Not everyone's cup of tea but a fascinating look into, as the title implies, everything historical, mechanical, tactical, procedures and capabilities of nuclear ( and pre-nuclear like the first attempts at a submerged weapon of war ) submarines. And those who serve aboard them. Released in 2003 this edition is dated but not that dated to understand the dangers and fascinating engineering that goes into one of these beasts. And understand when it goes wrong, how and how badly it can go wrong ( with specific accidents reviewed in the book ) and when it goes right, how well they work. The book is put together nicely with funny and interesting comments/notes sprinkled through out as is typical of this format.

Okay, I bought this book more as a conversation piece in my submarine-related office where I used to work. I have lent it to a few employees who did not know anything about submarines and they enjoyed it. It does a very good job of explaining to the layperson what submarine life is REALLY like (so much as it can be discussed).

A bit of an easier read than a ship's training aid booklet, but without all the neat system schematics!
