and I can't say I appreciate it. I'm not saying that the art is bad, not at all. But it came from 32 different people, and as a result, is all over the place. The perception of Nysander especially varies from artist to artist, I don't recognize him on any of the pictures.

The book contains five stories, but one (By the River) was published earlier on-line and one (The Summer Players) became a part of a later book, so only three were new to me. Of those three, the first two were only ok. Misfit tells the story of Seregil's early adventures in Skala. I think it was supposed to be erotic and exciting, but really fell short of my expectations. The Wild is about Alec's childhood and parents. Amasa is better fleshed out here, but still not all that alive.

The Bond is more or less what I wanted from a book like that, those glimpses of erotic moments that are left out from the main books. Turned out those moments are not the author's forte. Just a glimpse without a taste. All in all the book just returned me to the miserable state of a withdrawal syndrome right when I finally got over it.

I enjoyed this book for precisely what it was. A collection of stories that fill in a few gaps in the history of characters we've already come to know and love. I enjoyed seeing Seregil as a youth, unsure and lacking the confidence and skills he so often has on display now. While his pain has always been acknowledged and affects a lot of what has happened to him in the later stories, seeing him "fresh of the boat" and struggling to adapt to his new circumstances in life had that pain much more viscerally understood.

I loved seeing his and Alec's first time together! Cause we all know they're perfect.

Plus meeting Micum, awesome and wonderful. Totally not how I would have expected it to go down, but yet so perfectly right. It really truncates the timeline and makes you realize that Seregil has not always been the confident leader he appears now. He's really only stepped into his own shoes recently. (Well recently for a fae. :))

Also knowing Alec's backstory will be nice going into the next book in the series I think. He did not have an easy entry into this world and the past looks like it's about to show back up.

Wow, it's been a while since I read the night runner series, but I really was intrigued by this short story collection. I don't read anthologies or collections very often, but this was simply amazing. The explicit scenes the author tried for the first time were sensual and hot and very personal. I think they really added to the short stories and gave them a level of intimacy that we haven't had in the main story where those most private moments between the characters were not meant to be invaded by the reader. Beyond that, these stories simply take up very important parts of the series that have been mentioned but never explored and give great insights into the characters and frankly give much richer stories than I would have guessed, though I wondered about the details even while reading the main series. There are a lot of free stories chronicling what happened in between books of fan favorite m/m stories, but each of these short stories is longer than most of them. They are a must read for fans of the series. Amazing!
